Kanger TopTank Coils

Hey ECF! I recently purchased a Kanger Subbox Mini starter kit that came with a TopTank. I absolutely LOVE this thing. It came with a coil already inside the tank that says is .15 ohms but reads 0.29 on the display. I don't know much about how any of that works but I do know I'm vaping at around 30.5 watts and it's the perfect spot for me. What is different about the other coils? What does a higher ohm mean? There seems to be a few different styles of coil. Which of them would be good for vaping at 35 watts and under like I am now?

I'm not sure, should be in the owner's manual, or you can check out mike vapes review he show's how to use it. OCC is the "old" square coils, SSOCC are round and have a stainless steel body. They perform the same just have a different shape basically.

The different resistances are user preference, I myself like the .5 kanthal coils. the 1.2 ohm has a smaller coil and thus a tighter draw. A pretty good vape for mtl.

He said that since I'm using Kanger pre made coils I don't have much to worry about. It monitors all that stuff automatically
You still need to make sure that you only use NI200 coil in temp control only. The mod will not do that for you.

Kangertech suggested operating range for their OCC coils. These are not "hard" numbers. You can vape "lower/higher" if you want.

Horizontal OCC Coils
0.5 Ω coils - 15 watts to 30 watts.
1.2 Ω coils - 12 watts to 25 watts.

Vertical OCC Coils
0.2Ω coils - x watts to 80 watts
0.5Ω coils - 15 watts to 60 watts
1.2Ω coils - 10 watts to 26 watts
1.5Ω coils - 10 watts to 26 watts

Both the older square heads and the new round SSOCC models will fit, and work, with any current Kanger Sub Tank. Choose the proper "mode".
  • Pink O-Ring -- Stainless Steel wire. Power or SS TC mode, your choice.
  • Blue O-Ring -- Nickel wire. Ni TC mode ONLY.
  • Black O-Ring -- "Clapton" coil. Probably Kanthal, Power Mode ONLY.
  • Red O-Ring -- NiChrome wire. Power Mode ONLY.

Okay that makes sense. I asked a friend who is really into this stuff and knows a lot about technology. He said that since I'm using Kanger pre made coils I don't have much to worry about. It monitors all that stuff automatically

No it doesn't. You have to manually select that option. In temp control you'll see temperature degrees, and wattage. I would just use the other coil it came with because ni200 will release toxins if it's overheated.

Your friend apparently isn't into this stuff as much as you think. He's wrong. You manually switch between wattage and TC mode. There's no "auto-detection" of any sort.

howdy - and welcome!

to echo above posts, to the best of my knowledge, that mod does NOT auto detect coil wire type or auto differentiate TC vs non-TC coils...

in regards to the SSOCC coils, if you are looking at em, make sure you look for the UPGRADED ones - the original SSOCC coils seemed to have some issues (burned out quickly) and Kanger pretty quickly released an upgraded version

So I googled the NI200 coils and that's definitely not what I'm using.
Thank you for all the information though! It has been very helpful
if the coil reads 0.15 ohms on the side, it could potentially be a NiCr coil - any idea what color o-ring is on the coil, or can you see if it says NC on the side (as opposed to Ni)?

I looked at the coil closely and I guess I am using a NI200 coil. Why can't you use wattage to measure with these? I've been doing it for two days and luckily nothing out of the ordinary has happened. What is a safe temperature to use with these?

This is so irritating and confusing. This is exactly why I went back to cigarettes last time.

It really isn't that hard, just look in the manual how to set in in TC mode. Don't give up now, just learn how to use it & it will become second nature in no time.

But if you rather use wattage mode there's nothing wrong with that. Just switch to one of the other coils that came with it. Either the RBA or the SS will be fine to use in wattage mode. Just start with a low wattage and work your way up until you find your sweet spot, everyone has different preferences.

The nickel wire in the Ni200 coil is a resistance wire that's meant to be used in temperature control mode. If you fire it too long and/or with a too high wattage you risk burning it, and you really don't want to inhale the vapors that come off it when that happens. If you set the device in temperature control mode it will prevent this from happening for you as it is designed to do, but it will only work in that mode with nickel or titanium coils (so stick to wattage mode if you use the one of the other two coils).

Don't get irritated, just take the time to set it up properly. The toptank is a fine tank, in fact I'm using one right now! For now stick with the .5 coils, (there should be one in the kit, it has a red o-ring) that will give you fantastic vape. :) No need to use temp control, plenty of people don't and the ones that due have been vaping a long time to know how to use it, and have the patience to deal with it. Temp control can and will :censored: you off so it's best to not use it until you get more knowledge. Don't give up you'll regret it.

Thanks everyone! Sorry I'm so irritable. I had a death in the family today and I'm not really myself. I put in the Clapton coil. It's made with kanthal and as far as I can tell it's made for wattage use.

Thanks for looking out for me! The guy at the shop I bought it from gave no instruction and my friend doesn't know as much as he thought. I'm going to a different shop tomorrow that has people who know how/care enough to teach me stuff.

You were not irritable. I'm sorry for your loss. :( The clapton is made of kanthal. If you have any more questions just hop on here and we'll help you out. That's what we are here for. I've learned so much thanks to this forum as have many others.

I'm sorry for your lost, but glad you stuck with us!

& no worries, most if not everyone here needed at least some pointers when we started, heck I still do on so many subjects today!

Enjoy your vape and make sure to order some spare coils if you enjoy that one because it will not last forever. If you're ready to dive in the the world of temperature control or get tired of buying coils and want to learn how to use that Re-Buildable-Atomizer coil that came with your Toptank just give us a shout

1. I love the toptank.

2. I buy more coils than any normal sane person (stocking up for the zombie apocalypse/European legislation).

I vape some of the different types (0.5, 1.2 etc) and find them all good, except for the Nickel, which are a bit strange on some temp control mods.

At 30w I'd definitely stick with the 0.5ohm Kanthal SSOCC.
BUT, if the temp control is working for you, then you enjoy!

I do not rate the old OCC above the SSOCC and most shops have stopped selling them. You can rebuild the old OCC (which is good!) but they are inferior now i.m.o.
