I know I`m a new vaper but reading up on the impressive reviews of the evod I thought I`d better get one.
Arrived this morning but did`nt have a chance to try it until this evening, so I filled up with my current juice (USA-Mix,70pg/30vg) and off I went.
Hmmmmm, very "airy" draw, not much vapour, not much flavour and hardly any throat hit and a strange chemical/plasticy taste which I let pass for the moment being as it was just out of the wrapping. So I let it settle down and went back to my cartomisers!
After a while I try again with no difference so I empty the juice out and strip it down.
I can`t see anything obviously wrong, no leaks, so I wash it all out in hot water and decide to test the resistance.
It seems like it was sent with the highest head they have (2.8Ohm) so maybe thats the problem?
I use a 900mah Ego type passthrough with 3 voltage settings, 3.2v,3.7v and 4.2v and it`s normally set on the middle at 3.7v so I up the voltage to 4.2v.
A slight improvement but no-where near as good as the Boge LR (2.0ohm) cartomisers I use so I figure the resistance is still too much so I strip the down to the atty :)

It all looks good, no burn marks on any of the insulating grommets and 6 coils around the wick so I pull a strand of the "flavour" wick out just in case it`s not getting juice.
No difference at all so I strip it again and pull the coil, it all looks good so I make my own coil .
I used 2.0mm Kanthal A1 and 3mm silica wick with 4/5 turns as almost everyone recomends and on testing get a higher than average (for this method) reading of 2.5ohms but still lower than the original baseline I took.
Dry burn a couple of times but nothing eccessive as there is no obvious burning off of residue, re-fill and fire it up again.

A very very minor improvement but thats it! Not a patch on the Boge LR carts running at 3.7v even when cranked to 4.2v so... i`ve left it for the evening and will have a think.

I can order in some new evod 1.8ohm heads and try that but all in all not impressed so far :glare:

Are my expectations too high? Are LR carts better than the raved about evod? Hmmmmm.......

Oh I`ll just add I`m even getting a better allround performance from the Standard resistance Kanger cartomisers (2.8-3.2ohm) on the same settings, battery and juice.

I`m leaving it for today and I`m back on the cartomisers for work. When I get back I`ll try using just 4 wraps (checking the resistance) as I`ve got enough wire and wick to do plenty of rebuilds at least before I pay out for a pack of heads.
I`ll also check the wire guage I bought with the micro-verniers as it MAY be that it`s not in spec at the stated 0.2mm (might as well rule that out before I give up on the evod :(

After a lot of messing around I`ve got it to work in a half decent fashion.
First my Kanthal wire was spot on at 0.2mm so that wasn`t an issue so I proceeded to make another coil, this time just 4 winds around 3mm silca wick, I did a lovely job and maybe the coils were a little small and tight as when tested I got 1.8ohms (I was aiming at 2.0  ) but no worries, fitted it to the clearo, tested resistance again just in case something had moved and fired it up.
Only it did`nt fire up! All that happened was three red blinks from my battery  and no vapour!

.... I thought it`s shorted and ruined the battery so I screwed in the Boge cart I was vaping and it worked lovely!?
Fitted the Evod (after testing resistance for a third time) and nothing! Just three red blinks :-(
Fitted the Boge...perfect!
So being a passthrough I plugged into the wall adapter via the USB and tried again, no difference or rather the same result so that ruled out a low battery.

So I removed the atty and made another coil with 5 winds...blah blah and it worked fine!
I`m puzzled to say the least

Have I got a bettery that refuses to fire anything below 2.0ohm?
It is an Ego clone not a genuine Joyetech 900mah pass through variable voltage (three settings 3.2.3.7,4.2v done by clicking the button 5 times and the led ring changes colour) and I have seen these online and sold by a lot of vendors. No where is any mention of not being able to fire anything with low resistance! and on that note .... I can`t find anything to suggest it has a safety cut-out with a warning of 3 red blinks!? It will give three blinks when the charge is low but they are in the same colour as the voltage you are using (Eg, I normally run at 3.7v which is purple (red/blue) and when it runs low it blinks three times in that colour) not blink red regardless of the voltage.

So the Kanger evod is working at a fraction over 2.0ohm and won`t fire on my battery at anything less than that which is a ....! as at that resistance is not an outstanding vape. It improves slightly when I run 4.2v but why should I? Everything else I run at 2.0ohms is bloody great and I like a longer battery life rather than running it fully cranked all the time.

I will try again this evening and make a coil of as close to 1.9ohm and another of 1.8ohm and test to see if there is a cut-off point! I also have a genuine Joyetech Ego-C 1000mah pass through and if any of the coils don`t fire on the clone I`ll try it on the genuine Ego.

Any thoughts on this are more than welcome :) and thanks for listening to my ravings :D

Lol!!!! :) just posted this and seen that I`m not allowed to say ....! ( think of shyte without the "e" on the end and an "i" in place of "y"! ) most amusing :)

Mine has a 1.8 ohm factory coil and works fine on an eGo 650 mah passthrough and 2 mini eGo batteries.
I've never checked the coil to see if it really is 1.8 ohm though.

I know if you tighten it too tight on the battery it will flatten the white rubber washer that separates the two ends of the coil and short the battery (3 blinks).

It is possible to get the EVOD to work fairly well but seems like more work than it should be. :)

Thanks for the replies and it`s nice to know that the 1.8 will fire up on Ego`s :)
Maybe it was my coil winding? I`ve got more time today so will wrap some coils accurately (as I can) and try again to see how low it can go (with-in reason, I see no need to go below ...say 1.5-1.6ohm......at the moment ;-) )

Yay! Finally happy :D

It took a while but I`ve got there, got the Evod working in a good fashion. Ok I hav`nt got much to compare it with, being new to the game but I was comparing it against my current best vaping experience which on the Ego batteries I have (of various mah ratings) happens to be the Boge LR (2.0ohm) cartomisers.
These for me are quite satifying and I will happily continue with them but they do have drawbacks.

They are a bit of a faff to fill correctly and I`m constantly topping them up with a few drops just to make sure I don`t run them dry.
They vape very well but do get hot! After a few long hits in succession the carto body gets warm, I`ve fitted drip tips and this takes the heat away from my lips but still a bit un-nerving.
The vape is a bit warm for my liking, I like a long slow cool draw.
Oh and they hiss and spit like an angry Tom Cat ! but at least it tells me they are working:blink:

So my quest was for something comparable without the drawbacks and thats why I was dissappionted with the Evod as it came to me.
To solve the problem it seems it was all in my head! Well the head supplied with the Evod which tested out at 2.8ohm.
I found my cure was to remove 1 strand from 3mm silica wick, find a very slim (0.5mm) needle to support the wick and wrap fairy tightly with 0.2mm Kanthal A with 5/4 turns. This gave a smaller coil dia than using a "fatter" support needle or paperclip and gave me 1.8ohm.
I double checked this with the same meter against the known resistance of the Boge and it was indeed 0.2ohm less than the Boge.
I topped off with 3 strands off the 3mm wick with the thought that if the flavour is lacking I can carefully pick out a strand, as it is it`s perfect for me.

It`s not miles ahead of my cartomisers but it is an improvement on both flavour and vapour (lacking a bit of throat but I don`t mind going up a few mg on the nic content as I only vape this at home and can use a lower nic in my mobile cartomisers).
The draw is a lot cooler and I don`t mind the "airyness" of it but the major advantage is the ease of use :)
I can wash and refill the tank to try different flavours without having to fill carts and potentially waste them if I don`t like the juice.
Plus I can see how much juice I`ve got!!

So all in all a bit of a trek but I got there in the end and now I have the set-up for the heads that suits me I can repeat this ad infinitum (or until I run out of the meters of wick and wire I bought! ).

Kanger Evod..... it`s all in your head! ;)

I have been enjoying the Kanger T3 for several months. I like the evod as well, but wish it held more juice.
The Protank is the cats ... in my book. I just love it

I prefer the smaller EVOD over the T3/MT3 because it holds less. 2 or 3 EVODs and I am good to go all day.
