When I bought my Alien 220w I also bought 3 pairs of LG HD4 batteries. I recently picked up a couple more 2 battery mods and am thinking I need to pick up 2 or 3 more pairs. Not had problems with the LGs but have read many people really like the Sonys and I have read Mooch's battery chart so both are good batteries.

Question is what real differences would I see between the two? I order my batteries from IMR and there is a $2/battery difference between the batteries, so is there enough of a positive difference for the $2 higher price of the Sony's? Not that $8 or $12 is that much money but I did just drop $90 on two mods which I wasn't planning on (and is $8-$12 more I could spend on flavorings for DIY).

The batteries you buy depend on how you plan to use them. At low wattage
(under 20W) you'd be better off to buy a 15A to 20A battery with a high Milliamp per Hour (MAH) rating. The higher the MAH, the longer you can vape on a a charge.

If you are vaping at high wattage (or plan to to do so in the future) you need batteries with high amp ratings that match the specs that the manufacturer quotes for your mod. That should be in the manual that came with the mod. Still, higher MAH means more vape time on a charge no matter what you choose. You just need to make sure that the amperage rating on the battery is high enough to cover your max current draw as stated by the manufacturer.

Here's a thread on ECF that speaks directly to your question. It doesn't address the VTC5A, but discusses the VTC5 and the Alien 220W and how much battery you need depending on the way you vape.

The Alien and any other mod increases current load the higher you go in wattage. Unless you are planning to reach the higher ranges of wattage you will probably be OK with either of the batteries you mentioned.
Is the SONY VTC5 18650 batteries good for the SMOK Alien 220w?

The thread was an interesting read, thanks :).

With the tanks I have I will vape at 22w-80w, mostly 22w-35w though, depending on the tank, mod and juice. Really don't see myself going higher than 80w, have a Clieto 120 0.12ohm and anything over 80w is too warm of a vape for me. Everything I had researched said a 25amp was what I needed. The Sony's are 500 mAh higher which should mean longer battery life but since I would have several extra pairs not sure I would need the extra life for the extra money.

At that wattage 20-amp batteries will be your best choice. Samsung 30q, LG hg2, or Sony vtc6 would be my recommendation. They're all 3000 mAh cells.

I'm a low wattage vaper in the 10W range. Still, I look for and buy batteries with 3000mah ratings in the highest amp rating (CDR) that I can find. I ordered 4 Samsung 30Q's last night. My LG HG2's are getting older and needed to be replaced. Mooch rated the 3000mah 30Q at 20A CDR with a max range of 25A in his latest table.

Thinking the Samsungs will be my next order. Having 3 pairs for 1 mod versus 3 mods (when I get my Alien back) doesn't give me much wiggle room for backup. The Battlestar will stay at home with the Cleito 120 because that tank works best with it. The Tesla will probably be my main mod with the Alien also staying home/backup at this point. Need some batteries when I'm on the road though.

I will say when going out of state I will take 2 mods with all the batteries I have (plus charger). Kids/grandkids live too far away and don't want the hassle of buying stuff on the road if I don't have to, actually how I ended up with the Cleito 120 tank (which ended up not being a bad thing).

In the range you are vaping you might want to take a look at the Eleaf iStick Pico 75W for a small, but powerful pocket carry mod. It supports wattage and temperature control modes and uses a single replaceable 18650. It fits easily in the palm of your hand and in a pocket. I usually go through two 18650's a day with the Pico and I just keep a single spare battery in a case in the vehicle along with a 15ml bottle of juice and a mini screwdriver in case I need it. It also charges through a USB port if you run out of batteries while away from home.

The Pico is often found on sale for as low as $21. If nothing else it's a backup worth having. The full kit comes with a Melo III tank.

Thought about the Pico before I bought the Alien but wanted a 2 battery mod. Thinking it might be my wife' next mod though, she likes smaller mods.
