I'm new to mechanical mods, as this question will show. Received a KTS Telescoping Storm. It has a button on the side that can be locked. The thing is, I don't trust myself to remember to lock the button 100% of the time if I stick it in my pocket. If I remove the atty from the device before sticking it in my pocket, does that totally prevent the battery from discharging? As long as nothing is connected to the mod and I have no metal in my pocket, would it be safe even if the button gets depressed for long periods?

you either need to lock it down properly or just not put it in your pocket, yes it is dangerous and you can burn yourself

also if you are going to take the time to disconnect the atty, it would be just as easy to lock it

Soooo, yes it will still fire without an atty?

I'd plan on always locking it, but if I can't double up on the safety I don't want it in my pocket. I can see forgetting to lock it even if I make it a habit from the start, but I wouldn't forget both if I always lock it and remove the topper. If it can fire in the pocket without being connected to a topper, I better leave it at home.

^ I don't disagree (with vape_nerd) but to answer your question: The mod is incapable of firing if there is no atty on top and there is no other metal object grounding the positive post.

So what would be the reason not to put a disconnected mod in my pocket if it can't fire, could something else go wrong?

Actually, either removing the battery or the atty attachment would break the battery's electrical circuit. It would then be safe to carry in a pocket or purse without worrying about accidentally pressing the fire button.

I should know, this type of accident happened to me early in my vaping career. After receiving one of my first mechanical mods, I got into the habit of storing my Altsmoke BB and Silver Bullet in a pants pocket in my locker at work. I change into a uniform for work. I frequently go to the locker room during work breaks for a few quick vapes.

As you can see from the below pic, the BB has a protruding horn fire button which can easily allow accidental firing of the power switch when compressed in a tight space, ie. pants pocket. Well, I go to my locker for a vape break and reach for the BB. It is too hot to touch! ...!! The power switch had been activated continuously until the battery hard-shorted and went into thermal runaway, blowing out both ends of the battery, melting the plastic covering, and venting extremely hot gasses.

The battery was a "protected" Trustfire 14500. It didn't offer enough protection to prevent my battery from venting and melting.

I stopped using Trustfire brand and protected batteries altogether. I now use only AW IMR (safer chemistry) batteries. I no longer put the BB into a pocket, but use a Serenity Gear leather lanyard to hang from the locker's coat hanger.

I recommend using extra protection in a mechanical mod such as a Vape Safe Fuse. Batteries : Vape Safe Mod Fuse 2 Even if you still use protected batteries, this allows another layer of safety. Make sure your mechanical mod has drilled vent holes to allow hot gasses to escape in case of battery runaway and has a clean "hot spring" which will collapse in the event of a over-heating battery to break the electrical circuit. If you are going to pocket or carry your device in a purse, either remove the battery, remove the atty attachment, or if disabling the fire switch is an option, use it.

Also, do not carry spare batteries in a pocket or purse which may have metal to cause an electrical circuit. Plastic battery cases are cheap and can prevent destroying a battery, a burn on your leg, or a burnt purse. Battery Cases

Thanks for the detailed answer Bad. The reason I ask is that I "always" lock my eGos before putting them in my pocket. Sometimes, though rarely, when I take it out it's unlocked. Either it magically turned on, or more likely, I can occasionally forget to do something that's a habit. I couldn't see why a disconnected mod would fire but wanted to make sure, in case for whatever reason I remove the atty but forget to lock it.

I am confused of why some others said not to do it though. Is there something I'm missing?

Because human error is always going to be a factor. The one time you forget to practice safe battery techniques could be the one time you have an unfortunate incident.

Even after having the aforementioned battery incident, I recently put a freshly charged IMR battery into a pocket as my hands were full, not realizing that there was some loose change in the pocket (it was a left pocket where I never routinely put change). I soon began to feel the heat and managed to remove the battery as it vented. I don't know if the battery was still functional or not, but I chose to dispose of it regardless.

If you just take off the Atty or Clearto or Whatever and your Car Key is inside the Connector, it's going to Fire.

All be it, maybe rare. But stranger things have Happened. I'd Lock the Button whenever you are not using it.

Yeah I don't put anything in my front pockets except for the left goes my to-go device (usually Twists) the the right goes my phone. Key's, change, etc I put in my back pocket since I don't want to scratch my pv or phone.

I still plan to always lock it, the same as I do with eGos, but going to remove the topper too. With an unprotected device I'd rather have 2 safety precautions. If removing the topper could still make it dangerous, plan B would have been to remove the battery and put into a batt case.

When I first started Vaping I almost Wrecked my Car because of the Short Lived eGo Cartomizer.

I put my eGo in my pocket when I jumped in the car thinking I had Unscrewed the eGo Cartomizer a 1/4 Turn so it wouldn't Fire.

I was about 3 Blocks down the Road approaching an Intersection when there was a Burning Pain in My Leg/Hip. I couldn't pull over so I Screamed thru the Intersection ( Literally ) until I got to the Other Side.

I jumped out of the Car and pulled my eGo out of my Pocket. The eGo Cartomizer was a Gooey Melted Mess of Semi-Molten Plastic.

Back then, PV's didn't have 5 Click On/Off.

Now that they Do, I use that Feature whenever I Pocket Carry a PV.

Before the fat batts had the 5 click off I'd always disconnect the carto. When the off function became available I got used to turning it off. There was a couple times over the last couple years I'd hear it sizzle, but luckily all I own have a 7 second or so cut off, so never enough to get hot. The first time that happened I blamed the eGo, I could have sworn I shut it off. The second time it happened I could have sworn that too, but accepted that just maybe human error could come into play lol. If the eGo batts didn't have the auto cut off, I'd disconnect them along with locking them.
