To my knowledge what happens when these flavors come into contact with polycarbonate, it is a chemical reaction not related to pH, which is all a litmus test does is test for pH.

I believe you're probably correct. What I want to know is where to get a sheet, or other sample of polycarbonate to drip on and look for evidence of a bad reaction. I'm sure polycarbonate is all around us, but I don't know where/what to look for. Anyone have a clue?

Use an old dead tank.

I recently upgraded from the Ego with CE4 clearomizers to the Innokin MVP with the iClear 16 clearomizers and 10 replacement heads for them. I am blown away by the VV MVP and the iClear dual coil clearomizers. I think the vapor produced and work horse ethic these things seem to have is great.

The only concern I have and I dont know if anyone else has had this- is that after day 5 of vaping on the insides of my tank I have 2-3 scratches and or cracks.

I did not drop the unit and when I run my finger over the top of the tank it is still smooth so it is internal. Could the juice I am using be eating the inside of the tank? I am not using anything with citrus or cinnamon, so no culprits I have heard of eating tanks in the past. The only thing that is not a tobbaco flavor is applewood. I saw in earliar posts that sour can be a culprit and the applewood is the only thing that may have sour in it.

I dont have any leaks yet either so the cracks or scratches are not through the tank.

weird right?

Polycarbonate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia claims: A major application of polycarbonate is the production of Compact Discs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. These discs are produced by injection molding polycarbonate into a mold cavity that has on one side a metal stamper containing a negative image of the disc data, while the other mold side is a mirrored surface.

Not sure if they put a scratch-resistant coating on the CDs.

Most Recent UPDATE

My aim is to compile a list of juice and flavorings that may cause problems as far as cracking, fogging, or etching polycarbonate tanks. Anything listed here may cause your polycarbonate tank to be damaged. I am primarily focused on the polycarbonate tanks, although this info may apply to other tanks.

I am certainly not attempting to ban any flavors or ejuices. I'm just trying to help out some folks who continue use polycarbonate tank systems.

***Most, if not all, polycarbonate plastic by nature uses BPA in its manufacturing You can read about BPA leaching from plastics. Just google BPA. IMHO, it's just another good reason to move away from polycarbonate material.

Polypropylene is my personal choice for tank tubing because it it inexpensive and durable. This is the same material that is used to make syringes. Polypropylene tubing can be purchased here: McMaster-Carr. You can use 5/8"id x 3/4od for Liquinator tanks, Lil mama tanks, Big daddy tanks, Jtanks, and others. This tubing has a very slight curve to it, but will not be noticeable when cut to a short length. You can see a pic of a tank I made using this tubing with Liquinator endcaps here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tank-mods/259319-heres-pic-my-polypropylene-tank.html

The popular DCTanks can now be found made from polypropylene tubing. Polypropylene will not crack from a chemical reaction from using juices on this list. For some reason, most vendors are not stating the fact that these are made from polypropylene. IMO this is an excellent selling point that they are missing... These tanks can be used with some XL cartos, or they can be easily cut down to fit a standard sized carto, my personal preference, since I have a few dozen tanks, and I can't afford the pricier ones.

Glass tanks are also a wonderful alternative.

I am personally not familiar with the Vision Stardust type tanks or any of the clearomizer types. From what I hear, they are polycarbonate and folks seem to be having the same issues with cracking/frosting. I am also not familiar personally with Vivi Nova's, since I have found my happy place with polypropylene DCTanks.

All of the ejuice/flavors listed below have been reported by at least one ecf member to cause problems for them. YMMV.

Some of these are premixed juices, some are flavorings that DIY'ers use. Contributions have been made by myself and other members. So far we have:

Here is the list. Everything listed here has caused someone a problem with a polycarbonate tank. Some have reported no issues whatsoever with some of these juices/flavorings. Use at your own risk with polycarbonate tanks.

Perfumer's Apprentice lists triactetin as in ingredient in some of their flavors, so be sure to check that out. Triacetin has caused problems for many members.

Disclaimer: These are not "bad" juices. They just have the potential to cause cracking in tank systems using polycarbonate tubing.

Thanks to ECF Veteran member Stosh for alphabetizing it for me. :)

This list is fantastic and deserves a sticky (hopefully with future updates). Thanks for all the work.

It seems to me it might be simplier to list the tanks/clearo's made from polypropylene and resistant to cracking. I think it would put pressure on manufacturers to move to a safer material if buyers are requesting it. By the time a tank cracks, I've already vaped some of the melted plastic. With so many juices / flavoring reacting to polycarbonate, I think it's time that manufacturers need to change to something else. I doubt if there are many flavors that won't cause some amount of leaching from polycarbonates, even if it doesn't crack or cloud.

Maybe it's me, but I don't want to vape any amount of plastic. Yikes.

Thanks Bob. I'll give that a try when I dig out an old obsolete cd. I've got some pink lemonade juice that took about five seconds to destroy a clearo. I'll see what happens when I drip it on a disc.
