Last night some malware hidden in my chinese "windows" clone OS activated, hijacking my system, and among other problems, sent out some phishing e-mails from my yahoo.com address to everyone in my address book.

I apologize to anyone who received any e-mail from my yahoo.com e-mail address. Especially if you opened it thinking it was the promised vape-iversary sale e-mail blast!! It is NOT, and the official e-mail blast will not be coming from a yahoo account, but from our bloogplanet.com address. Do not open any mail from my leaford@yahoo account, or do not follow the link if you do. I don't know where the link goes, but it CAN'T be anything good.

For the record, official Bloog e-mails will always come from an @bloogplanet.com web address, and e-mails from me will always come from my leaford@e-smoker-forever.com address. Neither I nor Bloog use yahoo.com addresses for business or personal use.

Again, my aplogies to ANYONE who received an e-mail from leaford@yahoo, and you have received one, do not open it, discard it unread. And NEVER open any unknown attachements or follow any unknown links in any unsolicited e-mail you receive, EVEN if it is from a trusted source.

The vape-iversary e-mail blast WILL go out Tuesday, and it will be from an @bloogplanet.com address. I apologize for that delay.

[EDIT]Oh and for the record, I do NOT have access to the Bloog e-mail list, and the Bloog e-mail list was NOT affected by this. Only my personal contact list. Unfortunately, those of you who have communicated directly with me via e-mail are in my contacts.

Criminy. Remember you were asking about something goofy with your PC earlier? Folders looked weird or something. My yahoo 'junk' address has been hacked to send out ......, etc. mails, as has a friend of mine's yahoo. That happens a lot with them. Which is why I never use that for real email, just when I have to register one somewhere I never plan on using again. I get about 50 junk mails a day on that one now. Isn't there any legitimate place you can get a new/real OS from?

Heyyyy that's right! I got one of those from Chase saying the company they use for mailings was hacked. Just email addys, no personal/sensitive data.

I just received about 4 emails yesterday from business...US Bank...etc. advising they were hacked and zillions of email addresses were accessed. So you are not the only one that got whacked. Luckily only email addresses were available to these jerks.

I was just about to write you and ask if you had sent me an e-mail. I did get one from Leaford@yahoo.com with no subject. I opened the e-mail, but I did not click on the link. I was going to ask if it was really from you before doing that. I have now deleted the message. Do you think just opening the e-mail has put me at any risk? Again I did not click on the link in the message.

It is possible. Do you have any virus software? I would run a quit scan of the computer just to make sure.

Glad to hear it, Slim! And sorry again!! :(

No problem Leaford. I didn't click on the link because the whole thing looked suspicious. There was no subject, and no message, just a weird atypical-looking link. Plus it landed, appropriately, in my Spam folder, and I had never seen you write from that e-mail address before. So, that's why I was going to confirm with you first whether it was really from you before messing with it. So, thanks for the heads up.

Those emails that claim to be from banks rarely are. That is a classic phishing scam.
If you use web-based (yahoo/hotmail, etc) email - always look at the FULL HEADERS,
usually an option at the top/bottom of the email. Only there can you see the real
email address it was sent from and make sure the domain resolves.

Another big problem can be caused by some routers firmware allowing web pages to
change your routers DNS settings. Had this happen to me and when I figured it out
all my internet traffic was going through a Russian dns address. Easy to fix but
usually people freak out and think it's a virus.

I've had yahoo contacts harvested and spammed before - twice in 12 years,
but check your sent folder, chances are the emails were not sent from your account.

IT tip: If you want to know if the above happens to you before your contacts start
sending you "Did you send this?" emails, add an invalid email address to your contact
list. It will bounce back to you as undeliverable, and you can see who tried to send it.

Sorry you have computer woes - you're chances of getting a legal clean copy of any
program where you are is about the same of finding a real Chanel bag from a street
vendor. ; )
So many tricksy people trying to get The Precious.

Ms. Slim, I never trust norton anti-virus... I've fixed alot of people's comp that were infected to hell and back that norton said was ok..... I suggest avast (free anti virus program) and spybots search and destroy (also free) for spyware.... You'll be surprised what you might find hidden....

Thank you Morandir, that's what my husband always says too. He hates Norton. I also have Avast, so I'll run that and the spybots as well as you suggest.

Get a Mac. I love them and they are more secure :)

It is the easiest thing to say...
There is this 27" imac which just smiles at me every time I pass the apple store at the mall..
Don't know how long I can hold off (These things are pretty expensive)

@leaford: Till you get a mac you ensure you have some additional security on ur system Norton is crap. I would suggest the following
1) kaspersky (paid) Avast (free)
2) Spybot Search & Destroy (Anti spyware)

Once you have any of the above two you should be good to go till your trip to hongkong
