so what is better?

I believe the majority of people prefer the clearomizers over the carto's. You don't have to throw the whole thing away when the coil goes bad, just replace the head and you're off and vaping again. the real question that you have to ask yourself is "what clearomizer is the best?" and that's a question only you will be able to decide. I loved the Kanger EVOD's and ProTank mini myself. Really easy to clean and maintain and gives some pretty trouble free performance.

Although...
Many still prefer the carto-tanks... some well respected folks here still swear by them!

so what is better?

It's all personal preference.

Cartomizers provide a little better flavor from the liquids. However, they are more difficult to refill and more costly to replace when they finally die, and like I said before, it's virtually impossible to clean out old liquids from them, so whatever flavor you put in one you're stuck with it.

Clearomizers are easier to refill, hold more liquid, and only the coil needs to be replaced and those a dirt cheap. They're easily cleaned with warm water, allowing you to easily swap flavors if you want. However, they tend to mute the flavor of the liquid slightly.

And then there are what is known as a Cartotank, which is the inside of a cartomizer inserted into the center of a tank instead of the coil and wick. These provide the best, and worst of both options. They hold more liquid than a cartomizer, and have better flavor than a clearomizer, but you have to replace the cartomizer center if you want to clean it out and switch flavors, the replacement cartomizers cost more than replacement coils, and they have a nasty habit of leaking if you don't get everything just right.

Heh... now you gotta ask yourself... which one!
Top-Coil clearomizers like the Innokin 16 or CE5 have a "warm" vape but can be finicky if you don't keep the wicks wet by "tilting" it every once in a while. Dry hits taste like :censored:!
Leaving them tilted too long sometimes results in some mild leaking.

Bottom coil clearo's like the Kanger EVOD/ProTank offer a "Cooler" vape, some swear they give a "Fuller" vape, easy to fill and change the heads but some have a tendency to leak a bit when they start to get low, and notorious for not wicking high VG (Vegetable Glycerine) liquids too well again resulting in the dreaded "Dry-Hit".
*BTW*
congrats on getting your 5+ posts! you are now legit!

Well... I can't speak for everyone, but my break-through moment was with the Kanger EVOD. I really loved the Innokin Iclear16's and Vision CE5, but man, when I took the first draw off a EVOD on my Vision Spinner, I was like "WOW!" That was what I was looking for. Some will agree, others will not. It really is a personal preference that cannot be described for any single person. They're not all that expensive so I would suggest trying one of each, assuming you can afford to do so. Take into consideration too that you will need to order some replacement heads along with your "topper"...
And you thought this was going to be cheap, didn't ya??? ;)

Also, depending on what style battery you decide on, picking the resistance of the replacement heads is an important personal decision.
I hope I'm not confusing you.

Have you thought of what battery you may get? We can go from there...

*Hey* everyone can chime in here! Thoughts?

OK... Well, that would depend on how heavy you end up vaping. Seeing that you are a PAD (Pack-a-Day) smoker, you would probably be good with a pair of batteries. A kit something like this should get you off and running... and the price is pretty good too along with shipping to Canada.
Kanger eVod Kit - Stainless

This doesn't come with juice though, so you will still need to decide on what you want.
A great step-up from that as far as battery life and Variable Voltage (VV) would be something like this...
AnyVape
I'm not familiar with this specific battery though. The Vision Spinner is the one I used for many, many months and they were great!
I don't know where you would hunt them down in Canada, but they're everywhere (except discountvapers... go figure!)

This way, you are getting something with the power to give you great results without breaking your budget and leaving you with cash to get some juice!

What else can we help you out with?

EDIT**
Oh, and with a pair of batteries, you have a back-up... Very important in the vaping community! We have a saying around here....
"Have a back-up for your back-ups"
Breaking this commandment is not recommended!

I still would recommend the Smokeless Image line. They have a good selection of different items for you to try and I have their spinner battery that I have had zero issue with. My loyalty and you can check the forum, is that if there is a problem with a sight unseen online produce, they will happily fix the issue quickly. I don't own the company so I cannot promise a replacement but for the few issues I have had, they sent new stuff out.

Of their line, I would try their T3, the T3 mini or their Aspire Maxi BDC. The only issue there becomes threading. There is 510 and 808 and all of smokeless image is 808 where commonly sold items like ego are 510. You can get an adapter but it is an inconvenience if you like something in 510

The Evod's, ProTanks, Iclear16/30's... Pretty much anything that has the "eGo/510" threading will work on the spinner. Have you read the other posts above? The MVP is an exceptional battery like the poster says, I have 2 myself... if your interested in the "Box-Style" battery. That has the same 510/ego threading on top so the EVOD/PT (ProTank) and the likes will also fit.
The Majestic kit is also a handsome looking kit!
These clearomizers come with a drip-tip already installed, The EVOD and PT1 are permanently attached. Get extra replacement atomizer heads, some juice and you would be good to go!

I recently bought a Kanger ProTank II mini (its glass/pyrex) and love it. Went out and bought the regular ProTank II and another mini.

Hell-yeah... The ProTanks rock! My wife claimed all 3 of mine (2 mini, 1-PT1) for herself! She loves them. And the benefit of not having to worry about accidentally putting a "Tank-Crakcer" juice in them for those who like the citrus, cinnamon or licorice flavors!

The majestic kit is still basically the EVOD/Spinner style battery, just a different vendor.
The box style isn't for everyone so it's cool. I wasn't a fan when I first got into vaping but they started to grow on me. :D
