I hear ya.

There's a similar discussion going on in the General section of ECF. One poster made a great point. He said (and I'm paraphrasing slightly) if you're asked to put the e-cig away or leave, then oblige...but maybe carry a card for the manager explaining what e-cigs are, or take a minute to explain what they are, Perhaps the next e-cig user will have better luck. Worth a shot, right?

Of course Maxx has a valid point, and there's no getting through to some people. Still, passing on whatever knowledge you do have surely doesn't hurt.

That's what I ended up doing when I was smoking as well. If I wasn't welcome in a particular establishment, nether was my $. I don't pretend that I really make a difference to anyone's bottom line, but I sure won't use my money to support establishments that cave to narrow-mindedness.

Then again, I saved a bundle when Maryland banned smoking in bars and restaurants several years ago since I then started cooking at home much more often! ;) I'm a bit of a pessimist by nature and I can't quite shake the feeling that eventually the anti's will turn their attention on vaping and try to drive it out as well. In the meantime, though, I'm enjoying the "golden age." :toast:

Haha! You sound a lot like me most the time. Honestly I'd love to blow a big cloud of vapor in the faces of those ignorant people who just don't get it, and then I realize I'd be doing them a favor! Haha! Honestly, e-cigs in the USA is still relatively new. I never knew they existed till 8 months ago. Once people see more of them and understand that it's vapor not smoke, I think it will become more mainstream and acceptable. That's where we come in and get all our smoker friends on the bandwagon!

Generally when I'm out I don't ask if I can vape. Usually managers at bars don't take the time to try to get informed. They usually just make a snap judgment and that's it. I was in Galveston a month or two ago and happened in to a small bar to have a drink. I asked the bartender if I could vape and she said what is that? I handed her a card and she read it and said, " you can do that outside". I left and did not return. I vape all the time in Texas Roadhouse when having dinner. No one has ever said a word to me about it. When I do this I always leave a card on the table behind me when I leave. I have had waiters and waitresses look right at me vaping at the table and never say a word to me. I have also had other customers look at me as I vape and I make sure they see the blue led as I do it to insure they realize I am not using a cigarette.
I will never ask again up front as it only opens the door for them to say no.
If they want to tell me not to vape they are going to have to approach me and risk losing my business. This has never happened yet.
I am not blatant when I vape but I'm not really stealth vaping either.
So far this tactic has worked well for me

People will believe what they want to until their favorite TV News announcer convinces them otherwise. Knowledge is Golden. Too bad Walter Cronkite isn't around anymore...

Last night I conducted a casual field test. My non-smoker brother in-law was over and we were watching John Fogerty on Palladia. He already knew I had started using an E-cig. I asked him to tell me what he smelled. I picked up my Joye 510, puffed up a good lung full of USA Mix, and blew it in his direction from 4 feet away. He sniffed and said, "Nothing!" I did it again and he got closer to get the full effect. He still said there was no smell. He did say that maybe something was a little different but it was virtually no odor that he would have noticed if I hadn't asked and it wasn't noticeable at all. I was surprised to hear him say that.

Publicity will finally convince the public that we are doing something to get off tobacco and improve our health. The anti-freeze argument will fade as soon as the media explains that the same ingredient is in the IV drip they had in the hospital, the foods they eat, and lists the common sources of PG in their lives. Couple that with the fact that E-cigs are orders of magnitude healthier than tobacco and much, much safer than breathing the smoke from their grill or fireplace, and can't be purchased lawfully by kids, they will come around. The tobacco prudes will continue to say it looks like smoke so it must be.

Education is the key. The problem is that e-cigs have no lobbyists and no national association to get the word out.

A couple years ago when I tried to quit smoking, I had taken to cutting straws down to approx the size of a cigarette, and chewing on them to help relieve the physical habit of smoking. There was a time when I was in a restaurant and had just finished eating.. I cut a straw down and started chewing on it, while waiting for our ticket. Another customer a few tables away started coughing up a storm and complaining loudly about my "cigarette" smoke. The manager had to come over and tell me I couldn't chew on the straw because it bothered the other customers.

Since getting my ecig, I always check with the management at an establishment to see if they'll allow vaping before I even sit at a table. This way, if another customer starts to have a problem with it, the manager will already be informed of what it is and I won't run into any more problems.

I used to saute/grill cook for Olive Garden(Augusta Ga,)... worst 2 years of my employment career. Ive seen the most ridiculous things takes place in that restaurant... And as a general rule, you can count on the management of those establishments to be ......ed(mentally defunct), (nothing against the mentally handicapped for the similarity..)

That pretty much sums it up to be honest....
