Total newb rebuilder day 1 with with it. kayfun 1, Me 0...

So I got his yesterday. I also picked up some wool stuff and some 32 gauge wire. They torched some of the wire and the wool for me. They made a basic build to show me and sent me on my way. That was the good parts of all this, no real complaints there.

The bad is, I think when I got home I overfilled the tank, the thing had a terribly tight draw, and was a gurgle fest.

The ugly is I decided I would rip the thing apart and try making a build and starting over. This led to 3 hours of frustration and I have yet to have what I would consider a great vape from this expensive ornament on my desk.

I watched a few videos on youtube, they all make it look solo easy. Well first thing I noticed is I can't wrap wire close together worth a damn. I am terrible at it. Everything looks so enlarged in the videos but when you start working with this stuff everything is very tiny.

On the successful coil I did make it seemed like I could taste wool, yuck. I also felt like I was just cramming the wool ends in that small chimney but not covering the top of the coil. I am probably blocking those juice grooves as well. Just damn hard to work on something so tiny. I also think in my mind, I am trying to get too much wick in there. Maybe you really don't need much.

I know I will eventually learn how to get to this nirvana of a working vape here, but man all these people who say this is easy, my hat is off to you.

I did see an excellent video of a guy making a micro coil that looked like it might be easier in the long run. First thing I like is that the dang wires are supposed to touch in the end. This I seem to be good at lol. In the video the guy was using some cotton he rolled up and put thru the middle. That seems easy enough. So can I just use some 100% cotton balls like you get at the store? I am thinking of trying to make this micro coil this evening.

What do most people use for the wick? I have heard of something else called silica, is that another rope like this wool?

Also, I don't know everything about safety here. I do know I will not fire anything less than 1.2 ohms, and really want my coil in the standard 2 range. I am for now, just using this thing on a MVP 2, it has all that protective circuit stuff. The step where you dry fire the coil and when you dry fire it with the wicking make me nervous. Sometimes I see smoke and hear cracking sound, and I am just thinking to myself your about to burn down your house and blow your hand off.

Basically I just want to find an easy reliable build I can handle and get on to the good stuff about enjoying this thing. I like the hobby aspect which is why I got it. I knew I would have some growing pains with it. I also know it isn't rocket science and eventually I will get something down and working. Just looking for suggestions and help. Thanks guys

you need to head over to the rba forums there are several threads on the kayfun, kayfun light and russian's (they are all the same inside) showing 100's of builds.

I use doubled over 3 mm silica, and the ends just have to be long enough to reach the shelf on both sides of the head, if your stuffing wick in there it is too much and your blocking the system which wont let juice flow in.
as for the airflow the light + has an airflow screw on the bottom try adjusting it.

Ahhhhh. I had the same experience. Don't fret, you have made a good choice.

Since I have tried almost everything, I have found that the kayfuns are the best for flavor IMHO. So you are off to a good start.

You need to build it exactly like the manufacturer tells you to. I use only 2 mil silica and 28-30 gauge kanthal. They do have a tendency to leak, but the whole tank won't empty on you. Don't use anything but silica and make sure the wick is laying in there just like the picture. Once you get past that it is a great vape. The picture below is from the manufacturer.

no offense meant but if its leaking your still doing something wrong.

i have used kayfuns for quit some time, the 2, the 3.1, the lights, and the only time i had leaking was when i set it up wrong. usually if the coil is set too high it pulls too much juice in the chamber and floods. either that or I pinch an oring somewhere and let air in.

I couldn't agree more. I've never had leaking issues with mine, but at first, had wicking issues and realized I was using to much wick material.

Better to use unbleached cotton twin or cotton balls or cheese cloth. Not the bleached stuff if you can avoid it. If you can't do that boil it. Do not use wool unless it's Ekowool. There is also a hybrid wick called Twik. Cotton on the inside and silica ekowool on the outside. Good stuff.
Don't: Stuff the wick down to far or to tight. Don't let the coil rest on the air hole in the center.
Do's: Use of cotton in the wick somewhere is best.

I don't have the lite plus yet. I do have the lite. If you refill the tank make sure you let it set for a while upright as juice tends to drip up the drip tip and you may get a bit of juice out the air hole. Don't lay it on its side for long.

You can use a needle, a pin, a paper clip, doesn't matter. I've used cotton and silica in mine and prefer the silica. The cotton absorbs so well that it can choke off the air flow, so I switched back to silica. I make a loop and wrap about 4 or 5 coils of 30 gauge Kanthal around it. Use magnification. I have a third hand with magnification and a mag visor. I'm practically blind and have arthritis in my hands. However, with the right gear, seems like I'm dropping a ping pong ball in a basketball hoop. I take the loops and end up to the top of the chimney and cut at chimney height. Then I very carefully push the silica down making sure not to block the juice channels or the air flow. The build has to sit on top of the connectors, but not touching them as the air hole is right under them in the center. Less is more in the chimney. kayfun's wick incredibly well if you give it a little, not a lot, and don't block anything. Like I said, my cotton would just blow up in there too much sometimes, and while I like the cotton flavor a bit more, I don't like it blowing up at all, and the taste is not significantly different. Takes a bit to break in a new coil too. Once you do it right and break it in, there may be no better RBA build out there. YMMV. I have no experience with wool either. In fact, I can't remember anyone using wool, now that I think about it. Like Thrasher said, there's a hundred different builds out there. Keep it simple at first. A few coils, 2mm or 3 mm silica, doubled, not too long, careful placement. Also, you can fill from the top but you have to turn the device upside down as you screw the top on or you will get leaking. Otherwise, use the fill hole. I think Phil explains that on the video. Good luck.

So I did infact create a successful micro coil build and I used Cotton. This thing is coming in at 3.1 ohms. I gotta do less wraps I guess. I am weirded out by the cotton. I had some 100% pure cotton, all natural cotton balls from Target. I couldn't find anything that says organic on it. Am I inhaling chemicals? Anyone know? Thanks

You want organic, because they bleach organic cotton with hydrogen peroxide, and non-organic frequently use bleach. Bleach is not a good thing to inhale. One wick probably won't harm you, but get some organic cotton balls for the next wick...

Yes, this is correct. And hydrogen peroxide will not harm you, and may even help you, in low concentrations like that found on the organic cotton balls. I got mine on Amazon. You can also get cotton wicks that work really well. Good luck!

I'm a big fan of the micro coils. I use a 3/32"" drill bit and 7 wraps. With .28 ga kanthal, that comes out to 1.2 ohm. I wick with regular cotton balls because thats what was here, but I do boil them....some say not to worry about it, but I have enough time to boil them anyway. Just stick a little roll through the wick and snip it about as wide as the base. I've used cotton and silica...I keep returning to cotton although I think silica may last a bit longer. Rewicking only takes a second anyway. The Kayfun Lite Plus does have adjustable airflow...small screw on the bottom. It sounds like too much wick tightened up your draw, which will allow easier flooding. If it's still too tight, try backing out the little adjustment screw. Stick with it, a slight learning curve but you'll get it. I couldn't free wrap coils either, still can't do it very good. But Micro coils work perfect for me and they're really easy! Have another rig up and ready while you mess with that thing. Makes it easier to stay calm!
