You might want to get a battery voltage meter. I have one and it's pretty handy to have. What kind of atty are you using on it? You should have the means to check the ohms if you are building your own coils, and you need to be able to check for hard shorts too. These two little gizmos are pretty nice to have, though all you need is the black one. You can check ohms and battery level both with it.

1. Check your resistance of your atty (I don't care if it's pre made like Kanger, Aspire, Innokin, etc) on regulated mod or an ohm reader..there is no safety umbrella unless you're using a "Kick" . I've seen bad coils out of the box from Kanger
2. I would at least wipe down your mech mod outside/inside the tube..unless you can do complete cleaning

"any tips on how to know when it is time to charge? "
You'll know..you'll go from cloud 9 to a fart ...btw..which battery specifically did you get ...

On Stingrays clone..before you even put your topper on..click the firing buttons a few times..make sure it's smooth as possible...if you feel a crunch still..you might need to take it apart and readjusted it, clean it etc...don't force anything...

BTW..my search resulted fine:

So like say i buy an aspire natulis 1.8 ohm coil. if i test it and it isn't at 1.8 ohms should i not use it? i know that voltage isn't regulated in this mech mod so even if the coil isn't exactly on point can't i still use it?

Get a kick.

Authentic Sigelei Variable Wattage Kick Module for Mechanical Mod
Details:

•Matching with atomizer in a resistance of 1.5ohm-3.0ohm
•Variable wattage: 5W-15W in 1W increment or decrement
•POR: After power on reset, the KICK will get into the alert status if no atomizer installed
Low voltage protection (below 3.2V)
Low resistance protection (below 1.0ohm)
Short circuit protection
•Match with any kind of SIGELEI Telescope, and most full mechanical mods
Note: Please take out the kick when charging the battery.

Click on my second sig line hyperlink... read the article, and all linked materials within the article.
Coil resistance and battery amperage outputs are mathematically proportional - understand that, use it to your advantage - and you'll be safe. Simple huh? ;-)

No no ...sorry..let me explain it...let's say you put your atty on ohm reader or regulated, it reads 1.8 or something close..then you're good..but if your regulated mod says Low, non or ohm reader 99 or 1...then's bad..do not put it on mechanical mod and fire...you might cause short and your battery will vent (battery will get extremely hot). I've seen bad coils right out of the package. There is no short protection in mech mods unless it has "Kick"

Always best to study up on how things work before you dive in. People here can help but you are responsible for your own safety. Your questions tell me you arent ready to solo on a mech just yet.

I agree; you really should get a regulated mod.

One of the big things a regulated mod like the mvp2, vamo, zmax etc will give you is the ability to see things like volage and ohms on a screen. With a mech, you're pretty much flying blind which is fine for people with experience.

thanks guys. i understand that mech mods are nothing to play around with. i know that I'm asking a lot of questions but they are more for reassurance. i do plan on getting a kick (mainly because i like the longer look of the mod haha) and i vape with extreme caution. my charger can regulate that the battery is not over charged and i will make sure to stop vaping the second i see a drop off in vapor until i get a voltage/ohm reader. speaking of that does anybody have recommendations for a good voltage/ohm reader that isn't ridiculously expensive? is there any readers that can read both? thanks guys. i assure you i am vaping safely.

The Omnitester

other places range from 19.99 and up....

I can't vouch for it...I use your mini black box flea bay Ohm reader for my builds...and I don't even check voltage on my mech with inline reader..I do once in while..use a hand held digital multimeter to trouble shoot..but haven't for awhile...

thank you so much. ill pick one up as soon as i can. for now the atty I'm using is definitely ok cuz I've been using it for almost a week with no problems. i have another replacement coil that i will probably need to use within the next 2-3 days. if i took it into a vape shop do you think they would test it for me?

You don't have a electronic/regulated mod?...you went straight to mechanical ?.....at least get Innokin vv v3 or MVP 2.0...don't know if you want cough up for Provari....you always need backup...and can act as decent ohm reader

I"m sure the shop will test it for you...but...you don't have to drop mega bucks for decent regulated mod...I still use regulated mod all the time when driving....

To the OP I am an electrical engineer and about a month into vaping and I am not yet comfortable enough with the energy potential in an unregulated mod. Just because of dear old Murphy and his law tending to make me the example. If your wanting to go low ohm look at something like the DNA 20 or 30. That's what I am leaning toward. Even though that copper nemesis is a sexy beast! Maybe I will look into a copper kick.
