Low to 0 Nic with Maximum Hit?

My experience is that if I drop some menthol crystals into
any juice it KaBangS into a nice throat hit. No alcohol needed.

The other factor, Jim, is what are you using to deliver your vape.
With a high voltage device, a throat hit is kind of a given, provided
you are not vaping straight Glycerin.

Another factor which worked for me is using more PG than VG. Of course,
heavy on the PG and light on the VG switches me from a human fog machine
into a throat hitting fool. Add some menthol, and ZoW! A few drops of vodka
or everclear? There is a noticeable taste difference, and a different throat kick.

Bottom line:

Alcohol
Menthol
High Voltage
PG rather than VG

Okay,
Father Luke

I'm going out in a while to get some PG. I was always happy with VG, but that was with high nic.

I was never a menthol person, but the hit I get from the high nic feels much like menthol, so I'll give it a try. Where do you suggest to get the crystals from? How 'bout Everclear?

I'm not running high voltage. My passthrough @ 5v is the highest I go. I'm going to start using my Nicostick as soon as the batteries get here.

If I can get this hit thing down, I'll be in good shape. No more juice orders, or e-cig battery orders. I can concentrate on more attys.

I don't drink either, and I don't use the alcohol idea very much. I
thought I had to use alcohol to dissolve the menthol, but it's not true.
Menthol dissolves in PG and it won't recrystallize.

You were asking where to buy menthol. I bought mine here:
MENTHOL CRYSTALS 4 Ounces oz Mentha arvensis 100% pure - eBay (item 190318933687 end time Aug-01-09 22:48:36 PDT)

I read a lot of people who absolutely swear up and down that they do
not like the menthol taste. These are the same people who now vape
frappachino, strawberry, carmel, lemon drops. So, I know old dogs can
learn new tricks. I smoked 4 packs of Luckys, and now I suck up
menthol. Sure, sure, girls are the only ones who smoke menthol. Right.

All I know is I like me my throat hits. And adding blueberry, or some
other flavor to the mix gives me an interesting flavor experience. I'll be
experimenting with carmel next. Maybe an Ry4 (or whatever it's called),
with menthol crystals added. I mix menthol in this:

One cautionary note: Too much menthol will ruin a mix. Go real slow
with the menthol ... a little really does go a long way, and just because
you have all this menthol, doesn't mean you have to use it all in your
10ml mix.

Add 30% Everclear to 70% VG and 5 drops of Menthol liquid. Will produce a nice throat hit.
Dan

Menthol liquid:
2.5ml crushed menthol crystals disolved in 7.5ml everclear.

Added:
If your brave add a couple drops of liquid jalapeño juice :) Always a guarentee!

I was just discussing the use of jalapeno juice...sweeet!!!!

Suggestion: use a cheese grater.

Hadn't thought of that. I completely agree; or my blender on liquify, actually. It's interesting that thought occured to me after the fact.

I just dove in with mincing because I've done that for a number of indian food recipes, and I'm pretty fast at mincing stuff.

As far as success, I'll note that I currently plan to let the mixture (infusion?) stand until Wednesday before starting to strain it. I'm nuking it 10 seconds a day and also crushing and pressing the ginger for a few minutes a day. It's definitely getting stronger, but I want to give the PGA plenty of time to leech out all of the flavor/hot tasting components.

I know for some alcohol infusions (to drink) recipes, the instructions say to wait for months, but in such cases they are talking about larger skinned fruits getting completely saturated with a standard 80 proof alcohol, rather than minced crushed root in 95% alcohol. Plus, I just don't have the patience on this first try to wait that long. :)

But it will probably by Thurs or Friday of this week before I'll have a report on the results.

Some other flavors that could be made that could potentially have a solid throat hit are

Mustard
Horseradish
Wasabi

This could be derived from commercial extracts, or at home from fresh raw mustard seeds, horseradish root, and Wasabi root.

Vinegar would immediately need to be added to horseradish to keep it from becoming bitter, or prepared vinegar based horseradish could be used.
Mustard seed extract comes as an oil which could gunk up an atomizer, but may be OK in very small quantities dissolved in alcohol and added to a VG or PG mixture.

Today I finished making a ginger extract and tried it out. I found it had a pronounced ginger flavor, and a noticeable but not overwhelming hit or burn in the nose and on the tip of the tongue; some in the back of the throat as well, but that may have just been the added grain alcohol.
I started with a minced ginger/PGA mixture I had been aging for 3 days.
I strained it through a mesh tea ball and pressed the remaining ginger with a spoon to get out a remaining opaque liquid.
I then used coffee filters to strain the liquid three times until it was no longer milky but a clear yellow.
I mixed it with 30 % VG, 30 % PG, and 40 % of the PGA based ginger extract.

I would say on the whole this created a very pleasant ginger flavored vaping mixture, but that it did not produce as significant of a throat hit as I had hoped it would.
Here are pictures of the process.

That is a possibility - I would like to be able to get rid of the flavors and get just the elements that give the kick in these items - although in diluted form, of course. The pure chemical(s) that actually cause these various burning feelings are probably extremely powerful in a pure state, possibly even dangerous. Or they can have an opposite effect, like capsecum ?sp? (the active ingredient in pepper hotness). It is used in pure form as an anesthetic because when applied in direct undiluted state, it completely overloads pain sensing nerves so they don't send any pain signal.

I'm still excitedly waiting for my Menthol Crystals to arrive, but so far, alcohol gives me the strongest throat hit, followed by the Mint flavors, and then nicotine. As with Walrus' descriptions and videos of using red pepper extracts, it is more of a slow burn than a hit, that grows and grows the more you use it. Fine if you like that thing (I do), but not the same as a throat hit from an analog. I am guessing our other suggestions (mine is in post #26), mustard seed, and your suggestion of onion, would have the same effect. They are more mouth heat than nasal or throat heat. Now wasabi and horseradish do hit the nose/sinuses hard, sometimes making my eyes water at full strength, and I assume they might have a similar effect on the throat, making for more of a throat hit. It's not just things that produce a hot or cold effect on mucus membrane- red pepper juice does that, but has a lingering burn more than a throat hit. It seems like it's things whose vapor specifically has an effect. I can definitely say that is the case for wasabi odor, but it is hot, rather than cool like menthol or mint. I wish I knew more about chemistry and physiology...
Any scientists care too chime in with suggestions? ;)
