I did it! I did it! I re-coiled a ProTank. The first time, the Provari told me "Lo" and I figured that must mean I had something wrong so I opened it up, re-situated the coil and voila. 2.2 ohms with 5 wraps. I'm awesome!

I'm pretty sure one of the coil pieces were touching the side or something and shorting it.

I did it! I did have to add a top wick for it to taste good. It's still not perfect, but at least I know I can do it. It took less than 15 minutes, total, even having to open it back up again.

I can't wait to show hubby!

Congrats!

What ohms did you end up getting? Cotton or silica?

2.2, cotton (butcher's string)

Congrats Candy!!! If you used the butchers twine, sure you figured out you need to remove many thread to get the right diameter. Your 15 minutes will go down to 2 or 3 with practice, and u may note a cleaner taste using cotton.

Hmmm. I used a full piece on the coil and 2 strands on top as flavor wicks. I will try to take it apart more on my next one :)

I don't think there's any type of 'standard' for butcher twine thickness, stuff I have may be much more thicker than yours. I normally pull at least half the threads out, otherwise it's way too thick to use. I do believe all butchers twine is 100% cotton with no sizing (like yarn), so u don't need to boil the sizing out. Ensure your twine doesn't have a poly or rayon core .... Light a end piece with a lighter, make sure it burns like cotton, and not ball up like a poly thread. I'd be very surprised if butchers twine had a poly core..... But better safe than sorry!

Good call... and gave me a reason to play with fire... heh, fire... heh, fire...

Burned normally, yeah, it's pretty thin. I did separate the 3 bigger strands so it would wick better. Seems to be working just fine :) At least I have blown anything up... yet.

Have you tried removing the silicone cup that sits on the air tube just above the flavor wicks? That's what I do and never get dry, burnt hits.

Interesting... When mine wouldn't screw together right with the silicone cup in there, I decided that maybe it was "protective packaging" that was supposed to be removed prior to assembly... I haven't had mine all that long; and, due to one of the wicks being DOA, I haven't gotten to use it as much as I'd like (the one that did work has to be cleaned daily, which is a hassle); but, it hasn't leaked on me without that silicone cup. When mine works, it works GREAT! Nice clean taste! For some reason, it doesn't seem to want to work on my pass through (on any voltage); but, it works fine on my 3.7v Natural. When I can get more wicks (or start rebuilding), I'm coming down from the 2.5 ohms that came with it, though.

... Always check resistance before using. Fried an ego battery with a shorted coil. Doh.

I'm sure that there are instructions on this somewhere here at ECF, which I could eventually translate into how to do it with a KangerPro atty; but, I'll just go ahead and ask: What's the best way to check the resistance w/an ohm meter, for those of us w/just low tech gear? (Here's hoping that this wasn't already asked and answered in the next 6 pages... If so, my apologies.)

Take one dvm lead to the center contact on the 510 of the kanger, other to the threads.

Forgot.... Check resistance after completely reassembled. If you check ohms on the head only, may be ok, but if one of the kamthal wires is not trimmed short enough and screwed into the base, good chance of a short.

Happens to me sometimes too and, like you, I don't want to use nr wire. So instead I bought some extra of those little rubber grommets .. you can get a 10-pack of them at kidneypuncher.

Great find Stash!!! Wondering if these will also work in my viva nova heads, I have a bunch of charred grommets. I usually wrap a 1.1-1.3 coil in both vivas and kangerpros to use with my mech, so those grommets are becoming an issue with hot coils.

Just ordered 250 feet of kanthal, should last me a month or two lol.

LOL
Bought a 100' spool 2 months ago off eBay, noticed earlier today while wrapping a head I can see the bottom of the spool. NO WAY I used that much kamthal in 2 months! Believe the seller is greatly exaggerating spool lengths.

hmmm .. wonder if we both bought from the same guy .. I just checked my spool and it's way low, like yours .. I've made about 40 coils with it and only use 4" for each coil.
