So, I watched a couple of youtube video's yesterday about building your own coils. The most interesting thing about it was at the end when these cloud chasers started to draw on their machines! I've been a smoker for over 40 years and had never seen anything like it. I had assumed that you vape by drawing on your e-cig like you would a cigarette. Not according to these guys who just sucked in the vapour like it was fresh air on ration. They then went on to describe the 'throat hit' that their newly built coils provided. My first thought was 'I'll never be able to do that without choking to death' and my second was 'I wonder what's for tea?' Anyway, I was thinking about it this morning and decided to give it a go. I have two Totally Wicked Curve (similar to e-leaf istick) with one fitted with the supplied BDC Mini Clear and the other with an Aspire Mini Nautilus with airflow control. I tried it first with the Nautilus with the air holes uncovered as otherwise I didn't think the resistance provided when closed would enable the right effect. I took a three second blast, copying what I'd seen in the video and rather than the expected choking, the first thing I noticed was it hitting (I think that's a harsh word for what it really felt like) the back of my throat, not unpleasant in the least and then the flavour. Wow.... It really was the most satisfying vape I've had to date. I don't think of myself as a cloud chaser in any way, shape or form; I'm happy enough feeling like I've had a good dose of nicotine to stop the cravings. However, I was pleasantly impressed by the amount of vapour expelled... voluminous would be a good way of describing it.

Well, after several months of having my e-cig's almost taped to my mouth and going through at least 10ml (probably more) of juice a day, and never being 'really' satisfied I discovered that smoking an e-cig is NOT the same as smoking an analog cigarette. I wish somebody had told me earlier but then again, all the vapers I know used their machines like I did. Now, I'm getting something near a head rush after a few draws, am enjoying the flavour more too and feel that I can leave it alone for a while, just as I would have a cigarette. Seriously, for those who already knew how to vape properly, this must sound really stupid but I'm 100% positive there are loads of people out there that are missing out on the 'Joy of vaping' :p

Anyone with similar experiences in here?

Different strokes for different folks. I have been vaping for thee and a half years. Most of the equipment that is available now wasn't even made when I started. I have tried sub-ohming, and did not like it. Name- calling aside, each has to find their own comfort zone.
My Opinion - the Correct Way to Vape is without cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products.

It all depends on the gear a person is using.

Let me tell you about two RTAs.

Billow V2 Nano and Goblin Mini.

Billow is a cloud chaser.
GMini is a flavor chaser.

I had been using the Gmini for almost a year can get a good flavorful vape at 15 watts.

I built a coil the same as in my GMini and installed in the Billow. I started at 15 watts then 20 then up from there after I got to 40 watts, I was getting amazing vapor bug could not get any flavor out of it whatsoever.

Then lets take a little cheap Kayfun Lite Plus. Some people vape this as low as 7-10 watts. I used mine at 12.5 watts. The Kayfun Nano had flavor almost as good as the GMini but VERY limited airflow doing a lung hit is impossible! With the Kayfun Lite Nano you get very rich satisfying vapor but it MUST be vaped like drawing on a cigarette

Sounds like you are ready for lung hits and sub ohming. But that doesn't mean that all VAPERS have to vape that way. It all depends on two things.

1. Their gear.
2. The style of airflow they like.

A while back a friend asked my advice I recommended the Sub tank.

She couldn't stand the big airflow and went back to her old GSH2 tank and Mouth to lung vaping like s cigarette.

Hello DougO,

Mike here from England,

I think about this same thing everyday. I do think/assume though that people in general know what they are doing. It's hard to say because each to their own and all that. No point bringing it up to someone i may pass on the street who is vaping because i'm afraid i'll be accused of patronizing them. I wonder though how many people have tried vaping and then gave up because they fell short in the way you describe. A reason why i come to the new members forum here. Maybe i could help someone every now and again.

Most of the day i use an IPV4 box mod with a Zephyrus RTA. The RTA build is 4 coils with a combined ohm'age of 0.18. I get reasonably large clouds with this direct lung setup.

Intermittently i use a Provari with a Kayfun V4 (authentic). The Kayfun is an RTA in which coils have to be built. I get a great throat hit with this setup. It's for tooting, mouth to lung, so it doesn't produce large clouds it produces about as much as i would expect from a cigarette.
It isn't neccessarily a sub ohm vapourizer and my builds are usually around 1.8 ohm.

My Provari with the Russian 91% RTA

Is that what I'm doing... sub-ohming? I really need to get a grip of the vaper's vocabulary :confused:

I have a feeling among some people that's what it means in their lingo;
technically sub ohm just means less than one ohm; nothing more.

What you are doing is lung hitting.

There are basically 2 ways to smoke or vape;
1: mouth to lung
2: direct to lung

on small setups you have to do mouth to lung;

one big difference between the two is what happens when you get a dry or burnt hit

Hey Doug, glad to hear your finding a new way to enjoy this vaping experience. I've been vaping for only 10 months after being a heavy smoker for over 50 years and still enthused with this new lifestyle. Over this brief time I've accumulated about 7 different rigs, smoke I use in public and some of my sub ohm units for times when I'm by myself.
My family is very supportive of my vaping and my sons let me vape in their homes and around my 5 grandchildren. I'm not going to jeopardize this new freedom by 'cloud chasing' around them.
I was part of a revolution in the 60's that failed miserably and I believe it was mainly because of the image we portrayed and I fear vaping going down the same path. I hope I'm wrong.
Vaping has revitalized this old hippie with a NEW CAUSE!!

That's the thing about vaporizers, they can vary widely. You can get a vaporizer that is the same size/feel and draw of a regular cigarette, that's what many people tend to start with. But because of the differences between burning tobacco and "boiling" ejuice, the nicotine intake on vaping is much different, and less than a traditional cigarette. Cigarettes create tar, which sticks to lungs... Nicotine is released over a longer period of time, and they add chemicals to enhance and increase the effect of nicotine. Vaping doesn't have all those chemical additives, and it doesn't have the carcinogenic tar that the cigarettes have.. so, people need more vapor to keep the nicotine content up to what a cigarette has. So, if you use those "cigalikes", you'll find that small battery doesn't last for a long time, and the nicotine delivery is well below what a traditional cigarette has.

That's why there's more powerfull devices. larger devices require more power, bigger batteries, and create more heat.. and thus.. more airflow to get the vapor out. It's a bigger visual experience, and the flavor is much better. I'd say there are two main categories of vapers.... "tootie puffers" which use coils above 1 ohm, and the "sub ohm" crowd, which uses coils around .5 or lower ohms. I fall in the "in between" category... I like a .7 or .8 coil with a medium airflow. I have devices that go sub-ohm, and I have a true tootie puffer setup, but I always reach for the .8 ohm coils. I rebuild because there really aren't any single coil .8 ohm stock coils available, and I'm a tinkerer. Is vaping like smoking... absolutely not. I think the setup you started with is definitely one of my recommendations for a new vaper. a 30-50 watt device with a Nautilus should be the entry for a smoker wishing to get into ecigs. Cigalikes are too small. Ego's are ok, but chances are, they'll want more.

Glad to have you aboard.... congrats on quitting smoking!
