You know, my first though was "well the mechanical, obviously" and then when I tried to figure out why it got me thinking quite a bit. I am a little embarrassed to admit that I just don't like the new mods because I think they're all ugly. I've seen lots of beautiful mechs, I think the provari looks very nice, but none of the new 20+ watt devices do a thing for me aesthetically. Maybe somebody will put one together that doesn't look like a cheap flashlight or a micro cassette recorder, but until then I'm just not interested no matter how well they perform.

Thats how I feel. I can see the benefit of a 30 watt mod, but the tube mods are too big to stick in my pocket, and the box mods are awkward to keep in my pocket while I'm at work, and moving about. And I simply refuse to but a mod that feels unnatural in my pocket. I'm hoping for a 20-30 watt kick.

I own 8 mech mods and I built 2 box mods. The box mods are a DNA 30 and a SX 350. I love the versatility of my box mods. They are my go to mods at home. However, I agree when I'm out and about its one of my mech mods in my pocket. I would go for a DYI SX 350 box mod as the chip is reported to be getting an upgrade to 80 watts by the end of the month. Check out the Varitube SX 350 thread in the vendors section of the forum.

I use mech's and regulated mod's. Mech's for work and a vtr+134mini for at home. A mech with a kaifun lite+ with a 1.3 ohm build is heaven for me. On the regulated i also use around the same resistance and i never exceed the 10 watts. More then that and i feel like i destroy my liquids. Unpleasant flavour. So i'm very confused/sceptical about sub-ohm(ing) and such high wattage. Is that any good/safe?

Basically, better wicking and airflow allow RDAs to be run at higher power than tanks. If you put a pot of flavored water on the stove, using just enough heat to simmer, the water will be 212°. However, if you turn the heat up to high the water will still only be 212° but will produce much more steam. If you allow the pot to boil dry (what happens with insufficient wicking) the flavor will burn.

A VW device is an excellent tool to learn the how the relationship between power, wicking, airflow and chamber size affects the type of vape produced. The built-in electronic battery safety features makes a VW device a generally safer playground than a mech.

Vapor Shark makes a couple of very small VW box mods.

Nothing is wrong with my mech, I am just trying to get a feel for what the SX chips are like. I have a limited budget for mods so I am trying to decide if I should pull the trigger now on the IPV 50w, wait a month to see if something better comes out, or build my own SX350 mod.

If you are capable of building electronics I would very much encourage you to research building your own SX350 mod versus purchasing manufactured mod with the SX330 V2 50W or SX330 V3 100W chip.

There are a few SX350 threads in the Modding forum but the thread with the most discussion is the The YiHi SX350 35W Chip at Varitube thread.

As others have mentioned, I'd like to see the aesthetics and form factor improve but I'd also like to see the prices drop and what people are experiencing in terms of durability. In six months I think the picture will be clearer. As the technological progression changes focus from pushing the envelope to providing features, I think more desirable options will emerge.

That said, I think this is probably a super fun time for the hobbyist, early adapter type.

My mod (sadly a vamo) was a little too big to keep in my pocket without my wife giving me a strange look and thinking I was excited to see her.
I now have the IPV2 50 w. It is lighter than the vamo but obviously it is box. I love it... now i just wish i could still get "that look" from her.
(Perhaps I need to get the clouper t5 dildo mod coming out soon)

The biggest difference is regulated v. unregulated power. If you prefer regulated output then it's worth the extra expense.

I think the biggest difference is the safety factor. The sx chip mods hault when there is a short and when building we all have mode that mistake. I've also had cheap clones short onthemselves on a clearomizer. To me giving up a little on the sub ohm is well worth the safety of burning up a battery.

That said right now is probably a terrible time to buy a tube sx as there are a lot beteer options coming through the pripeline. In other words maybe buy Christmas there will be much better options.
