Journey of a vape newbie – day zero
( most of this has been said in other posts of mine… just putting it all in one place )

If you are bored with long posts… then skip this, what I intend here is to give a running commentary on my Journey away from Smoking and into vaping ( the term people seem to be using ) I will probably update this once a day for a while, and slow it down over time. But I like writing this kind of stuff and it helps my own commitment level to document how I am doing, I might as well do that here.

Today I am assuming is day zero, Woke up this morning, I still have a half a pack of cigarettes ( I am a pack a day smoker, my wife smokes less than a half a pack ) I smoke Marlboro Light Menthol, but I am a rather heavy dragger on the smoke while I smoke it. Checked the tracking on my packages and I am assuming they will both arrive today… the packages… well.. I will get to that later.

I started smoking at 16 ( I am 55 ) I have quit too many times to count, once for several years, but as we all know smoking is very easy to fall back into. I have tried them all, gum, lozenges, patches, pills and it starts off ok, then I cheat a little, then I cheat a lot, then people catch me cheating, then I am back to a pack a day in no time. Rinse and repeat over and over and over and over.

I don’t know anyone who Vapes, not around here anyway. My manager once showed me an advertisement for an E-cigarette and I laughed at the time, but it stayed in my mind. One day about 2 weeks ago I started doing a little bad research. By bad research I mean I read the websites of E-Cigarette companies… and the easiest to find ones ( you can imagine which ones ) they all of course said it was great, particularly their own products.

Then someone on the forums of one E-Cig company showed me a website called E-Cigarette lady, it was a series of videos on different products, and she liked one so much I figured that must be the product for me. I ordered a kit, and a bunch of cartridges. This was a very cigarette looking device with little batteries and a red led light at the tip

Later that same day… someone pointed me to the E-Cig forums ( here ) and I started reading, and reading, and reading, and occasionally posting, and replying and all of a sudden I was struck like a bolt of lightning…. I ordered the wrong thing ( for me anyway )

I wanted something that would be satisfying, that was large enough to last me all day at work ( I smoke about 1 cigarette an hour at work ) That I could take on a trip ( I have 2 daughters getting married this year, both long distance weddings ) That would produce enough vapor, and flavor, to be satisfying.

Fortunately the company I had ordered the product from was having inventory issues and so canceling the order was easy. They were all very nice people, I wish that company well… but I got convinced here that I should order something totally different. ( I wont mention which one as I will only talk about what I know, I never tried their product, for all I know, it is fantastic )

I ordered ( and the packages I expect in the mail today ) is a Ego-T kit from Clouds of Vapor and 5 - 10ml bottles of juice from Blue Mist vapor. I also picked up a bottle of Glycerin at Target the other day ( VG ) just to have in my “Vaping kit”. The tracking numbers on both packages look to arrive at my house today, tomorrow at the very latest.

I am still smoking of course, and awaiting the mailman, I work until 3pm but often go home for lunch ( I will check the mail again then as well ) Im in California on Pacific standard time.

I of course have a ton of questions, some of them stupid questions that I am afraid to even ask. Like if the system is Battery-Atomizer-Tank-Mouth then why aren’t you just sucking juice out of the tank? I assume the answer is that there is a tube from the mouthpiece inside the tank to the atomizer… but I suppose I will know the answer to that soon enough. I hear about people spinning the tank in the atomizer so I am not sure how that works yet… I will find out I suppose.

I have been reading everything I can get my hand on about the Ego-T and still have more questions than answers ( does any of the stuff I read about cleaning an Atty even apply to the Ego-T? … with the puncture devise and the wick inside it, can you even see the atomizer?

How long will a battery last with 3 good pulls on it an hour? ( I guess will find that out )

How long will a tank last ( again 3 good pulls an hour ) I will probably be doing a short no atty pull first to prime the atty before vaping.

But again… I will know all that soon enough.

Assuming I get all the stuff today… I will probably place an order for more juice once I see what direction I might like with Juice. I started with a sample pack of 5 flavors in 10ml bottles.

A tobacco flavor with menthol ( like I smoke now )

One called Smooth ( another tobacco flavor with menthol )

Coffee and cream ( just for fun )

Chocolate moose ( might have been a mistake, but I do love chocolate )

Rum and Cola ( how can that possibly miss… it is what I usually drink )

I got them all 80%PG and 20%VG and with an extra 5% of flavoring strength ( again on advice from here )

After selecting one of these I like for a larger bottle I will probably get a 30 or 50 ml bottle of it and a bottle of clear unaltered PG just to have in my kit for clearing things out.

I also need to pick up a syringe… I hear a blunted 18 gauge needle is about right. ( but will gladly take the recommendations of others ) I should do that today…. At lunch perhaps I will drop by the drug store and pick up a syringe.

I am a little nervous this morning, excited… I want to see how well this works, if I like it I will probably get a larger battery ( the 1000mah ) and another spare atty just in case.

As the tanks are reusable and it comes with 5 of them I should be good to go on those for a while.

The plan… I need to quit smoking, and I don’t want Vaping to become a more intrusive habit than my smoking already is. I don’t need a new hobby… I have hobbies, I am a gamer ( PC ) and an amateur astronomer, and I fly high power sport rockets ( not the little Estes things.. the big guys, that take FCC clearance and licensing to fly ) I don’t need another hobby.

I’m looking for something to help me quit, I am starting out with 24mg of Nic, and I hear that is 24mg per ml, but the absorption rate is uncertain. So… what I will do is wait until I have a strong nic craving and then go outside and take 3 pulls off the E-Cig, then satisfied or not.. go back to what I was doing.

I hope to replace a cigarette with 3 long slow pulls off the E-Cig… we will see.

Over time I want to go from 24mg to 18mg then to 16mg and very slowly down the scale to zero over a year or so time.

I suppose I don’t care if I every really stop Vaping, as long as I stop smoking, and reduce the nicotine level as that really isn’t good for me and my medical conditions either.

I will post again after I receive my packages… perhaps today will be the last day that I am a smoker.

No I couldn't read all of your post. Sorry! I can say good luck on your journey from analogs.

The eGo-T in my opinion is a very convenient system and has worked well for me in both taste and vaper. I spot read your post and noted that you were using a 80/20 pg/vg juice....this should work well in the tank atties. I have been using Backwoods Brew juices at 70/30 pg/vg and the tank has worked flawlessly for 2weeks without cleaning.

My vaperite juices at 50/50 pg/vg clog the atty up in 1-2 days on a ego battery that runs at 3.2 volts. Hoping that running the tank atty at 3.7 or higher on my Provari, when I get it, will help with this.

cheers,

In reference to quitting smoking, don't put too much pressure on yourself. I started vaping with the idea as an alternative to smoking,i.e., so I could get my nicotine fix without going outside and not smelling like an ashtray--along with the health benefits.
Vaping worked so well, and to my amazement, I quit smoking in 2 days and haven't looked back.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself....just get off the damn analogs and go from there!

One thing - it sort of seems like you have everything planned out before you even get your orders. Sometimes expecting too much gets you disappointed. Try to have an open mind to it all because you may find you want to change your thoughts of a 1000mah to a Mod or whatever. Just be open. It's not so much a hobby as an alternative. You might be doing more as far as cleaning and picking liquids but doing much less repairing burnt clothing, de smelling your car, etc.
Be surprised at the easy ability to cut down or quit totally. Be happy that you're saving yourself for your grandchildren!

Welcome Astronomer!!!!!
One thing you will find, a huge truth in vaping is taste is SOO subjective!!! You may read a ton of reviews on a a certain juice, touting the taste is spot on AMAZING,yet you experience something completely differnt... This is true also with devices and especially cartomizers. I am a noob also,so I have read all this advice I am giving you and still had to experience it the hard way. At one point I really felt like an absolute vaping failure.. nic juice dripping everywhere, everything tasted awful, and I mean AWFUL...
Tobaccos, I immeadiatly bought mainly tobaccos, I was a pack and a half at least a day smoker.. I wanted a cigerette, not some fruity drink..Tobaccos do not taste like a cigerette... They taste more like the tobacco leaf, which to me translated into chewing tobaccos smell.or a grassy taste and smell... You need to dry and burn tobacco to get the smoke experience,so dont invest to highly in them yet.. Alot of people LOVE them.. To me teh taste and smell of tobacco juices is a bit gross.. The best alternative I have found is the strong coffee vapes.. I love coffee though.
Dont be discouraged if you dont like the uice or the system you got, lets hope you do,but if you do not, just try something else. I was actually just going to post a thread suggesting possibly we start a mentor/sponser group for noobs.
Also use and watch the classified here, I have just been selling off my tobaccos I didnt like and some clearomizers I had high hopes for.. It really helps defray the costs of failures..and what one person hates 5 may love..so its a great system

Oh I will stay open minded.. I promise.

It help me to have some sort of a plan, and If I vape, as I used to smoke ( about once an hour, and go outside as I don’t want to make vaping any more convenient than smoking is, the inconvenience is what keeps me from smoking 2 packs a day ) etc.

If I need to vape more.. I will... but anything to get off the smokes, and it helps me to have at least some kind of plan.

If the 650 batteries work... then I wont need larger ones, but I am expecting long road trips to weddings and I am also expecting my wife to be bumming vapes off of me occasionally ( chuckle ) which was way I was thinking of having the larger batteries.

thanks for the input and advice and I promise I will try to keep as open a mind as possible at my age ( chuckle )

I tried a few pen style e-cigs, but it wasn't until I built my first 5V regulated box mod, that I was able to quit smoking analogs. Don't limit yourself to 3 good pulls an hour, you may not be able to quit this way. I was a pack a day smoker too. I started vaping 24mg liquid on the box mod and a 5V pass through. Vape as much as it takes to get off the analogs, IMO. Then gently wheen yourself off the nicotine. I'm pretty much down to 0 nic at this point and experienced 0 withdrawls. Good luck. If I were you(or could do it all over again) I'd go out and buy a Protege V3.1 or the Precise w/ the 16mm batts. These devices are all mechanical and should be very reliable. You can vape at 3.7 w/ LR attys of 6V. They are reasonably attactive too. Just my 2 cents. Dan

Just got my Ego - T

Alas no e-liquid yet, that should arrive tomorrow, but tonight I can charge up the batteries, use some VG ( I have that ) to clear the unit out a bit and get it ready for tomorrow. ( according to the package tracker )

A BIG thank you to Phreakers! ( and a few others ) blowing hard from the battery side of the unit expelled quite a bit of the fluid that was around the atomizer ( a lot more than I expected )

Came in a very nice box, I wondered why It was so inexpensive, I think this is the older style battery that does not have the "push the button 5 times" feature to turn it off, it does however have button protectors on both units ( 2 batteries, 2 atomizers and a total of 6 tanks )

Charging the batteries up, and cleaning out the atomizers now. It is a very nice unit, and not nearly as large and unwieldy as I was expecting…. Looks really nice… sharp in fact. I am going to keep that box as it is a nice carrying case for everything.

I suppose tomorrow will be day Zero as I will smoke in the morning until I have my e-liquid.

So far, very very good, thanks to members of E-Cig forums!

I read your whole post, which I enjoyed quite a bit, but this part concerned me a little.
I would strongly suggest taking at least 6 drags each time.

I promise I will take more ( hits? ) if I feel like I need to....

Well I guess I have just made sure that I wont be using it tonight, the amount of liquid I blew out into a paper towel surprised me, and after all I have read about the "vomit" taste when you first get the unit... I decided to avoid that as much as possible.

Blew out both attys, then cleaned them up ( as much as I could ) with pointed tips of a paper towel, and I ran rubbing alcohol through them from the tank side, and the with fresh paper towels blew them out again from the battery side expelling as much of the alcohol as I could, again cleaning them up ( as best I could ) with paper towells and setting them aside to dry.

I wont have the proper liquid till late tomorrow anyway, so I will let them dry overnight, and all day tomorrow, sniff test them tomorrow afternoon for alcohol, and then test them out with pure VG until the postman arrives.

So far I am very... VERY impressed with the units as far as how they look anyway.

Sounds like you did your research and made a good starting choice!
I agree with what has been stated by others! Don't put the pressure on yourself....let it just happen! You have done the prep work and that is good! If 3 hits does the trick great...if it takes 20 then do what you need!
I smoked 30 years at 50-60 cigs a day! Did not believe for 1 second that this would or could work! .... It worked! Smoked 7 cigs the 1st day...4 the 2nd day and the 3rd day smoked half of 1 as the morning ritual and thought this is stupid as this tastes like crap! That was it! Some struggle more with it and some never look back! I guess we were lucky!
We started with the crappy Mall kit and quickly moved to the joye 510 and after short battery life moved on to the riva/ego and am super happy with it! You have the upper hand in all this with starting with a good unit from the start!
What I found to be the hardest was just replacing the ritual habit! If you smoke inside put your smokes and lighter in your car! That way you don't just reach for them! We are creatures of habit!
You have an amazing support system available here at your finger tips and we are all more than happy to help!
Good Luck In Your New Lifestyle Choice! You Can Do It!

Thanks for the encouragement

One thing I am happy that I found was this video... although he didn’t blow them out like I did, the info on the ridges on the tanks lining up with the spaces on side of the atty cover ( with needle ) makes tremendous sense, something I would not have known.

Yea I watched that one when trying to find out more on the Tank system and he did very well on the review!
This guy here is cozzcon and I feel he gives a good review and information....I actually enjoy most of his videos as I think he is honest in his opinions! On his main site the videos are great except for the casaa testimonial...actually his testimonial was great but sound quality was bad when he too it outside in the wind!
Check him out when you have a sec YouTube - Ovale eGo-T First Impressions Review....

By the way I didn't purchase the T kit yet but am still reviewing the information!

Unfortunately I have absolutely nothing to compare it to, even when I do take my first Vape tomorrow.

The plan now that I have used alcohol to clean them, is I am going to fill a cart with pure VG, puff it ( not inhaling ) half gone, then put the cart on the other unit and do the same.

Then I will put in the real e-juice and see how it goes.

I did find out one thing tonight, holding the cart in potholder gloves you can get it pretty darn dry with a hairdryer.

Im still going to let them sit till tomorrow afternoon... just to be sure.

I so wish I was as detailed as you before I bought that first piece of junk before I got my eGo. It's not like it will make me broke but damn I don't know anyone who doesn't get mad at throwing away good money. Sir you sound like a very sensible man indeed, my hats off.
