Hello all, would like to make my own mod using stabwood and maybe resin as well. Anybody here have any experience either completed or a fail they wish to talk about. Does not matter if it is a mech or variable, just would like some info on maybe purchasing the materials. Have done some research already and decided I like the look of the wood/resin mods. I am a retired machinist with a small shop (also retired with all non CNC machines). Machining any of the hardware needed for assembly I should be able to complete. Purchasing the material (wood, resin, etc) is my first hurdle. I also understand there are some companies online for the electronics as well. If not a mech I would like to go with one of the YiHi Sx chips because of the cost and availability. So this will be a project and would like to make 10 to start out with and see how well I can make them. I know I can buy them but really would like this to be a project because.....well because I can. Thanks in advance.

Purchasing the material (wood, resin, etc) is my first hurdle.
Your biggest hurdle might be affording the cost of a (used) vacuum pump with the right specifications. Rent one and experiment? I doubt you will have any trouble making your own vacuum container (chamber). Something along the lines of the smallest chamber for the largest mod body.
Wood suppliers, Could Google " Exotic Woods & Hardwoods suppliers in your area code XXXXX* ".
I believe there might be a ECF forum for building your own mods.

* On the top right hand corner of this post you will find --"your name" next to "Inbox and Alerts"
Place the mouse pointer on your name. You will get a drop down and on the left hand side of this drop down you will find "Personal Details".
Click Personal Details.
In Personal Details, in middle of screen in gray, you will find "Location" Could fill that box line in.

Thanks BrotherBob, yes could make a vacuum pump set up fairly easily but, could buy one too. Not sure which way I will go there. There are many folks on here and everywhere that are handy in improvising and I am no stranger to that as well. I don't believe I trying to make a mod as cheap as possible but, not looking to spend all kinds of money either. I am hoping I can make one at least as cheap as I can purchase one, except for the purchase of equipment I will need. Would guess I can purchase the materials and put it together for less than lets say $200-$250 (maybe less, not sure) and have a build quality in comparison to one I can purchase from a well known maker for maybe $350. And have a variable wattage device that goes up to maybe 150. Also like to make it a little bit different to fit in the hand. Again not sure of the design. As previously mentioned I intend to make 10 of them. Purchasing some of the inside materials should not be a concern, for instance buying the 510 connector from I believe BigDaddy or something. So although I could make it I believe better not to reinvent and purchasing one that is probably cheaper and better than I could produce. Have researched purchasing some woood pieces already stabilized and maybe that is the better route and just make a form to incorporate those pieces with resin. I am a particular type of person so it will not be a hack when I am done but will be a good and safe build. Thanks for commenting.

Hi and welcome. I've made a few. Exotic woods can be purchased on eBay in small quantities, as well as from national woodworking companies like Rockler and Woodcrafters. YiHi and Evolv regulated mod boards are available online as well, just google for a supplier. I have found Fat Daddy Vapes a handy resource source mod parts as well. Good luck.

Welcome to ECF!

You may have found this already but, if not, here is the Modding Forum link Modding Forum several sub forums there too.

There are several highly skilled modders here. You might be interested in some of the work done by CaptSteve and turbocad6 in this thread BOTTOM FEEDERS= a place for everything modified and/or custom made These are squonk boxes but you may get some ideas there.

Hi suprtrkr, have you made any of the exotics in either stabized or with resin? And yes, have found Fat Daddy's and seems like a place for some of the items and have found the boards like Yihi and Evolve. On ebay some of the blanks are $60+. I believe I can make them cheaper but I may end up just buying for the first one. Thanks for chiming in. I also did not know until someone pointed it out the mod makers that are here as well. Seems like a good resource. Will be starting this next month and I will post a pic now and then as I dive into this project. I just like how the stab/resin mods look and believe I can produce one for less than the $350-600 others are selling them for. Would like to make 10 to start out and see if my friends are interested in helping reduce my costs. It's just a fun project I believe I will enjoy, not for making money.
