Low voltage = harshness?

Hey all,

I have some lower quality batteries that crap out pretty quick. I've went with some new stuff, and it's on the way, but I want to ask something about voltage.

When I first started with this, I had a problem because the vapor made me cough. I tried switching between various mixes of PG and VG, and eventually just got used to both of them. LOL Now I can do this without any irritation so I'm getting really close to being able to drop the cigarettes altogether. It's still quite different, but I'm getting used to it.

When my battery is at a lower voltage, I get harshness. I guess it might be referred to as 'dry'. Does that make any sense? It seems to be pretty consistent. When I use my passthrough I have NO problems. It's just with these stupid batteries. I can get two or so smokes worth out of them, and then they get too low and start making me cough. Does that make any sense? I bought these originally in 2011. They are 808 batteries that have very little use. (I bought the stuff back in 2011, never followed through with it and kept smoking.)

in something like an 808 when the voltage drops off the nicotine is no longer being fully vaporized, which means a higher concentration of partially vaporized nicotine entering the throat. more of an over-saturation effect then a dry hit. i suspect.

It is well known that nicotine to some extent will control throat hit (feel and harshness of the vapor), and as the vapor stream is hitting the throat with more nicotine from the higher concentration from being partially vaporized it will feel harsher to some degree.

my theory anyways.

These are all good suggestions! Thanks for the info.

I had an individual reply for just about everyone, but my browser decided that the backspace key meant "erase everything I just typed for the last 15 minutes" instead of go back one character.

I don't draw too hard because I'm afraid of getting the juice in my mouth. I use the same slow technique every time. Most of the time I don't have issues, it's just when the batteries are lower. The level of liquid in the cart doesn't seem to make a difference.

I ordered one of the Volt X2's, which should be a significant upgrade from what I'm using now. I'll keep that one at home. I like the 808's for on the go. If I need to vape in public, I'd like to have something that at least resembles a cigarette. I know that most probably don't care, but I do :) If the customer service and quality of the X2 works out, I may opt to grab a couple of their new 808s to take around with me. Has there been any changes since 2011 to the standard 808 batteries?

I also like the theory about the nicotine perhaps not being vaporized all of the way. That's a very good possibility.

I also wanted to add that I've always used a manual battery. I like the control better.

The next time your browser will make such a wrong decision try Ctrl+Z keyboard shortcut.

Sorry. I'm using X, not Windows. :pervy:

There are definitely a lot of variables to consider when troubleshooting flavor or other issues. Everyone is different, along with their equipment, condition, age, etc. We are still dealing with a new product line, being mass marketed in the west only about 8 years or so.

The bad thing about this is that some that try vaping may be turned right back off of it for these same reasons. I'll admit that it is one of the reasons for me last time. (Among other things.) If someone trying to make the switch get's only one of those variables off, they may jump to the conclusion that vaping isn't for them and just keep smoking. Perhaps as the industry regulates and everything being produced gets a little more tweaked it will be less of an issue.

I have been having a problem with a harshness when I first start vaping after letting the e cig sit for a while without using it. This is most noticeable in the morning. I am using an ego c twist battery with a Kanger evod bottom coil. After puffing on it a while, it gets much smoother and then it's fine. Does anyone know why this would happen? I am currently using VG based smoke juice from Johnson Creek. Don't know if that has something to do with it.

I can't do it at all in the morning. I think once I give up smoking altogether, it will get easier. You know that when you smoke, waking up in the morning introduces us to all of this nice mucas and I think our lungs are just in a repair state in the mornings because we haven't smoked in a while. Our lungs actually get the opportunity to begin repair, and they are sensitive to anything. Without the chemicals that are in cigarettes that suppress irritation, you're going to have a reaction to it. I think that's why I've seen a lot of threads where people have difficulty in the mornings with vaping. I know for me it's going to be one of the toughest parts of quitting smoking.

If you are a smoker, then I can tell you that it takes some getting used to in general. It's just another foreign substance, even though it is a healthier alternative to smoke, that's not supposed to be breathed. :)
