I tend to wick my cotton coils pretty thick on the KFL platform. I have had one bad experience on mine and it was a loose wick, but not so loose it was obviously bad. I replaced it with a thicker cotton wick and made sure I pushed the cotton down into the wicking channels with a toothpick and, using the same juice as before, it blew me away. I make mine thick enough that when I juice one side of the wick I can see it wick to the other side, but the wick does not float freely in and out of the coil. And yes, I mount my coil, form my cotton wick, and thread it through. I leave about 1.5 cm on the end of the coil on each side and trim the wick at about that length. I use the tufts of cotton outside the coil to reposition the wick if need be. Then I soak it, position it so I can get the chimney "base" on, use my toothpick to position the wick how I want, reassemble and fill. That method hasn't failed me yet
