The other day I was noticing diminishing taste and vapor on my RM2 so I pulled the cap off and to my surprise I found that the wick was in 2 pieces and laying on the deck. This got me thinking and that night I found a video on YouTube about wickless coils. I thought what better platform for this but a REO? I will add a link to the video when I'm on my computer as my iPad doesn't play well with linking video.

I twisted up some of the recommended coil today to try it and have to say I'm very impressed.

There is no wick whatsoever, nothing to add or dilute flavors, dry burn and squonk or change flavors on the fly with no need to replace your cotton. Sorry for the bad pics but it is cloudy today and the iPad doesn't take great pics without plenty of natural light.

Im not sure if this will replace cotton for me but it's looking promising. The RM2 is a great platform other than being a little small. I had to drill out the wire holes in the posts to fit such a large gauge, drilled to 1/16th, and wrap it on a smaller mandible to fit it all under the hood. It meters out at between .2-.3 ohms what're I would ideally like to be at .4.

The wire itself is dual 24 gauge Kanthal wrapped tight with a strand of 28 wrapped around that with a little space between wraps. The video will walk you through it when I can get it linked.

I've never tried Mundys Magic ribbon but would imagine it would be perfect for this application.

I had actually though of this when I first saw someone post about a wickless coil, or one of those ceramic wicks, but have not had the time to give it a try (also I'm incredibly lazy) :D

I take it you have the coil either touching or almost touching the deck. How does it vape? How many drags can you take before it's dry? Also any dry hit horribleness?

Saw the video awhile ago and thought the dude was out of his mind.

Hot metal and liquid sound like a bad combo~ But, I have 24G and 28G and i'm curious, so i'll get back to you soon.

What about a little SS mesh inside?

I would have thought the same thing had I not had the experience of vaping for half a day, noticing something wasnt quite right, and coming home from work to find the wick laying on the deck. It wasnt a bad vape, just not ideal. A little mesh would probably be great for this, I will have to try that next. With the twisted 24, it holds enough juice for a good 4-5 second draw before drying out. Mesh would probably expand that by several seconds. I like long draws, 10-12 seconds, and cant quite get there on this build. I would imagine with a higher ohm coil it would also have the same effect.

On the RM2, the coil is sitting on the deck, it would definately have to be raised on a regular dripper. As I said, I can get about a 4-5 second draw before it dries out on this build. The vape is very good as long as there is enough juice on the coil. I was suprised that when it did go dry, it isnt that bad. I was expecting a rip your throat out kind of hit when it happened but it just tasted and felt dry. Im sure if you were to vape it further it would, when dry burning it to check it out it glowed like a nuclear reactor melting down which I imagine would not be too comfortable.

BTW, heres the video

I've played around with wickless coils and ya, they work but man what a battery killer...Mundy's is fun to make (btw...Rip Tripper's method works pretty good) and I've also done a 2x22 1x28 "Clapton esque" type coil...

The only real issue with these types of coils is unless you're chaining the heat up time is the biggest issue (there's a lot of metal there, lol)...and if you decide that's ok, I want a chain vaper build (if you have multiple mods, this is not an all day build) they are quite suited to bf's because I can imagine dripping these would be a full time job but, and this is kind of a big but...if you chain, your RDA will get hot, real hot...in fact the first real burn I got vaping was messing with wickless builds.

...but ya, don't let me dissuade you, try them out, there's a bunch of YT vids out there but know what you're doing, they can end up sub, sub ohm, and there's a lot of coil mass...bad things can happen quickly so have "careful" fun (and use a serious high c batt) :)

I'm using Sony VTC5s and checking the build, tightening everything up and checking again before putting it on the mod. I can't imagine even trying to keep up with one of these dripping, it would be a full time job.

Surprisingly, I haven't had heat issues with this build. I've barbecued my lips before on a .2 ohm micro but this isn't getting near that hot, definitely warm but not uncomfortably so.

I'm going to have to get some more ribbon and try this with some Mundys Magic Wire.

After about half a day, I'm enjoying it and I think with a few more tweaks it will become part of my arsenal.

Also, just a very big FYI. Ray Lopez is a friend of mine (name dropping) and burnt the cr*p out of his hand when he accidentally turned the mod sideways and scalding hot juice poured out of the air hole. (this was a couple of days after he made that video)

Of course the RM2s hold a lot less than the dripper he was using and with bottom feeders we get the awesome feature of the extra juice being sucked back into the bottle, so the danger is much less, but I figured I should warn people anyways. Since there is no wick, there is nothing keeping extra juice from escaping and it's HOT.

Vape safe fellow Reonauts.

After using this for a couple of days now the coil has calmed down a little and I can get a good 7-8 second draw without going dry. I am going to try using a little mesh like tmel suggested but going to let this one ride for awhile and see how it acts over time. Vape quality, when wet, is consistently good and so far there has been no hot juice spilling out of holes, hairy or otherwise :p
