I put this together today with one of the LM2596's I got in a lil while ago. It's pretty basic, RadioShack 4AA box, button and atty connector from madvapes. There wasn't enough room in the box for a meter so it's adjust to taste lol

Finished my pass through yesterday. Also my first experience with VV.......wow! I was amazed at the difference between 4.2v on the LM2596 vs 4.2 on a fresh charged bat. Eliminating the voltage sag of a bat makes a HUGE difference. I had to turn it down to 3.8v because my 1.5ohm DC carto was too hot to touch. I see a 10 piece order of new boards and a handful of HR cartos in my near future

Here is my lm2596 passthru, it can either plug in to a dummy 18650, which fits in my reo, or I rock a carto tank using this old flashlight I modded. The flashlight and the dummy 18650 just have a 2.1mm dc plug on there, and the passthru cord has a female 2.1mm on the end of it. Makes it easy to switch. It runs off a 15v laptop PSU. The box with the board in it sits on the floor and has a footswitch to turn it on and off. :D

This was a "use what you have available" mod. The box is a bit large for what's inside it, but it still feels good in the hand. Ill be searching DigiKey for a better fitting box for future use. I used all the DC jacks that I had for charging jacks on my 2AA boxes. The next one will just have a DC jack to be able to use a variety of input sources.

I use these: PJ-040DH CUI Inc | CP-040DH-ND | DigiKey

Good to 16vdc and they're small enough to fit nicely into just about any box you wanted. I almost used one in a 2AAA box but decided against it given the charge life of a 10440. Easier to change the battery than to have it on unusable while charging all the time. Here are my 14500 boxes with the charge port.

LM317 Low Ripple DC-DC Converter Buck Ultra Small Step Down Linear Power Supply | eBay
KGrHqNp0E9eEBcl5BPqs5dGlw60_3.jpg

Has anyone tried one of these? Not very efficient for batteries but could make a small VV PT off 12v in a 1AA box or small tube. The pot looks easy to remove and replace with a pot that has a easier knob.

I believe the LM317 has a 1.5amp limit. Someone here put together a mod using 2 LM317s in parallel. Check to see if there are any LM350 modules, this regulator has a 3 amp limit. Here's the 'poorvari' mod made with an LM350 regulator.
I made a VV PT in a Mad Vapes coffin box with an LM350. That's what I originally bought DC jacks and 12V 2A AC adapters for that I use for my ACDC.

ETA:
These are linear regulators, so they buck voltage by generating heat; going from 12V to ~4.5V with my coffin box PT makes a dandy little hand warmer. :D

Forgive me if i missed it but as far as extending or adding a knob to the v.adjust screw it appears to be brass. So why not just file down a piece of brass or copper to fit the slot in the adjustment screw and solder it.? If the knob/extension was pre-tinned with solder it could be done with minimal heat transfer to the pot knob.
