I never get to do jury duty.
My first round of college was Law Enforcement - they don't like me :(
They don't like accountants either. I know that whenever I get selected for jury duty, I just need to get picked to sit on the jury and one of the attorneys will remove me using a jury challenge. I've been called for jury duty for municipal court, county court, state court, and even federal court. I have always been kicked off the jury every single time.

What was incredible was one time I was selected to sit on a jury for a criminal case. The defendant raped his stepdaughter and when the mom confronted him, he tied both of them up and beat them with a guitar. So in addition to rape and assault charges, he was also charged with kidnapping. One of the jury questions was whether we were, or knew someone, who had been sexually assaulted. A guy who had been selected to be in the jury said that he had a girlfriend who had been. I said no. The defense attorney used his first jury challenge on me and opted to leave the other guy on the jury.

Because accountants are generally logical and analytical. Again, too educated for them!

I've been summoned twice...got excused the 1st time here in Texas 100 years ago. I was already scheduled to testify in an ongoing case. 2nd time was from Kansas after I had moved to Texas.
This was the second time I served on a jury. I've gotten notices that I never responded to because I knew I wouldn't be able to serve during the month they were for, but once I knew that I wouldn't be working at the hospital until the end of the month I figured I had better send my form in. Got notification not even a week after that, lol. The trial was a rough one. 73 year old man who molested a 6 year old little girl. Unfortunately, there was no forensic evidence that we could use to actually convict him of first degree, so we had to settle for second degree plus communication with a minor for immoral purposes with special circumstances (he was in a position of trust). He's been locked up since October, will be locked up until sentencing on February 17, and then will serve upward of 41-60 months. The special circumstances conviction means the judge can sentence him for up to life. A group of us were standing in the parking lot talking afterward and the defense attorney came up to us to ask us if we had any questions or anything. One of the guys asked him if he thought the guy was guilty and he said he thinks he probably did it but doesn't remember because he has a drinking problem. I was kinda shocked! Wasn't expecting the guy's attorney to not believe him, lol! I'm glad it's over just because of the nature of the case but I do feel pretty good about our verdict. All of us would have loved to have had just a single shred of evidence to convict him of first degree molestation (a felony) but there just wasn't any. They didn't record the confession and dude said he never confessed and he didn't write the written statement (which is pretty normal) and he just signed it without reading it. Yeah right. I just hope the little girl gets some help. Her whole situation is just crap. :(

They weren't letting people off for anything this time! People who work in LE, people whose family members work at the prison or in the courts, nada. Out of 53 people they only excused 4 or 5 and they were people who had been severely traumatized by molestation and were visibly shaken. One of the gals who actually served with us admitted to past abuse and it was the first time she had ever said anything to anyone! I was shocked! She did really well and I am hoping that the experience was helpful for her. She saw just how many other folks had been abused in the past and the number was staggering. There were even people who said that they were so shocked by how many people there were that THEY didn't feel they could be fair but they weren't excused. I think one of them actually ended up on the panel, too.

I was really surprised at the number of people who were not challenged and served on my panel who had a past like that. I would have thought that the defense would have excluded them first! I told them that I had been a victim of date rape and I wasn't too surprised when they kept me, but some of the people had had very similar experiences to the victim in this case.

WOW! I am surprised that the attorney could say such a thing.

What a horrible case to have to be on jury duty for!

I don't understand why it requires forensics for it to be first degree?
Or why him claiming he does not remember the confession means anythiing. I would believe the officer who witnessed the statement. They jury was directed not to?
I hope the judge gives him life! Please let us know if you find out.

I have never had to do jury duty. The times I had been called I had a young disabled child so I did not have to go.

Red I hope that you locate your package!!
It got into the 70's today!! I was thrilled to not have to wear layers while on the porch!

Just poking my head in. Had lots of crap happening at work and home. Dumb 20s employees giving me headaches, bloody dog decided she was gonna get into the trash, etc.

Got some sunshine headed my way though. Had a good paycheck, so I ordered some new batteries and cases to replace my old busted ones and did a FastTech order for two new mechs and sundries. Got a Frankenskull BF clone with RDA and a Geekvape Karma mod kit, some art coils, a new sleeve for my Pico and a nice resin drip tip for my friend's SuperTank as a belated birthday gift. (Got her some batteries too. She's out of work, so I know she'll be ecstatic! )

I'm sorry you had to sit through all of that. You'd be surprised how many attorneys know/think their clients are guilty, but they fight for a fair trial. I couldn't do that!
I know it! I really disliked that attorney during the trial. His job is to protect his client and I know that, but some of the lengths those defense attorneys go to is shocking! I could never do that. It was cool talking with him afterward, though, and it really did make me go !!! when he said he thought his client was guilty! What if we hadn't found him guilty of anything? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if someone I defended, that I was positive was guilty, got off for something horrible like what this defendant did.

The little girl never actually said that he touched her. She said he tried to touch her and how all that went but when she was asked if he touched her she said he tried to. It was just not possible to say beyond a reasonable doubt that he actually made contact with her. It was frustrating, to say the least.
