Just a quick bit of advice for all of you Noobs out there with a 510. Learn from my mistakes! I am now on day 5. Make a B.F.D. (blue foam dart). For your carts. It’s cheap, easy and you can make a half dozen in 5 min.

I had trouble getting consistency (vapor, throat hits and taste). I couldn’t get more than a couple of good hits in a row, no matter what I tried, until the B.F.D. Once I started to use them I vaped my azz off. I had to walk away from it twice because of too much nic!

So save yourself the hassle and make a few before your 510 arrives so you can enjoy it. Then when you have time you can make your mistakes, but you will have something to fall back on.

I completely agree. I thought I was going to have to switch back to analogs at first. I kept getting that nasty burnt taste because polyfill fibers were getting stuck in the atty or sometimes just because the pollyfill was not wicking very well. It was drip drip, puff puff puff, drip drip. Now with the blue foam I can put in 10-13 drops and vape away. You can get pre washed pre cut blue foam at:
Blue Foam Cartridge Filler - $0.75 : StrictlyEjuice.com, Flavor Shop!
they offer free shipping over $10 and they have 510 car chargers for $3.55 and 5 packs of cartridges for 1.85. I don't think their liquid is that good but those are great prices on those accessories. HTH

I completely disagree with the OP and others that agree with his/her opinion. Anyone purchasing a new device should use it as directed for a few weeks to learn how it works and how to get the best performance from the device before trying to make phisical modifications. I hardly think that anyone vaping for only 5 days is experienced enough to recommend cartridge modifictions that, at best, do not significantly enhance the vaping experience.

I'm currently just direct dripping using the the hollowed out mouthpiece mod, which I love but am trying some cart mods. I just tried the Zero Filler Mod and it partially worked but I still like the first mod I did better. Someone does sell premade Zero Filler Mods which I'm considering buying but they're out of stock. I think my next cart mod I'm going to try is either this BFM or the Tea Bag mod.

I do think I'll end up just direct dripping using my current mod because I get great drags off it, great vapor production, and it's simple to drop a few drops of eliquid through the mouthpiece(cart).

I think the title is maybe misleading, I think the OP means, to the people who "Just got or are getting a 510 - READ THIS!" , considering the statement "I am now on day 5". I use the blue foam plug and love it, which is similar to BFD. I agree, if you don't drip, the foam is the way to go. I also agree it's not something you want to jump right into without using the PV as directed.

Well, I guess everyone doesn’t agree with me. LOL
I believe a large percentage won’t get to a couple of weeks experience without some help, which if I am not mistaken is what this forum is for. I have a habit of over explaining things (look at my first post) and was trying to keep my post short and simple. My mistake. I am not one of those members who just post to get my numbers up. I spent 40 to 50 hours reading this forum before I ever placed an order. A lot of noobs,(myself included) have had similar problems to mine. I am trying to give them a SIMPLE solution so that they can get to the “couple of weeks” experience.

Until last week I was a 2 pack a day, every day, smoker and have been for almost 30 years Except for 3 days a couple of years ago when I tried to quit. The first few days with my e-cig were incredibly frustrating! With a new cart (or one refilled), you can get two and sometimes 3 good hits (vapor, th, taste).after that it goes to .... unless you let it sit for a few min. (If you remember when you were a smoker, you lit and smoked a cig – you tried nit to just let it sit) The reason it goes to .... is because of the polyfil that is in a stock cart. In my opinion, it doesn’t wick fast enough. So you get a ....ty hit and the harder you try the worse it gets and it sucks! If you manage to get past that, the stock carts on the 510 don’t last very long. I know a lot of people on here drip or top off a lot, but for me it’s a giant pain and isn’t always possible. If that was as good as it got I would be outside right now smoking a cig, not writing this.

A lot of people on here recommend cart mods. to address issues like I had. I think I have read about most of them and only tried a few. Most take some trial and error, and some are down right complicated. The B.F.D. is simple (.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/58690-b-f-d-cart-mod.html). Take a look. (it even has pic’s) It just replaces the polyfil in the cart.
I know people who stick with e-cigs are going to try different things. I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t better ideas out there. But I know this is SIMPLE, CHEAP and WORKS! That, in my opinion, “significantly enhances the vaping experience”.
If anyone reading this thinks I am upset with the people on this post who have disagreed with me, that’s not the case. I think that’s what makes this great. I don’t think I had originally explained myself well enough. They may still disagree with me but that’s ok.
And like I said in my original post, this will give you something to fall back on as you experiment. Because god knows I will!

As a newbie to the sport/hobby/sensible alternative, I have to agree with Ta Taas. I'm just over three weeks cigarette free after 45 years of smoking rollies. Part of the appeal in the first instance was fiddling about with cart mods, adding VG for more vapour, studying every vid on YouTube and reading this forum, as I went through the learning curve of taking longer, calmer draws.

I'm sure I may have been tempted to have the occasional cig during the first week certainly, as the vapour production was fairly low; however, my total immersion in the whole experience kept me occupied enough not to until things improved.

Not trying to be argumentative, just giving an alternative view from personal experience.

Without this 'extra' interest,

Well I certainly agree that replacing the cart filler with the blue foam is a big improvement over the stock filler that comes in the carts, it is also very easy to do.

I just think people should take a day or two to familiarize themselves with the unit and how it works, when its dry, when its flooded, how and when to fill it, just how it works in general. sometimes with new carts you need to lift the filler a bit so it makes contact with the atty bridge so it can wick the liquid.

I agree that the blue foam is a great cart improvement aiding in wicking problems,
but I dont think its necessary to run out and buy it and make mods before even trying a unit out first. Also if its not made properly it could cause flooding and confuse people before they actually know what they are doing, just take a day or two to learn the device before modding it.

How difficult is it to put a piece of foam in a cart?

Pretty easy. Putting the right amount of foam in the cart takes a little practice, though. I agree with the OP--for the most part. I do think it's a little silly to make modifications before receiving your PV, but definitely be prepared to make some soon after getting it. Stock carts suck, period. Polyfill works all right as a plug (just about as well as blue foam), but as a full filler, it's a failed system.
So, newbies, buy some blue foam and some tea bags and some straws and get ready!
Seek the deliciousness.

even though blue foam darts are simple and work quite well (i use them myself) some ppl just might be intimidated by having to construct something themselves before they even know if they like the e0cig or not.

what i would say is give it at least a few hours of normal use, then if you are tired of waiting for it to wick or of topping off all the time then use the plastic toothpick method (found in the "wonderful world of vaping" thread) of filling the cart. it is easy to learn, does not involove altering ANYTHING not matter how minor, and has the best improvement to amount-of-effort ratio of anything else you can do (except for long, slow draws).

Well I'm the guy who started the BFD cart mod so let me add my 2 cents. I believe that perhaps 50% of those who buy a 510 give up and go back to analogs because of how poorly the stock cartridge works. That's a shame. I realized this short-coming quickly and new that I had to find something that worked better or I'd go back to analogs myself. I tried every cart mod on this forum. Some worked well some of the time. Some I just couldn't get to work at all. Eclypse's blue foam mods worked better than all the rest (for me) but I still had problems 50% of the time. When I started using the BFD I was amazed how well it worked. Then I started actually feeling guilty that I had not shared it. Problem was, my digital camera was dead and I knew that if I didn't post clear, easy to follow pics that I'd just be confusing people who would try to make one. So I went out and bought a new camera and took the time to post them along with what I believe are pretty clear instructions. Those who have actually tried it know how well it works.
My point is 510's don't work properly out of the box. Why should someone suffer using them for even one day when they can just fill up their carts and vape for 1-2 hours without frustration. Before you dismiss it, try it. I believe that those who have are happily vaping away using it.

And I have to completely disagree that it does not enhance the vaping experience.
I'm not even sure how someone could say that.

Didn't know that was your idea Pete. Good one! And really? 1-2hrs? Is that with heavy vaping? Moderate? Light?

Will my SB @ 6v work with them? I have everything right here in front of me to make them. I simply didn't bother once I discovered dripping. But, I have to admit, dripping while driving is NOT my favorite activity. And even an hr and it would be worth doing for the road.
