i just picked up a Twistedmesses rda for my first dripper. It's a four post RDA & I'm looking for a simple Ni200 build to put in there since I much prefer TC to VW vaping. I know about steam engine so I'll be using that with the 28 AWG tempered wire I just bought. I figure the machine screw method is easiest since I've never built a coil before but don't know what size machine screw or how to figure out how many wraps if I use a dual coil build or even if it makes sense to do a dual coil vs single. Any & all help is appreciated, thanks!

Hello fishwater! I haven't used a machine screw for my nickel builds yet, but I normally do about 12-13 wraps of 28 gauge nickel around a 2.4mm precision screwdriver. That puts me around .12-.14. I don't worry too much about how much spacing between wraps, I just try to keep it consistent. I find compressing the coil against the handle of the precision screwdriver helps in making the spacing more even when it springs back.

I haven't done any TC dual coils yet as all I have is 28 gauge Ni200 and I think .06-.07 wouldn't get enough power from my DNA40. That being said, I built a 28/28 Ni200 clapton last night, 7 wraps on a 3mm precision screwdriver came out to .08 and it vapes great on the DNA40! I hope I could be of some help!

Thank you, I appreciate the help! I made my first coil last night, took me three tries to get it semi-right but it worked. I did 11 wraps of 28awg around a 6-32 machine screw, it started at .12 ohms which was a little low. Not much vapor but decent taste, as I was using it the ohms dropped as it got hot, I also saw some pretty heavy battery consumption. It finally got to the point once heated that it dropped too .009 when the Mod registered shorted atomizer. A little dejected I decided to let it cool over night, tried it this morning & it worked but I didn't use it for more than a few puffs. I checked the coil & it was tight so I'm not sure if the build was just too low or what, I'll get back to it when I get the chance. I couldn't see how I could do a double coil build with my wire so I went for the easy single coil, guess I need some new wire to get to my target of .15 with dual coils?

Hmm, normally if my resistance jumps around like that it's due to a loose connection but you said everything seemed tight. I find that nickel wire is quite finicky to work with and it definitely took me quite a few tries before I could consistently build coils that worked the way I wanted them to. Keep on trying and with some fine tuning, you'll get it!

And I would think you would need at least 30 or 32 gauge Ni200 to get .15 with duals. I have never worked with any Ni200 other than 28, I could only imagine the thinner stuff would be a real PITA to work with. Give it a shot though and let me know how it vapes! I've only rocked single coils since I got my DNA40 in June.

Well, I stand corrected.....I tried my coil build again tonight & found where one of the coils came in contact with another, must have happened when I took the top off to re-drip last night. I straightened the coil so it didn't touch the other coil & resistance started at .13 cold & rises to .16 when hot. My mod (SMY 60 TC Mini) tends to fluctuate when I use it even with factory coils since it self adjusts vs locked in whenever I switch atty's. Tastes great with plenty of vapor, sweet!
One thing I am noticing though is my battery consumption with the dripper, I'm still in temp control, same heat range as my sub tank but I'm draining my battery noticeably in a session vs the sub tank in the same time frame?? I'm using the same Samsung 25R's that I always use, weird......
