Thats my current wick:
Image02.jpg

At around 20 watts and 2-3 second pulls at maximum its too damn hot. It's not good at all. I cant get it past 20 watts at all and what's for sure not good and stable. What may cause that, so I can test out something different?

I am using the stock rba pre-build coil at 0.6 ohm as measured by my mod.

Have you tried wicking it so heavy that you have to roll down and stretch the wick to get it through the coil? Might try building your own coil too....the factory coil vaped hot for me as well but that was before I figured out to wick chunky. I had already changed coils a bunch of times before I realized I was underwicking. My Lemo and Billow RTAs behaved the same as the STm until I chunky wicked them. Hot vape.

I'm willing to bet that if I put the factory coil back in and wicked it chunky it would behave better but who knows what wire that is. It's not kanthal as we know it....too low of res for wire diameter.

I'm delighted with my current 32ga. twisted build taking 3sec pulls at 27.5w on the 2-hole afc setting. Warm, not hot, and way more vapor and flavor than the occ's could hope to deliver.

You nailed it.. I was used to a tight draw mouth to lung until this RTA.. Now I am done with all my old gear, hopefully someone will take all of it off my hands soon.

This lol

Though I've acquired some RDAs since I got the Subtank Mini and I've fallen in love with dripping now too, but I still use my Subtank daily.

ive done a loose fitting wick going through the coil so it doesnt deform the coil == fail.
ive done a thick fitting wick going through coil so it wants to deform coil == success

i have to twist/screw in the wick as im pulling it through the coil or else it wont go through the coil, i then undo the twisted wick cut the tail short and thin some of the tail out to not jam up the deck, its been working for me but ymmv.
yes it goes against everything i seen and heard about rba's in general, bwtf it works.

I did a little bit less than how you do it with my most recent build and it's working better so far. I'll probably try it a little thicker with my next one.

i vape the rba 0.5 coil at anywhere from 18-25watts, less than 3sec pulls w/light to moderate effort on pull, 60/40 vgpg.
my last really thick wick is also lasting me longer b4 switching it out so it seems thicker/thickest possible is the way to go on the stock 0.5 rba coil.
one day will try the fancier coil setups

Count me in too. Between my STm, Lemo and Billow I have all I need. All of my Protank variants have hit the junk drawer and because of my Lemo and Billow my Mech Mods and Drippers are keeping them company. Well...that's not entirely true...I do use my drippers for testing new flavor lines at the local b&m...lol

Have you also noticed that the stock coils for the rba are non- magnetic? At least mine are.

Thanks a lot. So what kind of build you'd suggest me to give it a try ? Whats your build in ohm with the twisted 32ga and how many turns on what kind of drill bit ?

Oh, and how much more cotton than this --> http://i.imgur.com/u2gJHYa.jpg ?

Thanks once again!

PM'd you Remko on some things.

My current build is 32ga Twisted Tension Wound Spaced Coil, 30 twists per inch, 7/6 wrap on a 6-32 screw, .109" (2.77mm) ID, 1.13 ohm, wicked with a 9.5-10mm wide strip of de-skinned kgd jc.

I vape it at 27.5-28.2w after wick break in. Flavor is off the chain. Plenty of vapor with 3sec pulls.

BTW: my juice channels are unmodified and measure 1.2-1.3mm wide.

Currently i use the stock rba 0.5 ohm coil. Its around 2.5 mm, so anything else ?

Go for 3mm ID then, what gauge wire are you using? I'd try 26g 5, or 6 wraps spaced out, and enough cotton that there is a bit of tension when you pull it through, then trim up the wick with scissors.

I've only done a nickel build on my STmini RBA, so I don't know what works best with Kanthal.

Just wanted to say, since my first post on chunky wicking titled "wicking for power and flavor" I can say without reservation that more is better in the STm RBA. I have yet to hit the limit for chunky wicking. I'm sure I will at some point but with coils this large ( 2.5mm-3.5mm) it's hard to overdo it.

A few things I have found with chunky wicking which I have already posted on warrant repeating here. An extended wick break in period is necessary with chunky wicks. They can be a little spitty and floody at first especially when underpowered. Flavor can be a little weak at first too, however after 3-5ml of vaping at higher power to stave off spitting and flooding they begin to tame down. After 5-10ml they settle in and require less power to stave off burning. Once there they absolutely hurl warm dense flavor bomb vapor! And do they last? I got 65ml out of my last wick!

Just say'n, wick it chunky peeps!

I must admit I was skeptical cig, I thought I had the perfect amount of wick as mine was working fine. I went big and it still works fine! However, if I turn down the heat or adjust to the two hole instead of the slot I normally do I get the ole snap crackle pop! No spit back but loud pops! I think I may have gone just a lil too thick. I had to both stretch and twist to get er in dare!

Oh, I noticed STmini o-rings are in stock at vaporshark. Kanger SubTank MINI O-rings - Accessories

I couldn't resist, I like the red o-rings, but it will be nice to change it up.

Thanks TD!

Wow each box includes Blue, Purple, Black, and Grey O-rings.

Just placed an order form mine!

Will be an awesome way for those who have more than one mini to tell them apart easily! <--- that's me soon!

How many mls of juice have you vaped so far? What power level are you running at? Whats your current build? Lets do some head to head comparisons.

I'd say about 10-15ml (surely the cotton is broke in by now), running at 20-25W, on a 0.7 Ω 28AWG twisted, 8 winds around a 2.25mm mandrel coil. Same as I posted specs on yesterday.

Oh, and its a 99% VG eliquid.

Oh, I missed that 2.25mm spec. Assumed you were running a larger ID. Larger diameter coils are harder to over wick than smaller. More cross sectional area for compression variances. Larger ID coils hold more juice in reserve for extended pulls, aid in coil temperature stabilization and offer faster cool down time. Give some thought to those attributes D. How they can effect your vape in a positive way. They do require some additional power to perform but the reward is a glass smooth vaping experience. Twisted spaced coils? Even more so imo.

Thanks

I'll try a spaced in the future for comparison. Right now I've getting my twisters to align and make the winds with perfect interlocked contact each time. <-- and they look pretty too! My Precious! LOL!

Since I had this coil working A-OK yesterday with less KGD and I'm about to change liquids (again), I'll put a smidge less cotton in this time and see if that changes anything. I really don't want to change this 2.25mm ID coil yet as I wanted to give it a week or so of eval time. If only I had a few spare rbas!

I will continue my experimentation with the STM RBA, although in the coil gizmo my next larger rod is 3.2mm, wont that be too large for the mini's rba? I need to find a 2.5 and even 3mm rods soon! The 2.25mm is a coat hanger rod I bent for the gizmo!
