I have another question:

I'm using mine with 20mg salt juice and when I dial down the airflow to a tight MTL draw I get a harsh vape. Seems like I need to open the airflow to a restricted lung-hit to get rid of the harshness.

Is that typical with the Orion?

I don't get the same thump from the same juice (or higher 48-50mg) in a Boulder Rock, Mjet, or Suorin Drop. I'm wondering if it is the Orion pod and the MTL airflow design that is contributing to the throat hit. It almost makes me want to start hacking compared to the others.

It has to be, otherwise what else could it be? But it isn't always this way for everybody since the juice (including flavor), wattage, boost, and heaven knows what else can effect this too. I don't experience this at all here with my Orions. But I vape freebase 18mg-24mg most of the time. I also vape 70VG, what percentage are you using?

Speaking of the Boulder, when I vape something like Mr Salt-E Blue Razz Lemonade 45mg through it, I get really bad harshness and there is no dang adjustments like the Orion I can do to fix it. :(

Well, I tried some Mr Salt-E Liquid at 45mg, which is fine in my other pods, and set the Orion to a tight MTL draw and it was harsh enough to make me cough. Not sure what the PG content of Mr Salt-E is, but I'm figuring that since it's fine in my other pods, the harshness must be a variable with the Orion.

I emptied the pod and changed to a DIY custard at 20mg - 70 VG thinking the lower nic would help. Not as bad but still a bit harsh for MTL on the Orion.

I'm using a .5-ohm pod at the lowest power setting.

It's a bit disappointing to me as I didn't get the Orion to use as a direct lung device - I have plenty of those. I got it as a possible longer-life replacement for my stick mods doing low-power MTL.

Mr Salt I believe is 50PG/50VG. I am generally using 70VG 18-24mg freebase through my Orion pods. And I generally use the 0.25 pods over the 0.5 pods. And no, I am not DL on them but MTL on them. But if I had to, I could do a tight DL on an Orion. And I have no harshness at all from my vape on the Orion. And it is very similar vape that I get from my MTL RDAs and RTAs. But nothing like my DL RDAs and RTAs.

And don't forget, all nic salt are not the same. Generally they are less harsh than freebase, but that doesn't mean all are. Nic salt can be formulated for more or less harshness. And I noticed that Mr Salt tends to be harsher than most. But you don't know for sure without the manufacture supplying this information or getting a lab report or something.

Yes I heard things like use .5 pods for MTL and .25 pods for DL. I also heard use .5 for flavor and .25 for vapor. And last but not least, use .5 for nic salt and .25 for freebase. You know what? I don't believe any of those statements are 100% accurate. Because how you want your vape and how they vape to you trumps all of the above statements.

@BillW50 I did have some harshness in my Orions, compared to my Kabuki's and my byLeo Sophias, until I tweaked the Orions to the settings you suggested way back. They really did the trick for me. Love these little guys. @gpjoe you might want to scroll back through this thread and look for that.

It’s a great dtl and restricted dtl device. Not a good true mtl

I haven't really tried a lot of different settings yet, but tend to agree with this statement.

The Orion is a beautiful little device, well made, attractive, and small, but as somebody else also mentioned that while it may do MTL it doesn't seem best suited for MTL...at least IMO...so far. I love the size and it gives me a nice form factor for vaping around town but I cannot see it replacing my pods as the high-nic, high-capacity (battery and juice) MTL device I was seeking. So far, the stick mods are better, for me, at a much lower price point.

If I were in the EU and restricted to 2mls of juice I would likely be thrilled with the Orion as a DTL device but being in the less restrictive US market - this thing is less attractive to me. I suppose it may serve a useful purpose for some (many?) but it is not filling any particular need of mine, other than ooooooh, that's nice!

Thank you - I will do this. It's a lot of reading but I want this to work. :)

Ah... am in the US and when I run out the door I am more than likely to grab one of my Orions than one of my sticks or box mods. Even sometimes I go to another room like make something in the kitchen, I'll often grab an Orion and bring it with me for that time. ;)

have you used SS coils before? some (including me) react to it a bit, like that

So, just to be clear, I have mods all over the house. REO Grands, Pulse 80s, Billet Boxes, dual battery regulated mods, mech tubes, Suorin Drops, Juuls, Myjets, Boulder Rocks...and I use them all. As I type this I am sitting in the kitchen with two Grands, and Orion, and more than a few stick mods. I may grab any one, at any time.

I am still dual using - 5 years into vaping I still smoke two butts per day, down from a pack. I find that even if I chain vape 6mg juice in my mods, I still crave a smoke. With 40-50mg juice in my pods, and especially the Juul, I can take a few puffs and be satisfied for a while. Also noticed that my dual used has gone down a bit with the high nic stick mods and the Juul.

My sole reason for getting the Orion was to get a high capacity mod that I could refill and MTL high-nic salts, as a replacement for the sticks, so in that regard it's a fail for me if I'm hacking with every MTL hit. Still very much love the device which works beautifully with a restricted lung hit but it didn't fill any particular need for me. I can grab a couple Boulder Rocks at ten bucks apiece and head out the door knowing I'm all set for hours of MTL using 50mg juice with no tightness in my chest or hacking.

I keep mine at my desk or in my spare room which I call my vape stockroom. I don't leave them all over the house because I would lose track of what was where.

Sounds like you generally don't get enough nic. I generally when I MTL, puff and don't really inhale into my lungs much. So even chain vaping this way with 24mg I still might not be getting enough.

Although I also DL vape. And there puffing doesn't cut it and everything goes into your lungs. And most can't DL 24mg juice let alone even 12mg because it is just too harsh. I haven't tried 12mg when DL in awhile, but I should try it again. But normally I am DLing with 6mg is it is just fine with me.

And I got to tell you that if you accidently drip with 24mg juice and you meant to MTL it like first thing in the morning, but unconsciously DL instead, you probably won't want or need nic for a couple of hours at least.

I have a Boulder Rock and I really hate it. The fire button is in a weird spot to fire for one. Then when you thumb fire it, the light is blocked by your fingers on the otherside. The pods leak all of the time. And when wiping them down, that tiny plug likes to pop off and get lost.

But that isn't the worst of it. The favor from my juices taste horrible in those pods. And it gets the vape way too hot (there is no adjustment besides the speed in your draw). And then the plastic starts to melt and then you get plastic taste in your vape. Then there is that noise. It is a very noisy pod.

Maybe you like vaping this way, I dunno. But the Boulder Rock was a huge failure for me. But if you managed to get passed these problems, let me know because I would like to use it if those problems were gone.

Never had a problem with the Rock. No heat, no melting, good flavor, good vapor, no harshness, no dry hits. I don't care that I can't see the light, it doesn't tell me anything anyway - until the battery is dead and it flashes - but I know it's dead cause I didn't get any vapor on the last hit. I love mine, and think they are a steal at ten bucks. I have used the same pod for weeks at work (well, when I was working) taking a few 10-minute breaks for my nic-fix here and there (as frequent as an average smoke break) and the battery and juice on a single Rock would easily get me through an 8-hour day. I used two in rotation for 8 months at work and still use them today.

Does it compare to the Orion? Of course not, it's plastic and has kind of a loose MTL draw, and messy to fill, but it suits me just fine and does everything I want from a pod mod, cheaply. For me it's a win and a great value. Oh yeah, and there is a slight whistle. :)

Anyway - I don't want to junk up the thread with a bunch of non-Orion talk and negativity. I still think it's a wonderful little device, with a rock-solid chipset, top fill, good looks, high-quality manufacturing and a very good DTL vape with good flavor - and I will happily use mine with 20-30mg salts while taking short, low-power DTL hits.

I have by no means thrown in the towel. :)

No, I want to know more how you got your Rock to vape nicely. I believe the Boulder Rock thread is still open and we can continue there. ;)

As for your Orion problems, I dunno. Some juices are muted with the Orion, but I can say that about everything. Even using my RDAs. Some flavors needs a different build to make them shine. Take Blu's Gold Leaf. I love that stuff in a MyBlu. But I tried Gold Leaf in a dripper, Vladdin RE, Minifit, Exceed Edge, Crown, Orion, and I don't know what else. But it just isn't the same. :(
