That's the thing about vaporizers, they can vary widely. You can get a vaporizer that is the same size/feel and draw of a regular cigarette, that's what many people tend to start with. But because of the differences between burning tobacco and "boiling" ejuice, the nicotine intake on vaping is much different, and less than a traditional cigarette. Cigarettes create tar, which sticks to lungs... Nicotine is released over a longer period of time, and they add chemicals to enhance and increase the effect of nicotine. Vaping doesn't have all those chemical additives, and it doesn't have the carcinogenic tar that the cigarettes have.. so, people need more vapor to keep the nicotine content up to what a cigarette has. So, if you use those "cigalikes", you'll find that small battery doesn't last for a long time, and the nicotine delivery is well below what a traditional cigarette has.
That's why there's more powerfull devices. larger devices require more power, bigger batteries, and create more heat.. and thus.. more airflow to get the vapor out. It's a bigger visual experience, and the flavor is much better. I'd say there are two main categories of vapers.... "tootie puffers" which use coils above 1 ohm, and the "sub ohm" crowd, which uses coils around .5 or lower ohms. I fall in the "in between" category... I like a .7 or .8 coil with a medium airflow. I have devices that go sub-ohm, and I have a true tootie puffer setup, but I always reach for the .8 ohm coils. I rebuild because there really aren't any single coil .8 ohm stock coils available, and I'm a tinkerer. Is vaping like smoking... absolutely not. I think the setup you started with is definitely one of my recommendations for a new vaper. a 30-50 watt device with a Nautilus should be the entry for a smoker wishing to get into ecigs. Cigalikes are too small. Ego's are ok, but chances are, they'll want more.
Glad to have you aboard.... congrats on quitting smoking!
I cannot imagine how confusing and overwhelming it must be to start vaping now. Welcome to vaping and welcome to ECF. I hope you find the guidance that you need here.
In the beginning the inevitable comparisons will be drawn. Eventually, you'll find yourself letting go of those comparisons and you'll stop thinking of vaping as a way to avoid analogs and you'll start taking it on its own terms. Give yourself time to go through the changes. It will happen, but on a time scale unique to you.
There's nothing wrong with using MTL (mouth to lung--like a cigarette where you draw it into your mouth first and then inhale) hits when you're starting. I know people say you can't do that with mods and whatnot, but I can and sometimes I do when I'm fighting a cold or I have a sore throat. Direct lung hits work best and provide me with a deeper sense of satisfaction, but that's me and it may or may not hold true for you. When I was transitioning to e-cigs, my gear was meant for MTL hits. I don't think I could have done a direct lung hit without coughing at that time. I'm confident I couldn't handle the gear I have now.
Sub-ohm vaping is using a coil (or a build) that's below 1.0 Ohms. This is all the rave now, but it's not for everyone. I prefer a longer draw so I tend to build a bit higher. Give yourself permission to explore and make mistakes. It's OK. It will take time for you to find the right gear for your needs. If you find that you like 1.2Ohm coils, you're not any less of a vaper than someone who is rocking 0.15Ohms. Gotta go with what works for you and it can take come trial and error to get there.
One caveat to that "it's OK to make mistakes" thing. All those warnings about battery safety and using proper chargers and not keeping batteries in your pocket with your keys and all that is-it-hyperbole-or-is-it-true, we mean that. You don't want to make those mistakes. It's not hyperbole. Please, ask questions if you're not sure if what you're doing is safe. We want you here and we want to help. We don't want you to be another headline. With your battery, please only use the official charger and do not leave it on charge after it is done charging.
Hope you enjoy your visits here as much as I enjoy mine.
My take on this topic is that everyone starts vaping like they smoked (throat hit and tight draw being the hallmarks) because that's the easiest way to make the transition, but then something happens - the vaper begins to experiment and may see vaping as a thing totally separate from smoking, a pleasure in and of itself. That's when the cloud volume and vape temperature start to matter. I remember when I first started taking full, warm lung hits from a new RDA, and realized how much more satisfying it was (for me). Pretty soon all my old 'mouth to lung' gear was given away or retired.
But the transition needs to happen organically, I think. Out of curiosity or whatnot, rather than peer pressure or advertising. It's just something that vapers come upon on their own. You can't just hand a wide open dual coil RDA to a newbie vaper and say 'This is a REAL vape' - that just won't work. I think it would be too overwhelming and weird.
Two things
A Kayfun can be a very satisfying tasty vape. In MTL.
2. The battery with coins of keys is not entirely hyperbole. 40 years ago I was driving with a 9V battery in my pocket. It made contact with a quarter and the battery got so hot it burned my leg and had to toss it out the window.

Exactly. Not hyperbole. As you unfortunately experienced, it's not just 18650 batteries either. Never want to complete the circuit in your pocket. Just like I won't use a bulging, rusted, leaking AA battery, I won't use a iffy looking 18650. Not worth the risk.
I've spoken to new vapers who dismiss these concerns. They regard the warnings as chavish. I wonder if we're getting into crying wolf with all of the warnings on so many things. But, that's a discussion for another thread.
I don't know the full specs but it's a cigarette type by JAC and has a recharge unit for when you're out which is very handy as the battery doesn't last that long. Now, I'm enjoying the mouth to lung hit most of the time and as you said, it's much more satisfying, for me.
I learned that lesson long before lithium ions...back in the late 90's I used to work for a videoconfrencing company. The Infra red devices required AA batteries, so we relied on a lot of AA batteries. It was a fairly small company, but produced enough to buy batteries by the packs of 500's. of course, they would just toss them in a bin, and would take them out when needed. Well, never the less... one day, I guess enough batteries made a closed circuit.. and yes, it caught fire... destroying over $10,000 worth of equipment that the batteries were beside. Needless to say, we kept them a bit more securely after that. Two things

Neal .8-1 ohm is my sweet spot for vaping as well. Yhstvsrrns to provide the best flavor.

Lol.. glad I'm not the only one. The best atomizer I've found for .8 ohm single coil so far, is the Taifun GT2. To me, the Kayfun has too much restrictive flow for a .8 build. The Squape-R would be a great one, but after about 3 versions of them and a year later, I've yet to find a build that kept up with the juice flow without constant priming, or didn't totally leak out the next day. What about you?
Not all in vain ... at least you have vaping! Chin up, Mate.I vape the way I vape. It's certainly not like P Busardo... I don't even know what to call that 'style'....
Then again, I was never a 'cool' smoker.
Then again, I was never 'cool'....
argh.... my life has been in vain....
