Background: I’m 62 years old and have been smoking for 46 years. I had a two pack a day habit and am as addicted to menthol as I am to nicotine. Two years ago I quit smoking and immediately developed serious heart palpitations and a disabling flare-up of Graves’ Disease/hyperthyroidism. I struggled forward for three months, thinking my conditions were coincidental, until someone said, “Hey, you got sick because you stopped smoking.” During my next thyroid storm, I broke down, bought a pack and had immediate relief from my symptoms with the first cigarette. I came to the conclusion that after so many decades my body chemistry was never going to adjust to living without nicotine.

There are all the usual reasons I wanted to quit smoking: I had chronic sinusitis, coughed up crap all day long, the yellow resin on all the surfaces in my home and car, my mouth tasting like an ashtray in the morning, and my children are non-smokers. While I could hide my smoking from my grandchildren, I couldn’t hide the stink.

First e-cig attempt: March ’09 I happened across a “smoke anywhere” ad on the internet, did some Googling and bought a cheap, slender automatic with 36mg “menthol” carts. My first drag on this device produced a massive cloud of spearmint-flavored vapor that made me dizzy with nicotine toxicity. I put it down and staggered around for an hour before picking it up again only to discover it would not repeat this performance. I had “locked down” the automatic battery. The supplier’s website basically told me I was doing it wrong and needed to take softer, shorter puffs. I smoked many cigarettes in frustration while trying to make this device work for me until I gave up on it.

Success: In September, I started Googling e-cigs again and realized I needed to try a 510 manual model with refillable carts. Three days later, I got a reliable device inside a popcorn-filled box; liquid that actually tastes like menthol tobacco and a big chewy treat for my dog. I’ve been vaping ever since.

The first day, I smoked 7 analogs. The next day, I was down to five. The day after, I forgot about smoking. A few days later, I lit one up and hated the taste! My sinuses are now clear. I don’t cough anymore. I don’t stink. My senses of taste and smell are restored. I get the nicotine my body needs and none of the bad parts of smoking. I am a very happy nicotine addict!

I've been lurking on this site for a couple of months now and recently began to feel I might have comments worth contributing here.

I had to do the same thing. Once I got my Riva, I just couldn't stop vaping. I had so many flavors to choose from and I was so happy to not be smoking! I didn't care that there wasn't a beginning, middle, and end until I got a headache. Then I learned to "put down the PV and back away slllllooooowwwwlllllyyyy..." LOL!

That's a great story. If only the FDA could read the success stories on this website.

I've been thinking about this all day. Since November 18 is the Great American Smokeout, wouldn't it be a great way to celebrate the occasion by having every U.S. member on this forum send a letter to the FDA, telling our own personal experience? I am thinking if we could get as many people as possible to send their letters on the 18th, to the FDA, and perhaps their own state tobacco control agency, it would have an immediate impact.

Congrats and happy vaping.

That's one of the reasons I decided to come out of lurk-mode. This forum presents a wealth of anecdotal evidence to counteract the misinformation that is being launched as the awareness of PV's grows. Today I sent an email to a bureaucrat in my state who had issued a press release full of scary B.S. letting him know I didn't appreciate his effort to stigmatize what has worked so well for me. I cannot believe that anyone would think vaping could be worse than smoking!

Good for you sjct!!
how much juice shopping have you done?

I was lucky—apparently—to hit on Menthol Tobacco and Turkish flavors that satisfied my cravings from the second vendor I sampled. I've tried a few different menthols from other vendors but keep returning to those two. I tried a fireball/cinnamon flavor that made me choke, a spearmint that burned my taste buds for hours, and a vanilla that reeked and tasted like perfume. After those negative experiences, I'm gathering the courage to order a chocolate flavor. Mainly, I approach vaping as a substitute for smoking. So far, I'm happiest when it tastes like a cigarette... only better.

sjct....that is so great to hear! Especially you doing it on your own....I can imagine that was tough. I went through chemical withdrawls when I quit....withdrawls from the other chemicals you find in cigarettes, as my niccotine needs were being met by vaping. It was no where near as traumatic as your experience, but I had only smoked for 25 years. Congratulations on your transition! I hope there are many happy vaping years ahead of you!
