So I've been vaping for like 2 years now. I've maybe smoked 2 analogs during that period, so my e-cig has been a huge success and still love it.

I started with the Joye 510 and I'm still using it today. Never had any intentions to switch or anything, but had a few questions. I don't frequent this board too often, but because of whole exploding battery all over the news, I've been doing my share of reading lately.

I've got two main mega batteries for my 510 that I consistently use. I rotate them on and off. When one is dead, the other is charging. I take them off the charger (wall charger with surge protector) almost immediately after they're charged. I never let them sit there.

So my questions...

These two mega batteries are about a year old. They're still lasting as long as the day I got them, but when do they need to be replaced? Should they be replaced every year even if they still work fine? Do they just die and then need to be replaced?

I also keep two of the regular 510 batteries in the car for emergencies when my megas die. Is this a bad idea or dangerous? They're in there in the cold and hot seasons here in NJ. They get used maybe once every couple weeks.

If the 510 batteries "seem" to be performing about the same as when new, you "probably" don't have a problem. If you really aren't leavng them on the charger, unattended, the little plastic cap over the LED will pop before it blows up in your face.
Congrats on quitting smoking, and not following the "Hype" to stacked battery High Voltage vaping.
But you have saved more than enough money to get "New" ones.

Summer in the car might not be a good idea for any consumer electronic.

Yeah... I'm thinking those batteries in my car are going in the garbage. Maybe even the same with these megas even though they're still working fine. Too spooked... don't want my face blowing up.

I prefer to buy authentic Joye products and not some knock off to save a few bucks. I've been buying from electronic, but I really don't know if their stuff is authentic... it never even crossed my mind until recently. Any good retailers you recommend?

Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

I was thinking about getting one of those USB passthroughs instead of using the batteries when home, but a lot of them look like they have a battery connected. Something like this...

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Up until 2 days ago, I was using the same atty for the past 6 months with no problems. (same battery aswell)

I've left a 510 battery on the cahrger for close to 24 hours before and had no problems.

Don't let this bizzare incident with the battery blowing up scare you.

Just my 2 cents.

then im sure your fully aware that the suspected mod that blew up was using 2 stacked CR123A batts same with 99% of other mods exploding ..

If you've been vaping for 2 years and havnt had any issues why would you suddenly think now just cause someone in FLA Blew there stuff up this would happen to you all of a sudden?

Yeah... that's just suspected though. No one's sure what kind of batteries he used.

And what about this guy who's been posted all over the place lately? This wasn't a mod.

No, that's from overcharging. He comes right out and tells you he smelled smoke for quite some time before it blew up.
Probably using the wrong sized charger on his batteries. But to leave a battery unattended is a big no no. To smell smoke and not investigate isn't very bright either. He probably could have prevented lots of damage if he's followed some simple safety practices.

this exploded batt thing kills me, people who have been vaping for years all of a sudden full of paranoia and doubt. there was a car accident outside my complex this morning, been driving 12 years without one. just cause some guy got his doesnt mean im not gonna drive my car any more. use your head when you charge your batteries. and when in doubt, toss them out.

Car accidents vs a battery exploding in your face isn't exactly the same thing.

With a car accident, you at least have some control over it. You can react and see it coming to some degree. Car accidents happen. With an exploding battery that knocks out someones teeth and tongue.. and until proven otherwise, that kind of just happened and no one knows the whole story why.

Now if you were to tell me someones 2010 Toyota Camry randomly exploded after starting it for no reason and with someone in it... that's a little more like this situation. I know I'd be a little more worried about starting my 2010 Camry every time I wanted to go for a ride.

At this point, no one's sure exactly what caused this battery to blow or if it was even a modded PV. It's all kind of just speculation based on internet news and statements.

the principle is the same, hybrid car batteries have exploded, laptop batteries cell phone batteries, but here i am on my laptop, and i use my cell phone every day. just cause something bad happened to someone doesnt mean it will happen to you. accidents happen. we weren't there so we dont know what happened, but regardless crap happens, im not gonna let it effect my life to a degree where i take my daily decisions for granted. been vaping for almost 2 years, and never questioned the way i handle my gear, and im not gonna start today.

this happened last november, but people still buy hybrids. it is what it is i guess.

Is it news to people that lithium ion batteries can do this? Cellphones, laptops, flashlight (yea our mods use the SAME batteries as high end flashlights) do this often enough. No one is trying to outlaw Cell phones or put their charging laptop in a bomb shelter.

Use common sense and the proper equipment and vaping is relatively safe. DO NOT USE UNPROTECTED LI-ION BATTERIES. I read that the first time I came to the forum.

Yeah... I'm still vaping away. I just want to make sure I do it the safest way possible.

when i first started vaping, i spent at least 30-50 hours doing nothing but reading, battery university, mod safety, equipment, ohms, amps, everything i could learn. like a lot of things in life, use your head, do your research, and when in doubt, toss it. i use that last one on the stuff i find in my fridge =(

edit: if you ever visit the candlepower forums, high end flashlights have a way higher failure rate than out mode when using these batteries.

Well, since autos kill more folks then any other form of accident I'd say there's very little control over that. (Gonna stop driving? You could still be killed by one.)

And vehicles have been known to explode too. There's been known problems with ignition switches catching cars on fire. Cars jumping out of park, into drive and killing others too. Even gas peddles getting stuck and killing more folks.

They only have recalls after many people die.

And this isn't 'new' technology but something that's been around a long time and they still have problems with them.

Goggle battery explodes and over 8 million hits come back.
These all can't be on this one incident.
Batteries explode in every type of device that uses them.

Anyone know if the 510 mega batteries are protected batteries? I keep seeing that term thrown around, but have no idea what it means. Does this apply to the 510's?

don't quote me on this, but i believe there is a protection pcb in there, i havent used a regular ecig batt in a while so im not sure
