There are the manuals. And then there are varieties of anecdotal advice floating around the forums.

What's the real deal? While the quality of the batteries varies from maker to maker, they're all the same type; Lithium-Ion rechargables, right? So, the optimum charging procedures should be the same for all of them. Except maybe for the new Janty Kissbox ones, but the same questions still apply. So what is it? Do you charge for 8 hours the first time, and 4 hours after? Or, Like some say, for 16 hours? Or even, 16 hours, use it for 20 minutes, then charge for 4 more? Or is it just 4 hours the first time, too? And is it really a one shot thing, like you either do that the first time, or its too late, you've lost the option forever? It won't help to charge it 16 hours the third or fourth time? ARGL!

We've got manufacturers, sellers, avid users, people who can make Rubber Ducky and Mouse E-Cigs, and a few plain screwballs here; surely between us we can figure this out?

How long you charge depends on the size of the battery and the power output from the charger. Following the manufacturers directions should give the best battery life.

There does, however, seem to be a vast spread of quality amongst the manufacturers. Some people have reported batteries falling apart or failing to hold a charge. That has nothing to do with the style of the battery, but manufacturer error and lack of quality control.

Cheap cigarette does not necessarily mean poorly made batteries however. I have had marvelous luck with the batteries on my Super Cigarette. Although I only get about 6 hours charge from one battery it beats the NJoy by about 2 hours. The batteries from the NJoy and the Super Cig arrived fully charged (because of the good service of the re-sellers) and both charge in about 3 hours from fully discharged.

Perhaps others will chime in with their experiences. I am happy with my batteries but I also feel I have gotten "lucky".

No, LIon batteries do not need a long first charge or they die. The reason for this being said is that some come absolutely without charge, but otherwise lIon batteries are NOT the old acid batteries of yore. They do not 'remember' if their first charge isn't complete, nor do they care if they are charges small amounts over the day or large amounts once they have no charge.

What some of the differences are come to play with how the battery is protected. Some chinese batteries don't have very good overvolt protections so they tend to over charge and fry if left on the charger for a long time.

I don't think this is a problem with the more expensive ones (njoy, K.I.S.S, ect) but I would be careful if your ecig is of the slightly cheaper breed.
