KFL+ Too Harsh, Reduce Nicotine or Go Max VG?

Hi guys, Been vaping almost 5 months now. Started off with EVODs, CE4s, T3S's, and Protanks.

I've always vaped 12mg of nicotine since I started with all these tanks. My local vape shop sold only 20/80, so I was on that for a bit, then switched to 50/50 when I started buying online. The 50/50 came across really harsh at first, but now I couldn't even vape 20/80 because of the unsatisfying throat in my Protanks with rebuilt rayon wicks.

Anyways, I recently got an EHPro KFL+ and have been using it in conjunction with my Protanks for a few weeks now. My first ever build on it I coughed so hard I couldn't believe it. Also, I took about 10 hits of it during a break and came back so dizzy I almost puked. That was just the first day though. It reminded me of when I used to smoke and got my first cigarette of the day after working hard, but on a more dizzying level.

Since then I don't cough as much anymore and don't get dizzy, but I've noticed on the days after I've used the KFL extensively, I've woken up with a sore throat. The first week I had it, My sore throat lasted for like 4-5 days. Now it's usually just 1.

I'm going to stick with 12mg 50/50 for use in my Protanks, but I'm thinking about buying 1 big bottle of different juice for use only in the KFL. I still would like an adequate throat hit, but what I'm getting right now is just too harsh, and I'm using it on low voltages as well (between 8-9 watts).

So what should I buy to achieve this? Should I drop down from 12mg to 6mg of nicotine, or should I go from 50/50 to Max VG which is like 70% VG and 30% distilled water I think.

Or should I just use the KFL sparingly, just for the occasional strong hit which I kind of have been doing lately. The KFL is nice and strong, but I'm still perfectly satisfied with my Protanks. I bought the KFL out of curiosity mainly, and it wasn't much of a learning curve since I already rebuild protank heads.

P.S. I only purchase my juice from ITCvapes now. At $19.99 for 120ml, it's the only place I can afford to use with the KFL as it's a juice guzzler. The juice is pretty good too.

All my Kayfuns run 50.50

Kayfun will deliver 2x-3x what you are getting in a Draw from a Protank so it would make sense to reduce the Nic.

You might also want to watch several build videos and be sure you are setting up you Kayfun properly.
To little wicking will cause over wicking e-liquid and restrict air flow causing irritation
To much wicking will cause dryer wicks causing irritation
Wick set to low will choke off air flow causing irritation.

Over Flavoring can cause irritation.

Thanks. I've only done a handful of builds (probably under 5 so far) on the Kayfun. My second and third build flooded like crazy. I found out it was because the coil wasn't pushed up in the middle. Sorry, don't remember all the terms right now.

In terms of wicking, my friend saw a photo of my original build and said i did a good job. I've been lurking on a few Kayfun threads, and it sounds like people encourage you to use a lot of wick and to not be scared about it.

I pretty much use as much as I can. I twist it up, then twist it through the coil one turn at a time. Rayon doesn't expand like cotton does, so I don't have to worry about that.

I know a lot of people sub ohm, but I've always done 6 wraps of 32 gauge on my Protank rebuilds which gives me about 2.2 ohms. I made it 5 wraps on my last Kayfun build. Came out to around 1.9-2.0 ohms. I prefer not to go much lower than that. I like vaping low voltage/wattage. I've turned it up before, but I don't get any more pleasant of a vape, and my wick tastes burned faster.

I use max VG in my KFL with no wicking issues. Order a few samples of your ADV in various ratios to test. Might just be time to lower your nic. edit: take a look at my recent KFL build if you want a reference build. One of the best vapes I've gotten out of the KFL.

Thanks. I took a look at the page. Looks like you're doing a 1.4 OHM. What exactly is "Twisted" Kanthal and how is it different than the regular stuff?

I've made a build before where the ends would meet the juice channels. It didn't really work out well for me. The wick was burned way too quickly. I think it was my second build and I was doing 2.2 ohms and around 4 volts. For the record, I'm satsfied with the flavor and vapor I get from the Kayfun. I just find it to be a tad bit harsh that's all.

Wow, $11 for ceramic tweezers? Geez. I try my best to squeeze the coils together after I fire it with regular tweezers, or I put a lighter to it while holding the coil with the tweezers. I'm just scared the burned metal on cheap tweezers is toxic or something.

It is just a single strand of kanthal that has been tightly twisted together. You cut the resistance in half because you're technically using 2 wires for one coil. Also, tons more surface area than a standard microcoil with lots of nooks for juice to sit.

Those tweezers are a godsend. Well worth the $11. Its so easy to squeeze and tweak while the coil is hot and malleable. The hype is real.

I dropped to 6mg from 12mg when I got my first rebuildable. 12mg was too harsh. On my kfl, 6mg hit as hard as 12mg in a protank. I recommend dropping down the nicotine.

Hi. All

Rayon also produces more troat hit which can be perceived as harsh.

You should also consider the possibility of some intolerance to the pg or even vg.

As a first step I would reduce the nic to half. If you still get a sore throat try a 100% vg juice for a week and see how it goes. If it gets worse change to 100% pg and test again.

Some people become allergic to cotton (sore throat, knot in the back of the tongue, etc) so it is also possible to having an allergy to other materials like rayon.

You will need to figure this out.

Personally I'm vaping anything between pg 80 / 20 vg and pg 25 / 75 vg from 10w up to 25w at 1.1 ohm and besides the crazy nic buzz I sometimes get at higher wattage (I vape 18mg/ml), no sore throat (and I use rayon too).

Good luck :)

One other suggestion:
28 Gauge Kanthal A1
Just add a few more wraps to keep the Ohms in your preferred range. More wraps = better surface area. Thicker wire responds more smoothly to heat up.

My Kayfun build blog

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Yeah, I'm thinking about grabbing some higher gauge kanthal since it's cheap. However, I do like vaping low volts/watts, and I use the Kayfun on an iStick, which can't get below 4 volts. It'll run too hot if I lower the resistance much more than this.

Ps: as a quick fix, you can cut down your juice with pg or vg down to what you want to try. The flavor might mute some which isn't always bad. Some juices taste great but are too overwhelming for an adv. Cut it down and it's OK.

I've done this in the past with the 50/50 when I thought it was too harsh at first, but I stopped eventually. I forget why. Perhaps it was just getting to be a headache because I usually had a little less than half a tank before I would refill and I would lost track of the ratio.

Did you dremel out the juice channels or are they stock? Looks deep. Nice tutorial BTW

Thanks. Channels are stock. Might be from the macro effect, because the coil looks monstrous as well up close.

Thanks for the tutorial about the chimney going down on the tapered side. I could've sworn those juice channels looked deep. Guess you really get a lot of variations from different makers. I've seen some that barely has any grooves to the juice channels.

Thanks for the info. I use Kayfuns on my DNAs around 14-17watts. I'll have a full tank and I will be part way through and I will get heat coming through the drip tip. I rotate around different Toppers but I have three Kayfuns, so it comes up more noticeable. I think I am going to stay closer to the Kayfuns and track what PG/VG ratio is in each. I have a feeling that my PG may be high or I may have to much wick.

Great hobby.
