A friend once told me that once your income goes up, your standard of living does as well, so you never really get ahead.

I believe that. We never had a huge jump in our standard of living because we were so busy trying to play catch-up with our finances, but we were thisclose when he got laid off. We were almost to the point where we could have started spending money on remodeling, completing the siding job, just enjoy the new income level. sigh. Someday.
