I almost (well, I did, but I deleted it) posted that near-light-speed travel wouldn't put the galaxy at our fingertips. It would barely put the solar system at our fingertips. But I decided I'd just visualize an alternate, much more compact and conveniently located galaxy.

I tried to do something like this in the zombie group. We got about half way and it died. Good luck. Such a neat idea. I can't participate because it's a contest and I'm a supplier but I'll be following along.

This is awesome I've always loved these types of threads. I've read the 1st page and I have to say, most of the posts have been very detailed and writerly. Good stuff so far. Some of it is a little dry but I'm not really usually the guy to hit up Sci-Fi books.
