Unfortunately, most "automatic" batteries are mere wishful thinking. The thing with automatic batteries is they are full of issues. You may have to draw really hard or sometimes it won't fire. I think most of us would be happy if there were eGo's made with automatic batteries that actually worked well. Even if you do find an automatic eGo battery, it will probably not be reviewed as working as it claims it does. The upside to this, is that with the variable voltage eGo batteries now, you can buy a 'mid size' that will actually be a big step up. I would caution you to maybe only get a 650mah battery though. I have a 1300mah VV eGo and it is quite long, certainly not something I really would want to bring out of my house with me.

After lots of reading and researching (my girlfriend teases me relentlessly about my obsessive researching habits) I'm actually thinking APV for me. Gasp. I had the DIY and mechanical mods in my head as the normal way of APVs for some reason and that was very intimidating. But time and reading cures all ills. LOL I have a separate thread for finding myself an APV in the appropriate forum.

My girlfriend however is a fan of the simple, and she is going ego, so this thread is actually still very helpful. I have convinced her that a fire button is not the end of the world after a trip to a B&M to actually try the things. So manual is now not an issue. Yay! A world of options just flooded in.

As to size, we have the V2 long cigs, which are either 120mm or 140mm, can't remember. So we're used to carrying around ridiculously long PVs. They are the only batts that last even a few hours for us from V2. Shorty batts would be a joke. I know the egos of similar length will also be much thicker, but if it means she can get through a single day without having to worry about changing it multiple times, it's worth it.

Are branded egos better than clones from FastTech? Or roughly similar? Talking non VV. They have an 8pk of 1300mah egos for under $50 right now that look like a good deal but if they're crap I'd rather pay for the genuine article. But I see clones linked all the time from ECF so I wondered.

APVs aren't that difficult, really. if you can manage an ego-c twist, you can manage an APV. most of them allow you to vary voltage, some you can vary amperage (mechanical aside for now). I like my itaste SVD for every day, or my K100 (mechanical). the itaste can be used with 1 18350 (which makes it pretty short), or with 1 18650. The 18650 lasts me almost all day, but i vape a lot (like, chain-vape all day:)). the other advantage to something like this, is that when the battery is dead, you put in another battery, not plug the whole mod into the charger. you can always carry spare batts

Fast tech is pretty reliable. I would feel comfortable ordering most stuff from them, like your deal on eGo batteries, especially if it is not VV. I really would caution you to get some different sizes though, not just the 1300mah. It is considerably bigger than what you are used to. You may want to get at least one or two 400mah-650mah. They won't last as long, but are about 2 inches shorter.
