So a buddy of mine went to a local b & m and they sold him a mech mod with a kick and a nimbus. The thing is he doesn't know how to rebuild coils or even know how to use a multi meter. The guy at the store is rebuilding the coils for him... The thing that scares me is my buddy doesn't know much about the mech mod or rebuildables. Is this smart?

I told him to get on here and sent him the url. Hopefully he gets on here but he's using the mech as his main mod Bc it's the only one he has...
Assuming he's using the Kick he's protected, so there shouldn't be any serious danger here.
As for being "smart", well, not really. He should either move over to a retail tank unit if he isn't going to build his own coils, or learn about building his own coils so he isn't paying some guy at the store to do it for him. It's not the ideal setup for a newbie, but with the Kick in place there's nothing particularly dangerous about it.
In a way he's way ahead of the curve here. He's basically all setup to do RBAs, RDAs, pretty much anything he wants. He just needs to learn how to do it all himself safely. Most of us don't reach this point until we've been vaping for months.

Really should learn a bit about batteries, how to build the atty, how to use a multimeter, basically how to do everything. Luckily you know a place where he can get all that info. He may get away with it, for now, if they are building him proper setups, but they won't do that forever. What's he gonna do whenever he has a problem, run to the shop?
This is the kink of crap that bothers me. Even if it "safe" right now, there is room for it to be dangerous... i just gave my ego vv to a buddy to get him started, id never just start someone off with a mech, ever... gah... if i ever open my own shop there are going to be questions to verify you can buy a mechanical mod from my store... i do not support people making risky decisions that may turn out negatively for the community. If you want to be dumb... good for you but don't make the rest of us look bad.. this is not aimed at you or your friend, more at the employees doing this...
There are a ton of videos on this but nothing beats practical experience. Being an engineer, I have seen the craziest stuff with folks experimenting with stuff they didn't check out first. Your friend should get all the info they can and definitely try to pump the coil building dude in the b&m for info. It seems starting slowly is usually the best bet in any field.
Yea when he told me the guy at the store sold it to him it kinda made me wanna go to the shop and ask the guy if he is trying to set someone up for failure. Obviously the guy made my friend feel like it was the best thing out... but I'm sure the guy was just trying to sell something that was probably expensive and my buddy was gullible enough to fall for it without doing any practical research. I have a vamo v5 with a pt3 and everyone else is buying rebuild able and having to take it to the shop to rebuild it and I'm just like I rebuild my own and get more vapor and flavor than both of yall.. that's what happens when you do research.
with the kick its a regulated device with protection. building coils its stupid easy and he could learn it quick. I wouldnt say its dangerous, I jumped into mechs after using egos for a month or two. Just dont be dumb, stay with in your batteries limits and make sure your build isnt going to short (again with the kick I believe it wont even fire it the build is to low or if you have a short)
tell him to get a multimeter and learn how to use it to check his battery life and to check the resistance of his builds. if he plans to stay with the kick have him grab 30ga kanthal and start watching youtube vids on how to build coils. IMO micro coils with cotton are the way to go, so easy to build, hit great and last a long time before he will have to build another one.

if you know how to rebuild then teach him, his device is a VV mod with the kick , just more work to adjust it. if you can build a protank then the nimbus will be a piece of cake.
Just make sure you tell him not to carry around extra batteries in his pocket with loose change, keys, etc. They need to be in a battery case.
Yea I plan on teaching him I just hope he doesn't end up taking the kick out and something happening. He only had the one battery with him the other day so Idk if he is carrying around extras or not.
I never carry extra batteries. I know that my 2100+ mAh batteries will last more than the 9-10 hours I'm out of the house, so I don't bother bringing spares. If the batteries ever wear down to the point where a charge doesn't last at least 12 hours I'll replace them.
My wife, who uses a 69 mod with Kick and an iClear 30s tank with Panasonic NCR18650PF 2900 mAh batteries can go almost 3 full days on a single charge. Not much point in carrying a spare battery when the one you've got will last multiple days.
I am very glad I read this. I had thought about a mech but I know I am not ready to build coils and things. I like simple so I will stick with my Vamo.
I love my vamo and have learned how to rebuild my protank coils. If you don't wanna rebuild tho the coils are still pretty cheap..

Note for the coils, I don't know how much do they charge but let's say 5 bucks... Once you have the coil and learn to change cotton that one could last you a month (that was cheaper than when I was changing the heads on clearos)
So it's all good in my book

Im sure he'll be fine after researching a bit about coils building and safety usage of mech mod in ecf. Plus, he has a kick there, so it's safe enough for now!
