Hey all,

I have been looking into starting DIY and I have a couple of questions. My apologies in advance for mistakes, assumptions, or being long winded. Just wondering if it is for me.

I know that most of the answers are going to be to find what works for you, but I am looking for ideas on what works for others also.

1. Do you all make more 50/50 or 70/30 or ...? I like a nice cloud, but am not looking to simulate a forest fire.

2. Is the ratio of PG/VG a determining factor to how much flavouring is added to the base?

3. Is the nic level a determining factor to how much flavour is add to the base? If I understand correctly, the more nic the less flavour. I wish to currently make 12-14mg.

4. The juices I am looking at making would require about 15 different flavours to start with. Is this about where everyone else started?

5. Advantages: lowers cost, custom flavours, flavour strengths, .......

6. How much flavouring have people bought and then pitched because they were not to your liking?

Thanks for all the help, and I look forward to possibly starting.

If equipment is going to make a difference I am using: iTaste 134, evic Supreme, Kangertech and Aspire clearomizers.

Mine vary in PG/VG ratio constantly. Depends on the mouth feel I'm going for.

2. Is the ratio of PG/VG a determining factor to how much flavouring is added to the base?
Never has been for me.

3. Is the nic level a determining factor to how much flavour is add to the base? If I understand correctly, the more nic the less flavour. I wish to currently make 12-14mg.
With crappy nic, that is correct. I don't use crappy nic so I have the same flavor at 36mg/ml as I do at 0mg/ml at the same flavoring %.

4. The juices I am looking at making would require about 15 different flavours to start with. Is this about where everyone else started?

I think I started at about 40 flavorings, but that was well over 4 years ago and may not remember real clearly.

5. Advantages: lowers cost, custom flavours, flavour strengths, .......
That's a few of them.

6. How much flavouring have people bought and then pitched because they were not to your liking?
About 30ml...

Can't stand clearo's. I just drip because flavor is everything to me. I'll let folks who are into your type of equipment speak to that aspect.

2. Is the ratio of PG/VG a determining factor to how much flavouring is added to the base? Nope.

3. Is the nic level a determining factor to how much flavour is add to the base? If I understand correctly, the more nic the less flavour. I wish to currently make 12-14mg.
Doesn't affect it at all IMO, saying you have good nic... I recommend VapersTek

4. The juices I am looking at making would require about 15 different flavours to start with. Is this about where everyone else started?
I started with 2-3 flavorings at a time

5. Advantages: lowers cost, custom flavours, flavour strengths, ....... ALL<<<<

6. How much flavouring have people bought and then pitched because they were not to your liking?
A few... 1 of every 20-25 I get probably, most that I don't care for alone find a home in a mix
Thanks for all the help, and I look forward to possibly starting.

Equipment can matter, but that's the beauty... you can mix to go with what you have.

VG is a little sweeter so you may want a little sweetener if you make a batch with less VG.

If you read this forum for 10 or 15 hours you'll see what the best brands of flavors are. I got some Loranns oil flavor you can't use for vaping, but it wasn't tossed - it made yummy cake frosting. Good to make a list from recipes here and order where you can get different brands for different flavors. But there will still be trial and error - I have to mix 3 different chocolates to get a taste I like and then need to tweak that depending whats in there besides the choc.

Nicotine level can affect the final taste a little but I haven't changed any recipes because Of that.

I got 48mg Nic dissolved in PG so if I make 12mg juice, 25% of it is PG from that nicotine. If the recipe is 20% flavor - usually dissolved in PG - then my juice is at least 45% PG. Fine for me, I like it 50-65% PG but limiting if you like a lot of VG. A stronger Nic solution is more flexible but more hazardous. You can get Nic dissolved in VG or 50/50 as well.

Ha! That made me laugh  VG will add more forest fire effect, but more sweetness and thickness. Some say VG also carries less flavor. I can't vouch for this.

2. Is the ratio of PG/VG a determining factor to how much flavouring is added to the base?

I have heard that it does and that it doesn't, so who knows? Sorry I can't be of more help there.

3. Is the nic level a determining factor to how much flavour is add to the base? If I understand correctly, the more nic the less flavour. I wish to currently make 12-14mg.

Some nicotine is peppery. If you get this kind of nicotine, it will cause you to need stronger flavoring to basically try to cover up and counterbalance that peppery taste.

4. The juices I am looking at making would require about 15 different flavours to start with. Is this about where everyone else started?

It varies from person to person. My suggestion is to start with flavors you know you like to eat, and go from there. Also, it is helpful to browse DIY recipes and get the necessary flavors for those when you first start.

5. Advantages: lowers cost, custom flavours, flavour strengths, .......

The biggest advantage I see in DIY'ing is the ability to customize your ejuice to your particular palate. Cost is, of course, a big advantage also, but I find buying DIY flavors is almost as expensive as buying pre-made vendor juices because you get hooked, want to try them all, etc.

6. How much flavouring have people bought and then pitched because they were not to your liking?

I have pitched or PIF'ed in my case, about 1/3 of what I have purchased so far. I would expect to do the same.

Your equipment will most certainly make a difference in what you taste when you vape. This is a long discussion though. Some prefer dripping atomizers, rebuildable ones, as the best for flavor that is on the market, depending on which one you get. If you are very new to vaping, I would not concern myself with this quite yet and start with a regular 510 threaded atomizer that you can use to test flavors, a few drops at a time, without having to commit a full tank or clearomizer to it. I use clearomizers almost exclusively. While this is not the most popular setup, it works for me. The more threads you read, the more you will learn about the different options available.

I started at 100% vg. Hubby didn't care for that, so I made some 50/50. The only difference I notice is my coils last longer. The flavor the same strength, but not as sweet. I add marshmallow, as someone here suggested.

I started with 8 or 10 from one site, then a few from another company, and so on. I just bought what looked good. Get small samples to start, and the ones you like, get samples from a few companies to see which are best. I'm not sure how many I will pitch - I have about 1/4 of mine set aside to give away or chuck. But even if I only keep one out of four, I'm saving money. Every company is going to have a few winners and a few real stinkers, so if you get a nasty one, don't write off the whole company.

I'm using similar gear, inexpensive BCCs and one old top coil. They are reliable (once you figure out their quirks) and they travel okay.

I agree with getting a 510 atomizer. They're $5 or less. My first one lasted months.

This is great advice. I can't say I like all of the flavors of any one company. I like many from several. And I hate some from all of them.
