Kanthal gauge and size questions...

Ok I know this is a noob question... But I think its because in the uk we use different units to measure things.

The coil wire I have here is .37 and .42
....is that gauge? I see everyone talking about .26 or something like that.

When I tried to wrap a coil for my protank with the .37 stuff ( 5 wraps) it was coming out at 0.5ohms! No good! I was aiming for 1.5 - 2 ohms.

What am I getting wrong here?

In the near future im going to get a kayfun to stick on a regulated device (thanks again for suggestions) so I want to make sure I purchase the right kanthal size wire.

In the USA we use gauges, in most of the rest of the world, millimeters are used to measure wire. In gauges, the smaller the number the bigger the diameter.

• 34gauge=0.16mm
• 32gauge=0.2mm
• 30gauge=0.25mm
• 28gauge=0.3mm
• 27gauge=0.35mm
• 26gauge=0.4mm
• 25gauge=0.45mm
• 24gauge=0.5mm
• 22gauge=0.6mm

You are going to want 28 or 30 gauge to make a coil with the resistance you are aiming for in the kayfun, most likely.

You see people talking about 26AWG not .26...

The best place to get wire (and other goodies) in the UK is the vape mesh company. They are awesome and far cheaper than getting it from e-cig vendors.

I get all my wires from there, really good service. You will notice that the wire listings state both the AWG and the wire diameter (e.g. 0.26mm etc)

You probably want to use 28AWG or 30AWG to make a coil in your desired resistance range.
The lower the AWG number the thicker the wire. The thicker the wire the more power needed to heat it up.

yeah I have no idea, maybe it is ohms per inch?

as to gauge as a measurement for wire, that is really an american standard, one that vapors around the world are learning in relation to kanthal, but if look at code books for wiring electrical in most of the rest of the world, wire is measured by millimeters.

30 gauge. The coil I'm using right now is 30 gauge with 8 wraps( not counting the ends) and an ID( inside diameter) of 2mm. It is 1.9 Ohms.

Yes, we have half gauges here. I have 25.5AWG and a few other half gauges. I am sure you could find them somewhere over there too.
I think we have them as a form of protest against the American measuring systems/units...

think of VAT as the European equivalent of State Sales Tax here in the USA.

Everything you buy here (online or otherwise) is subject to 20% VAT (Value Added Tax), some sites just list the total price, others (the shady ones) add it on at checkout.

You don't have to pay VAT if you purchase it for business purposes as long as your business is registered for VAT exemption.

Something change with regards the EU and the VAT?

While it has been about 2 years since I've made any EU purchases, the VAT was never assessed on anything I ordered from any EU country.
This due to my billing and shipping address both being in the U.S. Had nothing whatsoever to do with " business is registered for VAT exemption."

That said, shipping costs from Europe to the U.S. are such that if what I want is available stateside well.... Bobs yer uncle!

For that matter I still get tripped up on the distinctions between United Kingdom. Britain and England (-:

Different member countries apparently have different rates.
All online orders I've made in the past from the UK have not had the VAT assessed.
Same thing with orders placed to Germany and Sweden.
So with respect to the VAT, as a consumer in the U.S. I don't see a difference 'tween EU and UK.

Please tell me this does not make me an "ugly American" (-;
