In light of some more MCMs arriving soon, I thought I'd pass on my thoughts about MCM #43, an 18350 Mini I received last week. I will try to upload some pictures later in the week when I have a chance.
I've always loved wood; it looks good, it feels good, and it smells nice. Until now, all my vaporizers have been metal or plastic. There's no way I can convey how much better wood is with words. But I'll try.
The Mini fits perfectly in your hand (at least my hand). It's a sensory experience rolling it in your hand while holding it. Rotating a round tube isn't as sensual as rotating a square tube. Make whatever jokes you want, it feels good. Part of this is because it's wood. Metal and plastic simply don't impart the same sensation. It's absolutely solid yet in a subtle way that escapes metal. It's almost as light as plastic, without any of the flex and flimsiness. Its finish catches the light without being shiny, is smooth without being slippery. It just feels right. Those of you who already have wood pieces you cherish will understand what I'm not expressing very well. Wood is where it's at.
It's not enough to just be made from wood. As gushed about above, it must have an appropriate shape, and it also must be skillfully made and finished. The Mini is very well made. The fit and finish are spectacular. Rolling it in your hand reveals subtle textures in the wood you can feel, even through the lacquer. The magnetically attached battery cover fits without any play whatsoever. Once in place, there's no sensation it's a removable piece, and there's even a tiny bevel cut into the main body at the bottom that makes removing the cover trivial.
Not much to say about the connector; it's a 510 thread, is mounted a miniscule amount above the top piece of wood, has four air channels cut in it, and everything I have fits and works well. There is zero wobble, and it's mounted at the correct angle. My atty and drip tip stick straight up, not at an angle. No well to catch overflow, no external threads. For me, this is a plus; for you it might not be.
The button is interesting, and I have mixed feelings. It takes a very light touch (in fact, a really heavy touch is uncomfortable), and it seems to work just as well by pushing it up or down or right or left as it does pushing it in. Sort of like a momentary rocker switch that works in any direction. It's a pleasure to use and there's a positive click in whatever direction you push, so you know when it's on or off. On the down side, the switch is tiny, cut like the end of tootsie roll stick, and if you have sensitive fingers or thin skin, its edges may annoy you. More importantly, it's not recessed (which is why it's so easy to use), and there is no secondary safety switch. The evolv DNA12 that regulates the Mini times out in about 20 seconds, and also has a thermal cutoff, but still, removing the battery is probably a good idea if you're going to pack it for travel. Or just unscrew the atty you're using.
The DNA12 VW regulator has been well discussed in other places, so I won't go into it much here, except to note that it works as advertised. Something I forgot is that it requires a load before it will put out any voltage. I screwed my voltmeter in, but didn't bother to put an atty into the voltmeter and thought the Mini was dead. This really bummed me out until I remembered and screwed the atty into the voltmeter, at which point it lit up and everything worked great (currently running ~4V into a 1.5Ω load). That's 10.66 Watts, which is where I like to vape, and since the DNA12 is a variable wattage device, if I put a 2.5Ω atty into the Mini, it will still deliver 10.66 Watts (by suppying 5.16V). Nice. Note that if you are used to a variable voltage device, you may wonder why your voltmeter reading is fluctuating slightly from when you first fire your atty and over the next ten seconds or so. That's because the resistance of your atty is changing slightly as it heats up, and the DNA12 is obligingly varying the voltage to maintain whatever power (wattage) you have set. Also nice. The control to vary the power is inside the battery compartment, and needs a mini slotted screwdriver to adjust. It's a sealed quality potentiometer (variable resistor), not one of the open wiper versions that becomes more and more unreliable with age, due to contamination on its wiper and resistive surface. The need for a mini screwdriver to adjust the pot may or may not be a down side for you. I don't adjust the Mini's power much, and I always have a mini screwdriver with me (on my keychain), so I'm happy.
Finally, when I first received my Mini, it really really really reeked of lacquer. Gives-you-a-headache strong. Long story short, three days later and it doesn't smell at all. Zero. The problem is that we all want our MCMs right NOW, and Matador obliges by sending them out after the lacquer has dried, but not after its odor is completely gone. I'm sure he will be happy to hold it for an additional few days if you prefer. If not, let me assure you that whatever smell it has when you get it will be gone shortly thereafter.
