In a 10ml bottle typically use half a ml of 54mg strength nicotine (vg base), half a ml of whatever flavor I want then fill the rest of the bottle up with PG. My occasional problem however is sometimes the flavor becomes rather bland in a somewhat short period of time or is bland to begin with. Should I add some more VG to increase sweetness or perhaps I'm using too much flavor? Or could it be the cartos I'm using simply getting old because I notice when I use a new carto, the flavors are more typically quite bold then after I've been using it for a few days.

I believe you got different faulty approach....."half a ml of whatever flavor I want "..then you have approx 5% flavor.... The flavors recommendedn usage percent differences from taste to taste,porducer to producer.. It could easy go from 3-20% needed to get it full flavored... Get your self an ejuice calculator, an learn how to use, then you would get better mixing!
I agree with Leaded50, your method of mixing needs some tweaking. If it were only that simple to do DIY, then everyone would be doing it. Half of the problem is that the flavors from different vendors aren't all the same. Some are super concentrated and only require a few drops, others aren't and require you to use considerably more flavoring to achieve the same results.
So for starters tell us who makes your flavoring, and what flavor is it? Then we can give you some good starting percentages to try. I also agree that you need to get a good calculator such as eJuice Me Up, or if you have an Android device, eliquid Recipe Manager Pro. With either one of those calculators all you need to do is tell it what nic level you want, how much flavor (in percentages) you like, and what PG/VG ratio you want then it will tell you exactly how much of each ingredient you need.
Next you need a way to accurately measure your liquids. Why is this important? Well when you hit on a mix that you really like, you'll be able to easily replicate it over and over and have it taste the same time after time. I use syringes in 1ml, 3ml, 5ml, and 10ml sizes with blunt tip needles. I use larger gauge needles for thick liquids like VG, and smaller gauge needles for PG and flavoring.
Finally the MOST IMPORTANT thing is WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. One time I just threw some stuff together and wound up with the best tasting juice ever, but I didn't write it down and now I'm trying to replicate it with little success.

Perhaps I should have been a bit less vague. I've been using the same 3 flavors from perfumer's apprentice for around a year if not longer. Vanilla cupcake, blueberry extra, and blueberry candy. I've been using the same dropper out of an old, empty bottle of nicotine to measure them into my bottle. I used to count how many drops of each it took to make a good tasting mix after letting it steep, but after so many months now I just fill up the dropper to the point I know that lavor will be good at. It's like in my head it goes "ok, vanilla cupcake is a bit stronger than the others so fill the dropper this far below the .5ml line, ok blueberry candy is weaker so this far above the .5 ml line, etc".
With new flavors I still count drops, but with old standbys I haven't had to for a long time. %wise I'd estimate I make vanilla cupcake at around 4%, blueberry candy at 6-7%, and blueberry extra at just shy of 5%.

Nm guys I figured it out. I added a little flavorin to each mixture and now all 3 standbys of mine are much better.... and the answer to the question you're all thinking now is yes apparently I am an idiot lol.
Kinda sounds like seat of your pants mixing. That method usually winds up being hit or miss. Accurate measurements work better and produce exact reproducable results.
