hey all, just a pondering here. i normally change and charge my batteries at 3.3-3.5 volts. well, i ws playing around with a new toy (kayfun) and didn't notice the drop off and it just stopped producing vapor. i immediatly pulled the battery, checked for shorts, any thing hot....long story short, i discharged a sony vtc4 down to 2.77 volts according to my meter.. it never got hot, etc, it just quit firing..... but i was wondering if i compromised the safety of it. i have no problem tossing if need be. best i could find is they have a 2.5 cut off on them. i have never ran one down that low, i could always tell the drop off at 3.5 and i would change and charge then.

i never go below 3.7 on my mechs. i cant even really get much vapor at anything under it so I am super surprised at even 3.00v you werent already like.......hmm this thing is hella weak.

However, if you put it back on the charger and it charges back up it should be okay in my opinion. Just make sure to check it with a meter. You might have lowered its lifespan and/or made voltage drop much more rapid.

thats the funny thing, i never noticed the drop. with the airflow adjusted like it was, it wasn't blowing any kind of real cloud to start with so nothing real noticable there, the coil is a .7 ohm so it was still a warm vape all the way until the end and just as dense as well.. it wasn't like any of my drippers at all. thats what surprised me so much about it.

but it charged right back up, sitting at 4.22 just like all my other batteries. no excessive heat from charging, nothing. i'm assuming since a vtc4 is rated to run down to 2.5, me catching it at 2.77 it is fine. close to the edge, but fine.

Your fine. I've taken a couple of my MNKE and VTC3's down to around 2.5V a couple of times. Actually it was the same circumstances as your situation, I was using new hardware and not used to it yet. I realized it right away and charged the batteries back up immediately. No problems resulted and all was well. Lesson learned ;)

When that happens you don't want to leave the cells at that low voltage for long. The longer you do that, the more damage happens.

an xtar vp1 or the like will recover overly discharged cells, but id consider 2.77 not overly discharged. close, but still fine imo.
once, due to a faulty locking switch, i accidentally discharged a vtc3 to 1.58v. the vp1 brought it back to health, at a nice n easy snail's pace, i might add.
i charge my cells at around 3.8v. thats typically when i notice the drop off in performance. exception to that rule would be when im using a hybrid atty. due to the lack of voltage loss, i typically dont notice the drop off in performance until around 3.5-3.6v.
as far as the best time to charge, that would be 3.7v and up. li-ion cells prefer a shallow charge to a deep charge (which is a good tip for your phone and tablet/laptop as well).

All turned out well. I use a nitecore i4, it charged up fine. Just wasnt used to the kayfun not having a noticable drop off like a dripper. But thanks for all the replies. Just have to keep an eye on the battery closer with the kayfun. Im normally pretty strict about changing the battery around 3.4 at the lowest, just had a brain fart thinking I would notice the drop off. Oh well, lesson learned..

Chipotle.
I've run one of my VTC4's until it wouldn't fire more than once, so probably around 2.5-2.6v, my VTC5's haven't seen below 3.3v yet but my LG18650 HE2's I've run down to 2.6v numerous times and they all charge right back up with no issues. I'm mainly using an Xtar charger which does have over-drained battery wake up if needed, hasn't failed me yet.
