I reapplied with a new company and cashed in my old policy a few years ago. The old policy I took out in the 70s was based on high investment rates and showed an enormous premium after age 70 (over 1000 a month premium change). The new one covers me to age 90.

They sent a nurse to the house to draw blood and take urine samples and fill out a medical questionaire. It was quick and simple. They ran cotinine tests on my wife and I (both of us took out new policies). I've considered contacting the agent to see if I could be reclassified. There are different levels of cotinine and the test will show positive even if you are just around people smoking, as in a smoking area. Yes, it will detect 2nd hand smoke!

I wonder what the levels are for non-smoker? I can get a cotinine test at my doctor's office if needed and have him mail a copy to the insurance company. Smoker's rates are almost double in some cases.

My doctor has a record of my quitting smoking. I told him and he entered it into his wireless laptop. It's uncanny how he records everything we discuss that is worth saving. On the next visit he will look at my screen and say, "Last time you were here, we talked about ... how's that working out for you?".

I wonder if the insurance cos could be challenged?
