Do you do this on both, the .25 and the .6?
Yes I did and both are performing really good. Just make sure you prime that new coil really good before firing up on it. A few good 'non fire' draws and you should be set, I never even have to 'no fire' draw during use anymore since doing this and prior I had to a lot.

Or you could use magically disappearing penguin tape..

Do you have it completely closed off?
I do now, almost. About 1/2 of what you see in the pic. Changed it as the dry hits kept on coming. My 0.25 ohm coil simply can not keep up any longer. I had to prime between every vape. I put the 0.6 ohm in and so far so good. That 0.25 coil was good for at least 15 mils. Something is happening to the cotton along the way. juice is 70/30 vg/pg. Could be the vg settles in the liquid and that's where the dropper gets it's feed from, I dunno. Right now, it's a tight dl vape or a mtl depending on my mood.

So I got my Grey Penguin SE in today, still waiting on the purple one. I see why they are lighter, the case is made of plastic rather than zinc like the originals, so I expect it will scratch easier. It is very light though, just 112g with a full tank of juice.

Here is what I did restrict the air flow, and so far it is working great on the 0.60 ohm coil with 50/50 juice. I pulled the silicone cradle out (watch out the little metal bar) and stuck cotton in half of the air channel. It will be easy to remove if I dont like it.

I am very pleasantly surprised by the vape. Quite good for an el-cheapo mod. Now it doesnt compare with my DNAs, but it is still quite acceptable for my normal MTL hit. I can easily see this as the mod I take to work, not worrying if it get banged up or whatever.

I will do temp testing on it this weekend.

Yeh and I think you are right when you said way back that some coils are better than others. Or seem to be. And that would relate to assembly of the coil, i'm sure it's not always a consistent cotton wrap, some tighter than others. Affecting the siphoning. By restricting the intake it HAS to pull more siphon to the coil on each draw. it's just a matter now of regulating it as best as can . I was thinking of making up some tiny silicone plugs to vary the inlet size. And try that. And the matter of how long a coil lasts. Still unknown, but even if they don't last as long as we would like , at least give us some dry hit free life span. I'd be happy with that
I ended up burning my latest "good" coil because I apparently didn't hit the fire button 5 times before throwing the Penguin in my bag. Again. UGH. It was such a good coil. :( But, the replacement is even better! I have tons of flavor again with this one. I just don't get it. I mean, I can sorta kinda understand the wrapping issue, which I still think can be resolved by Joyetech fairly easily, but how come some of the coils are super flavorful and some are just...good? Man oh man, though, I am really really enjoying the Penguin right now. I had watermelon juice in this tank and with this coil it is soooooo good. :)

Ahh, I see what did there! That's a great idea! I love the little grey Penguin. I am really hoping one of my orders ships soon so I can see the pink and blue ones, too! I actually wondered if the new ones might be plastic when Joyetech said they are lighter. I couldn't imagine them being lighter than they are now and still have a metal base. That's great for not having to deal with chipping paint (not that the paint on my white one is bad, by any means!) but I hope it's durable. I'm really liking the marbled look of yours! :)

Yay! Penguins on the move! :) I haven't received word yet about either of my orders, but it sounds like it should be any time now!

The SE. 23.99 and coils fkr 8.99. I had to try it. Now I just bought 2 more. Love 101 Vape.
Nice! I am going to check them out. I'm sure 1 regular and 1 SE won't be enough for me, lol! I will check them out for tanks, too. I want a handful of them for swapping out. :D

I vaped this Mod for 2 days, I am a strong MtL vapor and this actually satisfied me. It is not up there with a Clapton hit, but for a $25 pod mod it did well. I see it as a good starter mod for someone trying to quit, a good tootle puffer mod, or a cheap backup for someone if your heavy hitter bites the bullet.
  • This is a refillable "Pod Mod". Comes with 2 different "Atopack" coils,, a 0.25 ohm for DTL and 0.6 ohm for MtL.
  • It is a direct output mod, ie it is like a mech, no regulation.
  • There is no airflow adjustment and MtL is a little too airy, but it is easily modded to restrict airflow to 50%.
  • Common complaint on these atopack coils is dry hits. Priming the coil well when new, avoiding high VG and/or doing the 50% airflow mod reduces this to near zero.
  • Based on testing I would say it is plenty safe at .6ohms, while the 0.25 ohm is marginally hot.

Threaded probe through pod cartridge and inserted next to coil.

To make the 50% airflow reduction mod, you can just put a piece of tape over part of the airholes.

Or if you want something more elegant, plug the air channel from the bottom.

Remove the silicone plug, being careful not to lose ( and subsequently replace) the little metal plate.

Place a piece of cotton in half the air channel, it has a nice divider down the middle so 50% restriction is easy.

@mikepetro Nice work on the Penguin Mike :thumb:. Appreciate all that info . Nice work with the modified airflow also , great way to do it without having tape showing. I'm on day 11 with the .25 coil and it's still hitting nice , 0 zero dry hits since restricting it. I have noticed today that the flavor seems to be diminishing, but still vaping well. probably will change the coil because of that. But I am really pleased with the 11/12 days and if this stays the average I am all good with that. The other 2 tanks I have going now are also performing really good, so good that I've actually stopped counting days or amount of juice and just enjoying the vape.

Wow, Mike, thank you for this comprehensive testing! There is a very clear difference between the restricted and unrestricted coil temps. I love how easy it is to see it all laid out like you have done, and your assessment is perfect! :)

Hello, I'm new to vaping and I'm having problems with my Penguin... I got it a week ago and I've already blown like 5 coils... I chain vape alot and after a single day, it get dry hits. I don't understand why this happens... I use the .6 coils and my juice is 50% VG... It did it also with 30% VG juice. It's like after a day of vaping, the coil gets blocked and it's really hard for me to take a draw and boom, I get a dry hit...

I see people on here who's coils last for like 11 days, even a guy his wife's coil lasted nearly a month, and here I am having to change the coil everyday... I know it isn't the juice because it didn't do that to my Joyetech AIO...

I'm really lost and worried that I'm going to have to shell out another 40 bucks for an AIO if I can't figure this thing out... Thank you in advance!
