How long steeping time do you guys recommend for this mix?
Great choice! Scutch was one of my first mixes and still remains as something I return to almost 2 years later. I has also been a "base" that I have riffed on with different focus (nut focus, tobacco focus, caramel focus).

For the basic Scutch I personally find that it makes a very acceptable shake-and-vape, Though fresh; caramel and butterscotch dominate. It will benefit from a 24-72 hour rest and round out/blend into a better balanced vape. The caramel and butterscotch soften a bit and the nut moves forward into balance. The RY4 Double - TFA has very little "tobacco" to it but, if I can let this sit for 3-4 weeks, I can start to detect hints of tobacco ever so lightly in the background.

I should note that I am a strong proponent of doing regular tastings of any new juice recipe; from freshly mixed all the way through until it passes its peak. To me; it is the only way I will understand if, and how, a recipe is, or is not, going to change over time. And, also for me, notes are imperative during this process.

I know there are plenty of DIYers that simply throw every fresh mix into a drawer for three weeks and won't taste it until after. It works for them and that's fine. But, again to me, that is not understanding your juice. Does it need time? Are flavors changing: coming out, fading away? What flavors? These are all thing I want to know.

Great detailed answer IDJoel! Thanks!

Now after about 70 hours after mixing i tried it and as hou mentioned its clearly taste caramel and butterscotch. At the first taste something i think i would add to this mix (eventhough its an awesome recipe) would be some cinnamon. I think that really would lift it/suit my tastebuds. But i will wait a few weeks and see. Mabye the taste changes so much the cinnamon not longer will be suited....

But once again, it was really tasty and smooth even after just 2-3 days of steeping! . This is without a doubt by far the best DIY i have ever tasted. Hats off!

This just reminded me that I bought Pistashcio eons ago to make this recipe. I made the toasted almond version and liked it, but didn't have Pistashcio.
I need to re visit this recipe.
I played with the Pistashcio in other recipes and didn't really fall in love with any of them.
Thanks for reminding about this! I know it was a very well liked and popular recipe.

Your welcome! That's just the kind of help so many other terrific folks have given me here on ECF; so I try to pay it forward. :D

I'm not a "cinnamon" kind of guy but I could see how that might work.

The nut (which nut did you go with?), and maybe a touch of the tobacco (depending on how good your taste buds are;)), should come forward and find a balance with the caramel and butterscotch. It is just my opinion, but I don't find this particular recipe changes a whole lot, especially after the first week.

I have also found it an easy/fun one to tinker with. Just by changing the "nut" you get a noticably different taste. Both the pistachio and toasted almond that TC1 suggests are good. I found I was personally partial to hazelnut. I have a friend I mix for that requests 12 ounces at a time with pecan (all at the same 3%). I found the "sweet" to get a little over the top if I vaped it for any length of time so I cut back on the butterscotch and caramel candy... still was a nice vape. I played with bumping the cream notes... tasty. I even used it to start playing with a few tobaccos (along with cutting back on the butterscotch and caramel). TFA's Black Honey (tobacco) is still a favorite addition to this.

All my fiddlin' around and nothing was even remotely unvapable. Actually most of it was pretty tasty. So don't be afraid to play with it. Just do it with small changes and make it your own.

Perhaps, since you made 100 mL, you might give it a good shake and then pull off 5-10 mL and add a drop or two of cinnamon to the small sample and see what you think. I doubt it will take much so it shouldn't throw your percentages much.

This is without a doubt by far the best DIY i have ever tasted. Hats off!
ALL credit goes to @tc1!

It was the toasted almond. Yeah, a frew drops of cinnamon sounds really nice! Now about a week after mixing it still taste much of the butterscotch. Almost a little to much. But i hope it smooths out after a few more weeks..
After a week you might... get a little more balancing out of your current batch but I am guessing that, if it is still on the sweet side for you, it is going to remain there.

Like I said previously; don't be afraid to tweak the recipe a little; it is quite forgiving. I would experiment with smaller batches (say 10-15mL) and start making small(ish) adjustments. It helps if you know what you are wanting to achieve.

"Too sweet/too much caramel and/or butterscotch" is not the same as "I want to taste more... tobacco, cream, or vanilla (whatever it is you find lacking)."

Too sweet/too much caramel/butterscotch; you would address by reducing the Butterscotch, Caramel Candy, and or RY4 Double. All three of which contribute to both the sweetness and the caramel-butterscotch profile (perhaps taking the RY4 from 7% to 6%, and halve both the Butterscotch and
Caramel Candy... 3->1.5% and 2->1% respectively).

Mix, shake, and taste. How does this compare? Better? Not sweet enough? Still too Sweet? Make notes of your initial perception. Now let it rest (steep) for a week. Taste again. Look back to your notes from the first tasting. How has it changed? Better? Worse? Not much different? What would you like to be different. Make more notes.

Tweak some more as needed to get it where it is right for you. When you find "that" sweet magic; then start mixing in larger batches.

Also, when you are using several flavor concentrates that all have similar taste (RY4D, Butterscotch, and Caramel Candy are all "caramel-like"), it can be very helpful to make some small single-flavor testers (5mL?) so you have a better idea of what each is bringing to the overall mix. That way you might more easily identify what you may be finding too much or not enough.

When I started tweaking Scutch for me, I wanted less sweet and caramel and more tobacco presence, so I reduced the RY from 7% to 4% and added 3% Black Honey (Tobacco). This was better for me; but I wanted a more interesting tobacco profile, so I reduced the Black Honey from 3-1.5% and added 1.5% of Mild Black... and so on. You can see that I tried to stay within the same total percentage by taking a little of "this" out and adding a similar amount of "that" in. I wasn't interested in changing the overall profile; I just wanted to give more emphasis to one portion of the profile while reducing that which I found too prominent.

Yeah you are right, I'll should mixed it in a smaller amount to begin with. Its not that i dont like it, just that for an ADV its a little bit to caramelly...

Good suggestion with the Black Honey!

I will try different batches and se which will turn out the best.

Thank you for all the help so far!

I will post again with the follow up!

Cheers!

After work today i tried it again. And today it wasn't so "caramelly" as last time. The butterscotch and caramell has truly changed when i last tried it 2 days ago! And now it has only been steeping for 9 days. So my hopes are up for it to balance out.

But i have ordered Capellas Cinnamon danish swirl v1. I think it will really suit well with this flavors. I yet dont know how many procent i will try to pour in. I will try a few different bottles....

Summary:
The Cinnamon danish was an awesome addition to this recipe. Now i am truly satisfied with this juice!

The original recipe was VERY good for vaping with a strong cup of coffey. But for my taste the cremy butterscotch taste was just a little bit to much for me as an ADV.

Now after adding the CDS is so tasty so i choose this before most of my other premium juices, and i concider myself very picky when it comes to my juices. I have never before tasted any other DIY even close to this delicious bottle!

Now i am going to steep this for a looong time to see what happens with the tobacco note.

Thank you sooo much all of you members for all of your help and thank you TC1 for an awesome recipe!

Cheers!

Nice! Added note to my Scutch recipe as a recommended addition. Thank you!

If you don't get enough tobacco out of it I have had success with:
  • Adding TFA's Black Honey (Tobacco)(a "Captain Black" pipe tobacco style) or TFA's Mild Black (now called Cigarillo) at 3-4%
  • Halving the RY4D and doing the same
  • Eliminating the RY4D altogether and adding both.
Just depends on how much tobacco you are looking for. BTW: Both the Black Honey and Mild Black are very mild tobacco offerings. There are certainly bolder options if you prefer. As I have said; this is a wonderful recipe that plays nice with a wide range of tweaking.
and thank you TC1 for an awesome recipe!
Just an FYI (since ECF doesn't seem to have a good "how to use" tutorial): If you want to get another user's attention, or provide a link to a user's profile; start with the "at" symbol (@) and then their user name (no space). So, if I wanted to "tag" you I would type @Pluring . This will add an alert on their control bar that "they were mentioned in <insert thread name>." So If you want to be sure tc1 sees your thanks; give it a try. (Note: after you start with the @, and start typing a couple/few letters, you should see a little pop-up that lists all registered users that start with those letters. This is especially helpful to get correct capitalization, spelling, and punctuation, or only remember part of their name). :D
