Since you have had experience with a VV and VW device before, there would be no harm in going to a VV/VW Mod. Mech mods are a lot of work and you do have to know what you are doing to ensure your safety. Learning ohms law if you haven't already is the first thing you need to do before going up to a mod. I also suggest reading up on battery safety.
I started out with a Tesla M5 at $30, which was very cheap compared to how expensive other mods are. The most important thing to remember is that mech mods have no wire and no protection in them. This is good if you want to buy a clone of the mod you want before its significantly cheaper. The downside is that it's very unsafe if used incorrectly. Mech's are just tubes of stainless steal for your battery, so don't be afraid of clones if you are.
My first VV/VW device was an Innokin VTR which is a bit pricy to some at $100. But I used mechs more than anything else.
In my opinion go for a Nemesis Clone. You can get them very cheap (Especially if you buy one from Fasttech and don't mind waiting a month for it to arrive). Ur able to take parts off or add parts on to appeal to different sized batteries or a Kick 2.
