I'm seeing mention of BT and a PC. If anyone has a link to hook up BT to win7 premium, I'd appreciate it.

I have a BT dongle and there seems to be some software on the pc, but they don't work. Google says BT won't work on 7 either.

Of course BT works on Win7!!! I have 6 computers in the house right now - 2 on XP Pro, 3 on Win7, and one on Win10 (ugh!) - and all can use a BT mouse.

-First make sure the drivers are installed for the BT dongle. Insert it into a working USB port, you should hear a little 2 note sound.
Click Control Panel -> device Manager. The installed devices are in alphabetical order, so Bluetooth should be close to the top of the list. If it is there, and has no yellow exclamation mark next to it, then it is correctly installed.
-Then you have to 'pair' the mouse and computer... go back to Control Panel -> Devices and Printers. If the BT mouse is not listed in the top section, put the mouse in 'discovery mode' and click 'Add a device'. Windows will search for devices and should find the mouse. You might have to key in a 'security code' - try 0000, 00000, 1234, or 12345.

If the dongle is good and installed in a working USB port, and 'Bluetooth' is not listed in the device Manager, then we have more work to do first. ;)

I'm thinking of getting Roku / Kodi.

All I have right now is an old style tv (no HDMI) and a DVD player that will play Netflix. That's it so far.

But, to do it right, don't I need an HDMI tv?

What's the difference in usefulness between Roku and Kodi?

Besides being able to watch Netflix and Hulu and stream stuff, I would ideally be able also connect to my NAS or a card/HD to watch the movies I already have. I have hundreds of movies on a NAS right now.

I won't have the money for a couple of weeks or so. So, specific links are of no use yet. The two links I saved already that y'all had recommended are no longer available.

I tried the v17 beta several weeks ago, before the final release. First put it on my main laptop w/ Win7, and found the native skin a bit of pita with a mouse, so reverted back to 16.x on it. Otherwise liked the menu layout, so installed 17 beta on a different laptop with Win10 and a touchscreen - much better. The touchscreen laptop is gone now, so I need to decide whether to upgrade and try other skins, or just leave well-enough alone. It also seemed to handle buffering better than 16.x without having to tweak the settings - I have a relatively slow DSL and at first v16 was giving me fits with the pausing, buffering, stuttering, etc. Then found out about the 'Easy Advanced Settings' add-on, and tuned the buffer settings.

Yeah, the way you're talking about using it is exactly how i do it, I have my htpc/steam box connected to my huge ext storage with all the torrents on it, the htpc I built out of my spare parts from old gaming rigs and its running a plex server for the whole house. I use Nvidia shields for all my kodi boxes, which use plexbmc and plex addon through kodi to access the media on the htpc, and basically you are using kodi as a media player.

The shields are what I'd personally recommend for that setup, they're a little spendy, but it's literally the best kodi box you can get without building an htpc for it. To me, feature and specs-wise they blow all the others away so they are not actually that much considering. You will also be able to connect it directly to any external storage to use kodi as a media player, and ofc. use netflix/hulu etc. as well, which is exactly what we use ours for, (most of the time I'll see if what I want is on Netflix or Hulu first bc their streams are always at least 1080p but w/ the shield you can stream in 4k if you have a 4k tv).

You can also get a fire TV box... That's what I'd recommend as a cheaper option that will also allow you to connect an external media source... As far as the picture quality, I'm not entirely sure if it's 4k or not bc we just replaced the last one we had in our house with a shield.

Forgot to mention that also you can get the old version of the Nvidia shield for cheaper (we have one of those) which uses the same software and does all the same stuff. You don't have to do anything special to put kodi on it and it'll cost you a bit less than some of the raspberry pi boxes out there that come with kodi pre-installed.

I have the old style tv also. I usually use kodi sittin in a lazboy using a tablet. I've put it on my PC in my office more just to learn how to set it up and run it correctly. I'd be happy with it on a big laptop in the family room.
