Hi. I started vaping just a week ago.

I've read a fair amount of info about Glycerine USP and I feel comfortable using it as alternative to the ones they sell in e-cig sites. I've tried one mixture with 70% water as a first experiment and it gave me the amount of vapor I needed.

My question is what is the shelf life of Glycerine USP especially after being opened? Does it rot like any other substance? Can it be mixed with any known harmless liquid like beverages, tonic drinks, ginseng, etc, without any harmful effects?

Whew, quite a lot of questions for a noob.

Hey welcome JQ. Here's a link to the DIY forum. The people are friendly and helpful. You'll need to get your post count to 5 then wait a few minutes to an hour and you can post in that forum. You can read there now but need to post here in the kiddie pool before other forum threads. You might like the Canada forum also. Good luck on your DIY adventure :)

Glycerine is supposed to have a long shelf life if it's kept sealed between uses and not stored in the heat etc. As for mixing with other liquids, do you mean for vaping? I would be very hesitant to mix it with anything other than known ingredients. You want to be sure the ingredients are water soluble at the very least, and as particle free as possible. Oil and particles will kill your attys and cartos at the very least, and may have some long term effects that we don't know about. There's some good links over in the diy sections that covers a lot of these topics. For example, lorann oils are not all oils, they're just called that lol. But, my point is, be sure and do your research. I just recently started diy and I use one stop but there's several good vendors.

i am now into making my own e-liquid flavors..all my ingredients came from the local bakery supplier(we can consume them as food additives should be ok in small quantity to vape..i see no harm using it) with only exception the high nicotine e-liquid i purchased online in 1/2 kg size(500ml)..i dilute according to my own recipe using the juice calculator like 70PG/30VG mixture 18mg nicotine and use experiment on the flavors from lychee to coffee and later on even durian..it is fun doing this as i have at least 4 flavors on the go..hope U get to do that with yr chosen beverages mixture but beware on oil base flavors..usually nuts & choco..too much water/oil mixture also might dampened yr atty life..good luck ..regards mafig

Thanks for the quick and amiable responses, guys.

Right now it's probably enough for me to know that Glycerine's shelf life lasts that long. (I can imagine the savings just buying a 100 ml bottle of the liquid worth about $4 bought from a local drug store. ;-) As for mixing it up with other liquids, I'll be experimenting with them probably much later. Water plus small crumbs of menthol crystals will be my next diy e-liquid. Can't wait for my crystals order to arrive in the mail.

The flavors I sampled from my starter kits which included menthol were mild. They didn't really "kick in" except the one with nicotine. (I'm really glad that menthol have been my preference as an ex-analog smoker. And even though I haven't tasted extra strength menthol I'm sure it would be close to simulating real smoking and would definitely "kick in", for me, anyway. Probably the only way I could appreciate other flavors that would "kick in" is by adding few drops of nicotine, as I mentioned earlier.)

My first taste of e-cig was non-menthol; I didn't know what flavor it was, but they were clearly trying to simulate tobacco taste. The small amount of nicotine that was added did help me appreciate the fake cigarette as a guy who's been trying to quit smoking for God knows how long. I don't have any plan of adding nicotine. I'm definitely just enjoying the simulation of smoke as a substitute for the deadly habit.

Yes, food grade vg can be had for ~ 30 per gallon. I'd personally rather buy in smaller quantities but that's just me. I'm a little surprised you managed to get vapor after diluting 70% but I've never tried it so I didn't know that. One thing you might try in the future is some pg. I actually like it better, but it doesn't have as much vapor. Most of my diy mixes are winding up around 50/50 at the moment. Speaking of nicotine, I 'think' (but not certain) around 6 to 8 mg is going to be below addiction levels for most people. There's some good threads on that but I don't have them bookmarked. Good luck and happy vaping.

I did see some percentages of mixtures in the first e-liq sites I've seen and I did the reverse just to see how effective glycerine is in producing vapors. I don't know the negative effect in terms of the atomizer's life when the liquid is too thin, so I'm really just experimenting and not following any rules at the moment. I'd go probably 50/50 eventually.

Another reason why I did 30% is this "for external use only" caution displayed on the Glycerine USP bottle.
