So I was all excited the other day when my girlfriend, who still smokes but occasionally vapes, told me she was interviewed by our local newspaper the other day about her university campus becoming smoke free in a few months. Of course the first thing I asked was "Did you talk about vaping?" She said that she told them she planned on using an electronic cigarette to help her quit smoking but of course they didn't publish that part in the article. Upon further investigation I found that the smoking ban included electronic cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco products. I can at least understand that people don't understand e-cigs so they don't trust that they are safe (although a few minutes of research will show you there is no second hand danger) but I really don't understand banning things like snuff. There is literally no way anyone else could be affected by that. Guess I'm going to have to teach my gf how to stealth vape.

Vitucci said it would send the wrong message if vehicles were excluded from the smoke-free policy.
"We don't want your car to be a safe haven, where you do any activity you want as long as you're in your car," he said

It's not like they are talking about having sex in a car on campus or doing illegal dr*&s! Why is it perfectly acceptable to take rights away from smokers? Why are smokers considered nothing more than addicts who are not very intelligent and somehow unworthy of respect or freedoms? They are really going way too far with these bans.

Well obviously if they allow people to smoke in their cars then they will think they are allowed to solicit prostitution, beat women, children and animals or build bombs as long as they're in their car. I know whenever I walk into a bar or restaurant that allows smoking I always think to myself "well hell, if they allow smoking in here I can get away with anything".

The only thing I can understand as a legitimate argument is that people would be subjected to second hand smoke. However banning e-cigs and other smokeless tobacco products is just unjustifiable in my opinion. Although I doubt it would be enforced at all for anything other than analogs. Especially since you can't actually see most smokeless tobacco products. I wonder if using the patch would be against the rules. As much as I'd like to see vaping be more mainstream I do enjoy the fact that no one has any idea what I'm putting in my mouth when I'm stealth vaping in public.

Wow, Nova is going vape free! I'm glad I don't go there. It's a great school, but I go to City College Fort Lauderdale and I vape in class. I guess it's a benefit of going to a smaller college.
Woops I meant to post the link in the original post but just realized I never did. Although it's really not a very interesting article and they picked the least persuasive thing my gf said to actually quote her on. And she says she never said the part about picking on smokers.

Nova-Southeastern, other colleges ban smoking on campus, even in your car - Sun Sentinel

Well hi diddly ho neighborino! I went to FAU but that was back before I started vaping, I graduated in 09. I hear they're imposing a smoking ban as well now.

I wouldn't be surprised if FAU did impose a ban. City College doesn't even have security. LOL! If they did decide to make a ban they would have nobody to enforce it. I get a lot of people that ask me about my pv and I get a chance to educate them. I hope the smokers at my school switch over to vaping. I'm in the nursing program, so we encourage anything that gets you off the analogs. My professors are M.D.'s and they all think it's great that I quit. Keep in touch. It's not easy to find others that vape in this area our age. No, offense to our senior vapers out there.

That's awesome that you can openly vape in class! My old boss was actually the one who got me into vaping so I was allowed to openly vape at work. But other than her I don't know any other local vapers. Wish there were more around here that I knew. I would love to have a local vape meet or something some time. There is vapestock coming up in june but thats all the way on the west coast and kinda far but I'm still hoping to go.

Ya, I would love to go also. I have finals coming up at that time for the spring semester. I will see how things go. A local vape meet would be amazing! Maybe we should plan one. I could try to get Bruce at COV to come out and join us.

It's be interesting in how that 'in the car' thing plays out... don't know their local laws. I think it'd be a real tricky thing, in a state/locale in which castle/stand your ground laws have been enacted.

Well it is a private university so legally I think they can enforce whatever rules they want (within reason). But it also says in the article that they would most likely just ask you to stop if you're caught violating the ban. "Violators face discipline ranging from warnings to expulsion or termination in extreme cases. Most will just be told to extingish their cigarettes, Nova officials said." So if I were a student there I wouldn't want to risk possible expulsion. But I doubt it would ever come to that point unless you're a habitual offender or simply refuse to listen when asked to stop.

I'd like to see them prove you have snus or a tobacco lozenge in your mouth. What are they going to do? Have check points where students and faculty have to open their mouths and show them they aren't using a smokeless product?

But it would be great job training for future TSA employees! (kidding)

Or would they make each student strip so they could check for nicotine patches?
