Great thread! I'm trying to get back into reading books again. I used to read all the time, and like others of you have mentioned, when I get into a good book, everything else stops until I finish it. I'm a mystery fan, but not gory/thriller types as much - more like Agatha Christie types. I like John Grisham. I read several of Dan Brown's books, but not the latest. Some of my favorite books have been The Lord of the Rings, the Dragonriders of Pern series, anything by Tom Robbins... I also like historical books and books about the '60's. I recently read The Help, while were waiting for it to come out on DVD - wonderful book. Right now I'm in the third book of the Game of Thrones series. I had started watching the DVD with my daughter, but I found it a bit too graphic, so I decided to read the books instead. It's also a lot easier to understand who's who and all the relationships in the book than from the TV series. I'm definitely going to come back to this thread to get suggestions when I'm looking for some new ideas on books to read next!

Serious book fanatic. I'm looking into an e-reader just because I tend to never get rid of my books, too. I have six book cases full, plus piles that didn't fit into them. I tend to read non-fiction, mostly military history, believe it or not. My dad loves it... I buy the books and he gets to read them when I'm done. LOL! I've got him set for life at this point.

There's a latest?? Definitely keep away from John Saul if you don't like gory. Ick. .

Now that you mention it, it isn't recently latest - it's one my daughter got awhile ago which I haven't read yet - probably several years old. The years just seem to blend together and pass before I realize it, anymore :)

Yes, The Lost Symbol is the one my daughter had, I think. (I have such a bad memory for book titles, authors, song names...) It sounds like I should borrow it back from her and read it, if a movie might be coming out. I always have trouble deciding whether to read a book before or after seeing a movie based on a book. I generally end up reading the book first, so my mind images aren't tainted by the movie, but sometimes it makes the movie disappointing.

I usually read the books first. You can fit so much detail in books and know what motivated certain things/actions. If I do see a movie first, then I visualize the actor or actress when I'm reading which is cool if I agree with casting :). I never visualized Katherine Heigl for Stephanie Plum, though. I think I watched 1 or 2 Harry Potter movies before I read the books and, luckily, it didn't ruin it for me.

With my bum knee, I desperately need stuff to read. I tend to read series, but I'm up to date on everything. I also read in "spells," i.e. I'll read really heavy stuff for a while (got into the history of the bible, etc for a while, Civil War for a while, etc.), light stuff, murder mysteries, biographies, and so on. Right now, I'm mostly into light mysteries, like Evanovich, Donna Andrews, Rita Mae Brown, Joanne Fluke, but I'm up to date on all I'm familiar with. I LOVE Harry Potter, but haven't found any similar things that I could get into. I do NOT like vampire stuff (don't ask me why, I just don't) and most of the fantasy stuff (eg I like a lot of Stephen King, but don't like the Gunslinger series). When I read serious mysteries, Kathy Reichs is my fav, tho I like Patricia Cornwell, too. I love Alice Hoffman, GCB (the book and TV series both), The Help, Women's Murder Club (Patterson), V.I. Warsowski, (sp?) the alphabet murders like V is For Vendetta (author?) -- that's all that's popping in my head.

I'd love suggestions, and they might also remind me of other things I like so I can provide y'all with more ammunition!

Thanks a Mil!! Donna

How about Lisa Gardner? I love her. Debbie MacComber (sp?) is great for light reading...I've read Christmas Letters 4-5 times. I don't see how in the world you kept up with James Patterson! That guy has new books all the time!! Just got Guilty Wives a day or 2 ago. I'll think of some more :).

I used to do the "theme" type reading, too - one summer I read nothing but westerns, another time nothing but science fiction:)

Have you read any John D. MacDonald - his Travis McGee series? They all have a color in the title ("The Empty Copper Sea", "Darker than Amber", etc). The Travis McGee character lives on a houseboat that he won in a poker game, off of the Florida Keys... and he has a great sidekick who is an economist. Very enjoyable (I thought, anyway). Another good light mystery series is the "The Cat Who..." I can't remember the author right now, and I can't seem to put my hand on one of the books right now either. If I locate one, I'll post the author.

the Travis McGee series is great, Moon.

I like just about all of the authors that you included in your light reading list Donna. There is a brand new VI warsheski (sp) series. i got it from the library just a few weeks ago. You also might like Lee Child....

Isn't it Lillian Jackson Braun who wrote "the cat who..." series?
