Another good question what is the solubility of chromium in our fluid. Probablly very minimal. I will look this up as well.

UPDATE: Okay. Just some data to mull over. These are only single sources from the net, but seem reliable. Not some random dude's site, rather chemical sites / manufacture sites.

1. Chromium (VI) oxide is an example of an excellently water soluble chromium compounds, solubility = 1680 g/L.

Here is the source: Chromium (Cr) and water

2. Im using SS 316 L: Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and in continuous service to 925°C. Continuous use of 316 in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important. Grade 316L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be used in the above temperature range. Grade 316H has higher strength at elevated temperatures and is sometimes used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures above about 500°C.

Here is the source: Stainless Steel - Grade 316 - Properties, Fabrication and Applications

3. A propane torch is a tool for burning the flammable gas propane (C3H8). The maximum adiabatic flame temperature a propane torch can achieve with air is 2,268 kelvins (1,995 °C/3,623 °F)

Here is the source: Propane torch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Therefore, it seems to me, when we oxidize these SS meshes (at least 316L) we are MOST LIKELY depositing a highly soluble compound that our liquids are a solvent for since they are at least partially water.

I know VN wanted this stuff only in the other section, but I thought it relevant to help us along in our push for a better component for our wicks.

I know this is off topic but I gotta ask... Is that really you in your avatar?

. Beyond that, I've also been making big lifestyle changes, as far as eating right, working out, etc. in the past few months
did the same bout a year ago, funny how that changes your outlook on everything.
i dont need to see proof of the human conditions all i want is people to start testing vapor and stop speculating about what ifs and maybe's.
no one seems to be overly worried about the slight burning of polyfill in cartos. yet they should.
or the fact that most of the cheap drippers and genis are chrome plated brass, and yet no fear.
how about almost every clearomizer using polycarbonate? didnt they remove poly bottles from shelves a few years back because of leeching issues?
my favorite - people who jog down the crowded roadways, raising their heart rates and elevating their oxygen intake while breathing in massive amounts of carbon monoxide from the traffic.

like with all things no matter whats going on we should always strive to improve the quality of this, but like anything it has to be accepted that there are inherent risks in anything we do. and we cant suddenly adopt a guilty until proven otherwise attitude, or many people wont even try to start vaping leaving them with no choice but to smoke til death
.
or even worse adding fuel to the fire of banning them, think of how easy it would be for the FDA to wander in here RIGHT NOW and cut what part of the research they want out of the post and say see? we told you so and if we arent doing the proper testing and evidence gathering we have no way to fight back and say hey thats wrong becuase............. as it stands right now they can say look at those test results of how much chromium is in that juice. (even when my juice looks nothing like that days later). and state: "we cant have people exposing themselves to this-banned" when the test was actually done to try and help vapors.

LOLOL.... NO....That is Kip Winger. Sweet Kip. Its poetic irony. He is all strung up in some sort of shower, one of the worst rockers of the early 90's-late 80's....with hunk of the month below the pic. It's one of the funniest pics I think Ive ever seen. Next to this.

By the way. I'm right with you guys. Just started a hard workout routine with my wife (personal trainer) and health is on the top of my list now. I want to get hard into kiteboarding and the healther I am the better. I dont want to vape Cr (VI) into my lungs. So I'm on this like white on rice. At least trying to be.

Gotta go.....WALKING DEAD!

Also, the health dangers of inhalation of the amounts of CRVI that we MAY POSSIBLY be exposed to doesn't appear to be well supported either.

OSHA states "Workers who breathe hexavalent chromium compounds at their jobs for many years may be at increased risk of developing lung cancer. Breathing high levels of hexavalent chromium can irritate or damage the nose, throat, and lungs. "

So, that doesn't even sound very conclusive for many years of breathing exposure.

i had made a thread a few days ago on the fc2000 porous ceramic wick that i just recieved. although i only recieved the tiny 3/32 and not the prefered 1/8 wick, i was not to optimistic. set it up in the aga-t with the provari v-2. as noted per instructions, i started out very conservative with 32g and a 1.6 ohm coil. i was told that these wicks take a couple of days to break in. i was immediatly impressed with the flavor, but knew that the performance would take some time. initially i could not vape over 3.8v without the wick drying out. i kept at it the next day but only on & off through out the day, mainly vaping my other set-up. today it started to really perform well, i was able to up the volts to 4.2 with no issues, so i decided to take off the dental floss and put some real wire on it. i did a 4/5 wrap of 30g @ 1.1 to 1.2 ohms and this wick is freaking rocking! before seeing this new thread i was going to update the older thread to post results. it did take it 3 days to get going, but like i said it was on & off. i suppose if you vaped the initial set up consistantly the wick would break in after a couple hours. now these results are for a tooth pick wick, i mean this is a tiny wick, i see the 1/8 wick even performing better. i have yet to do my normal 28g, for i think the wick is just to small, but i will try, it may take 7 wraps for the provari. i also have yet to try some sub 1 ohm coils either. but this wick is really wicking well, just as well as my ss mesh, and the flavor is just as good , maybe even better. this is far exceeding my expectations, and believe the wick is still not broken in 100 percent. the wick was a breeze to wrap, i mean it took me 30 seconds at most to install. i do believe i am done with mesh, unless something dramatically happens to ceramic, (like it lasting only a week or something silly like that) . maybe i am just so over joyed right now i am missing something, but this set-up i have going right now is sweet, like i said 30g/1.1ish/ 3.8v, its really nice. for any others that have actually tried the fc2000 wick, let me know of your results.

How about trying out some porous wood as a wick? I'm just thinking that if cotton doesn't burn significantly when wrapped with a coil maybe the same will hold true when using a wooden dowl? We even can try wrapping cheese cloth around the wooden dowl to slow down the charing that may occur? I think I'll surch around for wooden dowls made of different type of wood. If the wooden dowls are not porous enough we could try pokeing many very small holes in it to try to make it more porous that it would be otherwise. I think I'll look around the net and see what I can find.

I had a thought tonight...what about fully-rinsed activated charcoal pellets, slid in lengthwise within a small glass tube, with the top and bottom pieces sticking out the ends? the MSDS for activated charcoal is acceptable, even for our application.

MSDS - 29238

The only thing that worries me is that it lists "strong oxidizing agents" under "materials to avoid" putting it in contact with.

Where's your FC2000 thread? I've been using DIY PetSmart wick for a month and really like them. I tried an FC2000 last night and could not get it wicking properly. Giving a fair amount of vapor but glowing coils at the same time. Not a nice vape. Don't want to disrail this thread, so I'd like to jump over to that FC2000 thread for more discussion.

100 Degummed Hemp Fiber Sliver by TheHempHippie on Etsy

Here's one that I'm willing to try (after boiling it). Went ahead and ordered some.

hmmm? de-gummed? I may have to try this. I've liked the wicking of hemp, but not the 'earthy' taste it can add to the flavor. Maybe this 'de-gummed' hemp will avoid that. Thanks for the link.

So here, in this thread, please post any knowledge you have about these alternative wicking materials, your thoughts on this whole situation, etc. The last thing I want to do is incite panic, but after seeing the numbers, I'm pretty devastated that I've been recommending the SS to so many people. I'm not going anywhere until we find a better way- Let's try and make this right!

No offense, but if you're going to start a post with mostly-baseless hysteria about how dangerous stainless steel is, you've got to expect some people to respond to that panic. Not everyone is going to know that other post exists, and frankly, you're presenting it in a much more sensationalist way than that other thread does.

I'd suggest that if you're really just looking for a discussion of alternatives to stainless steel, not jumping to conclusions and essentially fear-mongering at the beginning of the thread would have worked a little better for that.

I honestly don't see my post that way, and I'm sorry you feel that it's baseless fear-mongering.

I think we need to take a quick moment to remember why we started vaping in the first place- and for me harm reduction was at the top of the list.

I certainly wasn't trying to cause panic or hysteria...quite the opposite, actually! Fear is only good as a motivator for meaningful change- other than that, it's a worthless emotion. I am not afraid of vaping just because one wicking material might be dangerous, and I would hope that the community can understand that this is a fairly isolated occurrence, not a world-of-vaping-ending issue.

This thread is meant to be proactive, not reactive. There's a big difference. I can't make the rules, but I would prefer that phrases like the ones in the post above be avoided here. We don't want to incite panic or fear.

Now, back on topic, I ordered a few fire-cured ceramic wicks to try out. I'm really interested in these, and I'm hoping that they're going to be an inert, well-working, less-risky alternative to SS.

edit: Oh, wait a sec, I see. I understand why you see me the way you do. You're from San Francisco... I know a lot (A LOT) of people who think in the terms that you do...(I was literally just thinking, "damn, this guy reminds me of some folks I know from the Bay...")

Just remember that not everyone who thinks something is bad for you is being pretentious, uppity or self-righteous. I know you're surrounded by people who are, but my intentions are very, very different!

Vninja is not the one that really even got this started. Someone else had created a post stating that they had a lab sample/result that supposedly contained CRVI from a torched ss mesh. He's just trying to keep it organized and moving forward.

I realize this isn't the first post on the subject... just that the "oh my God I need to quit vaping, I'm devastated that I've been recommending SS" rhetoric is a bit much, considering there's no real evidence of anything harmful, other than one person's hunch that there might be. It's probably also worth noting that, as far as know, there are no "lab results containing CRVI." A sample was sent to the lab based on a guess that there could be, but no results have come back.

I'm all for looking at alternatives, which has been happening anyway, but the first post just struck me as way over-the-top.

And, no, Ninja didn't start this discussion, but the way the issue was presented pushes it to levels of panic that, at this point, just aren't warranted. And this has nothing to do with where I live. I've lived a lot of other places, too... it's about not jumping to conclusions and going into crisis mode without any real evidence. Just like what seems to have happened with assumptions that my reaction here has anything to do with my geographical location. One more baseless assumption for the pile.

[ETA: I feel a need to mention, Ninja, that I respect your opinion on a lot of stuff. I know you put a lot of thought into what you say most of the time. The first post in this thread strikes me as an anomaly, which is one of the reasons I felt compelled to say something.]

In so many ways, I was just messing around with ya there, typing that edit with a big grin on my face- because you gotta realize just how ironic your geographical location is in relation to your post, heheee.

I'll see what I can do to abridge my first post and make it more PC. heh. hehehe... :toast:

This was uncalled for, attacking someones views based on geography. It has nothing to do with the 'subject' matter of the thread.
