Logic Sponsors Study on E-Cigarettes' Effectiveness

LIVINGSTON, N.J. -- Logic Technology is sponsoring a study to look at the relationship between electronic cigarettes and the decline of tobacco use.

The Livingston, N.J.-based electronic cigarette maker has tapped Dr. Keith Ablow to conduct an expanded clinical study of Logic e-cigarettes in his psychiatry practice to determine their effects on reducing or eliminating tobacco product usage. Ablow previously reported that three individuals had stopped smoking when given e-cigarettes as part of a smoking cessation regimen.

The 12-week study will monitor and track patients' experiences using electronic cigarettes to determine the products’ effectiveness for transitioning smokers from traditional cigarettes to the tobacco-free, smokeless, battery-operated nicotine delivery devices.

"We are thrilled to work with distinguished psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow to conduct this study," said Eli Alelov, CEO of Logic Technology. "Minimal statistical data exists about electronic cigarettes and their effectiveness in supporting a switch from traditional cigarettes, and we think it is imperative to educate the public on the benefits of this product."

I'm not sure this is good news. He is not someone known for reliable scientific studies and leans towards 'quackery'. It doesn't matter what "we" think of him, but what other medical sciences think and if they can use his results or not. It appears the answer is "no", he's not going to get published in a medical journal or referenced by Medscape or produce repeatable results.

He will probably come up with something making a headline, whatever which way that wind is blowing.

However, Ablow is no longer a member of the American Psychiatric Association,[13] which is the governing body that sets the standards of practice for the field of psychiatry in the United States, and is therefore no longer bound to uphold those standards.

I wouldn't pay attention to him.

WOW! He reported 3 people quit smoking after using an e-cig. Is that the only reason they are using him? Sounds like Logic wants to try to sell their over priced e-cigs as a smoking cessation device.

Sorry, the cynic in me is showing. I just am not impressed or encouraged by this news.

Yeah, I dont really get this one. First off, Logic is sponsering the study, therefore, there will already be skeptics. I don't know that Dr Ablow is the right choice either, though I know he is an e-cig supporter. Lastly, doesn't our government have a "gag order" on these manufacturers making any sort of claims? I dont exactly know the specifics, but i'm sure this will hit a gray area.

It does sort of look like an advertising company who wants a 9 out of 10 professionals that recommend it or 9 out of 10 people it worked for, with someone with letters after their name to speak about their research that 'proves' this. He has 3 already.

I guess if even bad research gets someone to try vaping instead of smoking and switching even if its more expensive than it should be, its better then that someone not giving it a try.

I have to agree that he will be viewed as a hired gun by the ANTZ and anyone else who is skeptical of e-cig technology, so I don't see this as a general win for the community. As for the legality, the article talks to "transitioning" smokers to e-cigs, not getting them to quit smoking. Although we see this as synonymous, there is a legal difference, so the ordinance to not market as a cessation product does not apply.
