I cant speak for everyone but this is what i do:

My mechs are Stainless I just wipe them down with 90% rubbing alcohol and scrub the threads with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. The same for the switch, I take it apart and clean it. I have gold plated contacts so i just wipe them good with soft cloth/Qtip. On my mechs with copper contacts I use Flitz with a Qtip to keep tarnish off them. Once they are dry from alcohol assemble.

My attys and tanks I just rinse with water and scrub with a different toothbrush and then give them a soak in boiling hot water until the water is cooled down. Check orings and let dry and assemble.

I dont use noalox or any of that thread stuff so I cant comment about them. Always best to keep your gear cleaned and maintained. Get spare parts....orings, springs, contacts etc. if you can.

I polish my copper mods by attaching them to a drill so i can spin them quickly while i hold a cape cod cloth on it, then a clean microfiber cloth.

The actual contact pins i usualy just run a file over the surface a few times if there are marks on them.

Stainless mods require less maintenance because they don't patina, but they also don't perform as well. You still need to clean the battery contacts though, especially if they are copper or brass.

A scotch brite will give it a brushed look. If you wanted to do this, I think the best way is to polish it first to a mirror finish, and then very lightly run the scotch brite pad over it almost so lightly that you don't think its doing anything. Repeat numerous times, always moving the pad in the same direction, and you will end with a perfectly brushed look.

Edit: whoops, i was talking about the actual tube, not the contacts. Yeah scotch brite would be perfect for contacts... Or a small file.

It really depends on what you bought! Some mechs like REO you can throw in the sink and wash ... others you may want to just clean the contacts, the threads, naolox the threads, etc.

If you tell us what you bought then it will help.
I really just wanted a thread with these keywords in it; now it exists, with super answers. You guys rock, keep it coming!

You can disassemble and wash the whole thing in soapy water and scrub off any oil.

Then I clean my threads, 510 and contacts with alcohol.

Once I week I do the same using alcohol: threads, contacts, 510.

Once a month I disassemble and polish anything that needs it (brass or copper parts). I clean the contacts and inside the switch. And wipe everything down with alcohol.

You need to keep the connection points clean, for proper function.. That's where the washing, sanding and grease come in. Beyond that it's all about asthetics. I like a natural patina on metals, don't really want shinny metals. So cleaning is about function and keeping "grossness" at bay. My mod is Spotless inside, not so much on the outside.

Kinda like my Motorcycle....... Looks like it should be in the junkyard... But runs, BETTER then when new. does the 1/4 mile in about 10 seconds, did it in 14 plus from the factory.

You want to keep the battery cap threads clean and shiney. The mod body is part of the electrical circuit, and dirty threads can cause voltage drop. Use an anti-oxidant/lubricant like Noalox.
